INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Education is widely recognized as a critical tool for national development, and mathematics is a core subject that equips students with logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and analytical thinking necessary for life and academic progression (National Mathematics Advisory Panel, 2008). Algebra, as a branch of mathematics, plays a central role in developing abstract thinking and forms the foundation for advanced mathematical concepts (Aina & Ogunsanya, 2018). Despite its importance, students in junior secondary schools often struggle with algebraic concepts due to abstractness and inadequate understanding of the subject matter (Owolabi, 2019).
Instructional materials, which include textbooks, charts, models, diagrams, and interactive digital resources, serve as essential tools in teaching and learning mathematics (Nworgu, 2015). They provide concrete representations of abstract mathematical concepts, facilitate visualization, and engage students actively in the learning process (Onwu & Agu, 2019). Studies have shown that the use of instructional materials can enhance comprehension, retention, and performance in mathematics (Ajayi & Adeyemi, 2020).

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Algebra is a critical component of the junior secondary school mathematics curriculum, but many students experience difficulty in understanding and applying algebraic concepts. One of the major challenges identified is the inadequate use of instructional materials in the teaching of algebra (Owolabi, 2019). 1.3 Objectives of the Study
The general objective of this study is to examine the effect of using instructional materials on students’ achievement in algebra in junior secondary schools. The specific objectives are to:

H₁: The use of instructional materials has a significant effect on students’ achievement in algebra in junior secondary schools.
1.6 Significance of the Study

The research is limited to junior secondary school students in the first and second years due to their foundational learning stage in algebra.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
