CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Climate change has emerged as one of the most pressing global challenges of the 21st century, posing significant threats to food security, livelihoods, and sustainable development, especially in sub-Saharan Africa (IPCC, 2022). The phenomenon manifests through rising temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, increased incidence of floods, and extreme weather events. These changes disrupt agricultural production systems, reduce crop yields, and exacerbate rural poverty, particularly among smallholder farmers who rely heavily on rain-fed agriculture (FAO, 2019).
In Nigeria, agriculture is a major source of livelihood, employing over 70% of the rural population. Benue State, often referred to as the “Food Basket of the Nation,” is particularly dependent on smallholder farming for the production of crops such as yam, cassava, maize, soybeans, and rice. These farmers typically cultivate less than five hectares, with limited access to modern technologies, irrigation, credit facilities, and extension services. Consequently, their agricultural productivity is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate variability and change (Nwajiuba et al., 2016).
The consequences of climate change for smallholder farmers in Benue State are already evident. Erratic rainfall has led to late planting and crop failures, while rising temperatures have increased evapotranspiration rates, reducing soil moisture availability. Frequent floods along river valleys have caused post-harvest losses and soil degradation, while dry spells have adversely affected crop germination and yield (Adesina & Chukwuma, 2020). These impacts threaten the food security and income stability of rural households and increase their vulnerability to poverty.
In response, smallholder farmers are adopting a variety of climate change adaptation strategies. These include the use of drought-resistant crop varieties, mixed cropping, early planting, soil and water conservation techniques, agroforestry, and diversification of livelihoods through non-farm activities (Olayide et al., 2019). However, the effectiveness of these strategies is often limited by socio-economic factors such as lack of access to credit, limited knowledge of climate-smart practices, poor infrastructural support, and insufficient extension services. Additionally, many adaptation measures are reactive rather than proactive, leaving farmers inadequately prepared for extreme climate events.
While various studies have examined the impacts of climate change on agriculture in Nigeria, there is limited empirical research that systematically assesses the range and effectiveness of adaptation strategies employed by smallholder farmers in Benue State. Understanding these strategies and the factors that influence their adoption is critical for designing policies and programs that enhance resilience, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and ensure food security in the region.
This study, therefore, seeks to investigate climate change adaptation strategies among smallholder farmers in Benue State, Nigeria. The findings will provide insights into local adaptation practices, identify constraints to effective adaptation, and inform policy recommendations to strengthen farmers’ resilience against climate change impacts.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Smallholder farmers in Benue State are highly exposed to climate-related risks due to their dependence on rain-fed agriculture, limited access to technological resources, and socio-economic vulnerabilities. Erratic rainfall, prolonged dry seasons, and increased flooding have become common, resulting in reduced crop yields, post-harvest losses, and declining household incomes. In some areas, farmers have reported complete crop failures during extreme events, threatening food security and livelihoods (FAO, 2019).
Despite the adoption of various coping and adaptation measures, there is insufficient empirical evidence on which strategies are most effective, which are widely adopted, and what socio-economic or institutional factors influence their use. Many smallholder farmers rely on indigenous knowledge or traditional practices, which may be insufficient to cope with unprecedented climate variability (Nwajiuba et al., 2016). Moreover, constraints such as lack of access to credit, poor infrastructural support, inadequate extension services, and limited awareness of climate-smart agricultural practices hinder the effective implementation of adaptation strategies.
The absence of systematic data on adaptation strategies in Benue State makes it difficult for policymakers, development agencies, and agricultural extension services to design interventions that enhance resilience and reduce vulnerability to climate change. Without such insights, smallholder farmers will continue to face significant risks, potentially exacerbating poverty, food insecurity, and rural-urban migration.
Hence, this study aims to fill the knowledge gap by assessing the climate change adaptation strategies employed by smallholder farmers in Benue State, evaluating their effectiveness, and identifying the socio-economic and institutional factors that influence their adoption.

1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on smallholder farmers in selected local government areas of Benue State. It examines the climate change-related challenges they face, the adaptation strategies employed, the socio-economic and institutional factors influencing adaptation, and the effectiveness of these strategies. Large-scale commercial farms and non-agricultural adaptation measures are outside the scope of this study.
