INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Municipal solid waste (MSW) management has become a major challenge for urban areas in developing countries due to rapid population growth, increased urbanization, industrial expansion, and changing consumption patterns. Poorly managed waste leads to environmental degradation, public health risks, and socio-economic problems (Hoornweg & Bhada-Tata, 2012). Municipalities are responsible for the collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal of solid waste, yet in many cities, resources and technical capacities are insufficient to cope with the increasing volume of waste.
Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Nigeria, is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), which comprises the city’s central districts, experiences a rapid influx of residents and businesses, generating enormous quantities of municipal solid waste daily. According to the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB, 2021), AMAC generates over 2,000 tons of solid waste per day, comprising household waste, commercial refuse, market waste, and construction debris. The composition of this waste includes organic matter, plastics, metals, glass, and hazardous materials.
Rapid urban growth in AMAC has overwhelmed existing waste management systems. Inadequate collection coverage, poor transportation, insufficient landfill capacity, and lack of recycling facilities contribute to indiscriminate dumping, open burning, and improper disposal of solid waste. Such practices lead to soil and water contamination, air pollution, proliferation of disease vectors, and deterioration of urban aesthetics (Ogbonna et al., 2019). Furthermore, improper solid waste management exacerbates flooding due to blocked drains, which is a recurring problem during the rainy season in parts of Abuja.
Environmental and public health implications of poor municipal solid waste management are significant. Open dumpsites produce leachates that contaminate surface and groundwater with heavy metals and pathogens, while the burning of waste releases toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and dioxins into the atmosphere (Guerrero et al., 2013). These pollutants can cause respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal infections, skin diseases, and other health complications among urban residents, especially in informal settlements where exposure to waste is high.
Despite ongoing interventions by the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and private waste management contractors, challenges persist due to poor infrastructure, low public awareness, weak enforcement of environmental regulations, and limited adoption of modern waste management technologies. There is also a dearth of empirical studies evaluating the effectiveness of municipal solid waste management practices and their environmental implications within AMAC. Without systematic evaluation, it is difficult for policymakers, urban planners, and environmental agencies to design effective strategies for sustainable waste management.
This study, therefore, aims to evaluate municipal solid waste management practices and their environmental implications in Abuja Municipal Area Council. The study will provide insights into current waste handling methods, their effectiveness, and the associated environmental risks, thereby informing policy and planning for sustainable urban waste management.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Rapid urbanization and population growth in AMAC have led to a significant increase in municipal solid waste generation. However, the waste management infrastructure has not kept pace with this growth, resulting in widespread environmental and health concerns. Current practices, including open dumping, open-air burning, and inadequate landfill disposal, contribute to soil contamination, water pollution, and air quality deterioration (Ogbonna et al., 2019).
Residents in various districts of AMAC report frequent exposure to foul odours, blocked drainage channels, and unsightly waste accumulation. Improper waste management also attracts rodents, insects, and other disease vectors, increasing the risk of waterborne and vector-borne diseases. Despite government regulations, enforcement is often weak, and public awareness on proper waste disposal remains low.
Additionally, there is limited empirical data evaluating the efficiency of collection systems, waste segregation practices, recycling initiatives, and the environmental impacts of waste disposal in AMAC. The lack of comprehensive information hinders effective planning, policy formulation, and implementation of sustainable waste management strategies. Without addressing these gaps, Abuja risks worsening environmental pollution, public health challenges, and reduced quality of urban life.
Therefore, a systematic evaluation of municipal solid waste management practices and their environmental implications in AMAC is necessary to provide actionable insights for urban sustainability and improved public health outcomes.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
