Project – Influence of social media on communication and collaboration skills among secondary school students in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
In recent years, social media has become one of the most influential forces shaping the way people communicate, learn, and interact globally. The emergence of social networking platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter (now X), TikTok, and Telegram has revolutionized how individuals, particularly young people, exchange information and maintain relationships (Boyd & Ellison, 2007). These platforms have created new spaces for social interaction, allowing for instant sharing of messages, videos, and opinions that transcend geographical boundaries. The digital environment created by social media has, therefore, become an indispensable component of modern communication, influencing not only social behaviors but also educational and professional practices (Kaplan & Haenlein, 2010).
Social media platforms have particularly transformed communication among adolescents and young adults. For many secondary school students, these digital tools serve as the primary means of maintaining friendships, sharing experiences, and expressing opinions. Beyond social engagement, these platforms are also being utilized for academic purposes such as forming study groups, exchanging class notes, and collaborating on school projects. This trend highlights the dual function of social media — as a medium for entertainment and as an educational resource that supports learning (Lenhart et al., 2015). The ease of access to mobile devices and internet connectivity has made it possible for students to remain connected with peers and teachers at all times, fostering an environment of continuous interaction and collaboration.
In Nigeria, the use of social media among young people has increased dramatically over the last decade due to improved internet access, affordable smartphones, and increased digital literacy (Okon & Eyo, 2020). Secondary school students, especially in urban and semi-urban areas like Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, are active users of platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook for both personal and academic purposes. Many students use class group chats to discuss assignments, share educational resources, and seek clarifications from teachers or peers. These activities promote collaborative learning, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills when properly guided. Hence, social media has the potential to enhance communication and collaboration — two essential competencies required for success in the 21st-century learning environment.
However, the use of social media among secondary school students also raises concerns about its potential negative consequences. While these platforms promote connectivity, they can simultaneously diminish the quality of real-life interpersonal communication. Over-reliance on digital communication can lead to superficial interactions, misinterpretations, and reduced empathy (Subrahmanyam & Šmahel, 2011). Many students now prefer typing short messages or using emojis to express feelings rather than engaging in meaningful face-to-face conversations. Such trends may erode students’ ability to develop effective communication skills, including public speaking, active listening, and emotional intelligence, which are vital for both academic and professional success.
Communication and collaboration skills are widely recognized as fundamental 21st-century skills necessary for learning and social development. According to Trilling and Fadel (2009), these skills involve expressing ideas clearly, actively engaging in discussions, resolving conflicts constructively, and working effectively in teams to achieve common goals. In a school context, collaboration enhances group learning, peer support, and knowledge sharing, while strong communication fosters understanding and clarity in both verbal and written exchanges. The way students use social media may either strengthen or weaken these abilities depending on their patterns of engagement. Constructive use — such as participating in academic forums or group discussions — can enhance communication competence, while unregulated or excessive use for entertainment may result in distraction and poor social interaction.
The educational landscape in Nigeria is gradually embracing digital transformation. Many schools are beginning to integrate technology into teaching and learning, recognizing that digital literacy is essential for students’ overall development. Teachers are exploring innovative methods to incorporate social media tools into classroom activities to promote interactive learning and teamwork (Eze & Nwankwo, 2021). Nevertheless, the use of social media among students remains largely unmonitored, with many using it for non-academic purposes. This raises questions about how such usage influences the quality of their communication and collaboration skills, especially within the secondary school context where character formation and social development are crucial.
Moreover, while previous studies have explored the academic impact of social media, fewer have examined its specific influence on students’ interpersonal skills, particularly communication and collaboration. The local context of Ikot Ekpene presents a unique environment where students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds interact within a semi-urban digital landscape. The blend of traditional classroom instruction and modern digital exposure makes it important to assess how social media shapes students’ behavior and learning attitudes. Understanding this relationship can help educators, parents, and policymakers develop appropriate strategies for integrating social media in education while minimizing its potential drawbacks.
Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the influence of social media usage on the communication and collaboration skills of secondary school students in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area. By examining students’ engagement patterns, communication styles, and collaborative learning behaviors, the study aims to determine whether social media enhances or hinders their interpersonal development. The findings will contribute to the ongoing discourse on digital learning and provide practical recommendations for using social media as a tool for improving educational outcomes and 21st-century skill acquisition among Nigerian secondary school students.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Social media platforms were originally developed to promote interpersonal communication, information exchange, and the creation of virtual communities. Their primary purpose was to bring people closer together by enabling instant and convenient interaction across geographical boundaries. Over time, these platforms have evolved into multifaceted tools that now serve educational, business, and entertainment purposes. However, despite their benefits, there is increasing concern about the extent to which social media contributes positively or negatively to the communication and collaboration skills of secondary school students. The question remains whether these digital tools are enhancing students’ interpersonal competence or replacing meaningful human interaction with superficial digital exchanges (Akanbi, 2020).
In many secondary schools today, students are highly active users of social media applications such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. These platforms dominate their social lives and have become the primary channels for interaction and self-expression. Yet, observations by teachers and school administrators suggest that this increased online activity is often accompanied by a decline in students’ ability to communicate effectively in real-life situations. Many students struggle to express their ideas coherently during classroom discussions, participate meaningfully in group projects, or engage in critical conversations that demand verbal reasoning and attentiveness. This raises serious questions about the overall impact of digital communication on the development of essential soft skills among adolescents.
Teachers have further expressed concerns that social media communication patterns, which often rely on abbreviations, slang, and emojis, are eroding students’ language proficiency and grammatical accuracy. Students who spend excessive time chatting online may unconsciously transfer informal language styles into academic writing and speech. Furthermore, the culture of brief and fragmented online conversations may be contributing to shorter attention spans and reduced cognitive engagement during academic activities. While social media platforms have the potential to facilitate collaborative learning through group chats, virtual discussions, and shared educational resources, their misuse often leads to distractions, procrastination, and superficial collaboration (Uche & Obot, 2022).
Another growing issue associated with social media use among students is the rise of cyberbullying, online harassment, and exposure to inappropriate content. Such negative experiences not only affect students’ psychological well-being but can also undermine their confidence in communication and teamwork. Students who become victims of online abuse may withdraw from both digital and physical social spaces, leading to decreased participation in collaborative academic tasks. This phenomenon highlights the need for a balanced and guided approach to social media use in educational contexts to ensure that its benefits are maximized while minimizing potential risks.
In Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, access to digital devices and internet connectivity has expanded significantly over the years, making social media an integral part of students’ daily routines. While this digital exposure presents opportunities for learning and connectivity, it also poses challenges regarding responsible usage. Teachers and parents have observed that some students spend more time engaging with online entertainment content than using social media for academic collaboration or knowledge sharing. The extent to which such behaviors affect their communication competence and ability to work effectively in teams is still unclear. Hence, there is a growing concern about whether social media is a tool for educational empowerment or a distraction that hinders students’ interpersonal and academic development.
It is against this background that this study seeks to investigate the influence of social media on the communication and collaboration skills of secondary school students in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area. The research aims to determine whether students’ engagement with social media platforms enhances their ability to communicate effectively and collaborate productively with others. By filling this gap in existing literature, the study will provide insights that can guide educators, parents, and policymakers in designing interventions that promote positive and purposeful social media use among secondary school students in Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study
The study is significant because it explores a contemporary issue that directly affects teaching and learning in the 21st century — the influence of social media on students’ communication and collaboration skills. Social media has become deeply integrated into the daily lives of young people, making it impossible to separate its effects from educational outcomes. By investigating this relationship, the study will help uncover both the positive and negative dimensions of social media use among secondary school students. The findings will provide a better understanding of how digital tools can be used to enhance essential soft skills, which are crucial for personal, academic, and professional success.
For students, this study holds particular importance as it will create awareness about the impact of their social media habits on their interpersonal relationships and teamwork abilities. Many students use social media without reflecting on how it shapes their attitudes, communication styles, and learning behaviors. The study will help them recognize that responsible and purposeful use of social media can improve their communication proficiency, encourage peer collaboration, and enhance academic performance. Conversely, it will make them aware of the dangers of misuse, such as distractions, reduced attention span, and poor interpersonal interactions. This awareness is expected to encourage students to adopt more disciplined and educationally oriented social media practices.
For teachers, the study will provide valuable insights into how social media can be effectively incorporated into instructional practices to promote active learning and collaboration. Teachers can use findings from this research to design interactive teaching strategies, such as online discussion groups, collaborative assignments, and peer-to-peer mentoring, using social media tools that students are already familiar with. Understanding students’ patterns of social media use will also help teachers identify potential barriers to effective communication and teamwork, thereby allowing them to provide better guidance in both digital and face-to-face learning environments.
The study is also significant to school administrators and curriculum planners who are responsible for shaping educational policies and programs. The findings can serve as a framework for developing school-based digital literacy programs and social media guidelines that encourage constructive engagement rather than misuse. Administrators may use the results to implement policies that balance academic use of technology with ethical standards and digital responsibility. Curriculum planners, on the other hand, can draw from this study to design educational content that integrates communication and collaboration skills through social media-based learning activities, ensuring that students are prepared for the demands of a technology-driven world.
For researchers and policymakers, this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on social media and education, particularly in the Nigerian context where empirical data on this topic remain limited. It will serve as a useful reference for future research exploring the broader implications of digital technology on students’ social, cognitive, and academic development. Policymakers can also use the study’s findings to inform national and state-level education policies that promote responsible digital engagement among young people. This can include initiatives aimed at integrating social media literacy into the secondary school curriculum to enhance students’ communication and collaboration competencies.
Finally, this study is significant to the society at large, as it highlights the role of social media in shaping future citizens who are effective communicators, team players, and responsible digital users. In a world increasingly dependent on technology, the ability to communicate clearly and collaborate effectively are vital for social harmony and economic progress. By examining how social media influences these attributes among secondary school students, the study contributes to national efforts toward developing a digitally competent and socially responsible generation. The outcomes of this research will therefore have far-reaching implications for education, policy, and societal development in Nigeria.
