Project – Impact of WhatsApp Group Study on Students Academic Performance in Ikorodu, Lagos
CHAPTER ONE:
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The advent of digital communication technologies has significantly transformed the landscape of education. Among these technologies, mobile instant messaging platforms, particularly WhatsApp, have emerged as powerful tools for academic collaboration and peer-to-peer learning. WhatsApp allows users to share texts, images, videos, audio messages, and documents in real time, making it a convenient platform for students to communicate and collaborate outside the traditional classroom setting (Church & de Oliveira, 2013).
In Nigeria, the use of mobile phones for educational purposes has gained considerable attention in recent years. Studies have shown that students often form WhatsApp groups for the purpose of discussing academic topics, sharing lecture notes, asking questions, and collaborating on assignments (Abdullahi & Abubakar, 2017; Oyedokun & Adeyemo, 2018). These groups provide students with a virtual space to support one another, clarify doubts, and engage in interactive learning, which may enhance their overall academic performance.
Despite its potential, the impact of WhatsApp group study on students’ academic outcomes remains underexplored in many Nigerian contexts, particularly in suburban areas such as Ikorodu in Lagos State. While some studies suggest that WhatsApp can facilitate learning and improve engagement, others argue that it may encourage off-task behavior, distractions, and academic dishonesty if not properly managed (Moqbel et al., 2013). Thus, it becomes imperative to empirically examine whether active participation in WhatsApp study groups has a significant effect on students’ academic performance.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Academic performance remains a major concern for secondary and tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Despite increased access to learning resources, many students continue to perform below expectations in examinations, leading to poor educational outcomes. Traditional classroom interactions and teacher-centered approaches are sometimes insufficient to address the diverse learning needs of students.
With the widespread adoption of mobile technology, students are increasingly turning to WhatsApp as a medium for collaborative learning. While some educators view WhatsApp group study as a means of enhancing peer-to-peer support and reinforcing classroom learning, others question its effectiveness in improving measurable academic outcomes. There is limited empirical evidence on the actual impact of WhatsApp group study on students’ academic performance in suburban Nigerian contexts, such as Ikorodu, Lagos.
This study seeks to bridge this gap by investigating whether active participation in WhatsApp study groups contributes positively to students’ academic achievement. Understanding this relationship will provide insights for educators, students, and policymakers on how digital learning tools can be integrated effectively into students’ learning processes.
