INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Water is a fundamental resource necessary for human survival, economic development, and ecological balance. In Nigeria, rapid industrialization, urbanization, and population growth have intensified environmental challenges, particularly the management of industrial and domestic waste (Adewumi & Oladipo, 2018). Industrial activities generate effluents containing heavy metals, chemicals, and other hazardous materials, while domestic waste, if not properly managed, contributes significantly to water pollution through the discharge of organic and inorganic contaminants (Olajire, 2020).
Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial hub, experiences high volumes of industrial discharge and domestic waste generation, resulting in deteriorating water quality in major rivers and canals (Ajibade et al., 2017). Kano, being a major industrial and agricultural center, faces similar challenges, with textile, tannery, and dyeing industries contributing to water contamination (Abubakar et al., 2019). Kogi State, with its mining, agricultural, and industrial activities, is also at risk, particularly in areas surrounding the Niger and Benue rivers, where untreated industrial effluents and household waste are often discharged directly into water bodies (Eze & Onyekwelu, 2021).
The deterioration of water quality due to poor waste management has far-reaching consequences, including the spread of waterborne diseases, destruction of aquatic ecosystems, and threats to socio-economic development. While various government agencies and environmental regulations exist, the effectiveness of industrial and domestic waste management practices in controlling water pollution remains uncertain in these states (Okoye & Ofoegbu, 2018). This situation underscores the need for a systematic assessment to identify gaps in waste management practices and their impacts on water quality.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Nigeria continues to grapple with environmental pollution, especially water contamination resulting from poor waste management. In Lagos, Kogi, and Kano states, industrial and domestic wastes are often indiscriminately disposed of into rivers, streams, and drainage systems. In Lagos, studies have shown that industrial effluents discharged into waterways contribute to high levels of heavy metals and toxic chemicals in the water (Ajibade et al., 2017). Kano faces similar challenges with industrial and agricultural waste, leading to eutrophication and contamination of water bodies (Abubakar et al., 2019). In Kogi, mining and domestic activities have exacerbated the problem, posing serious health and environmental risks (Eze & Onyekwelu, 2021).
Despite various environmental regulations such as the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) Act, enforcement remains weak, and local communities often lack awareness of proper waste disposal practices. Consequently, the link between industrial/domestic waste management and water quality deterioration is poorly understood, limiting effective policy interventions. This study seeks to address this gap by assessing current waste management practices and evaluating their impacts on water quality in Lagos, Kogi, and Kano States.
1.3 Research Objectives
The primary objective of this study is to assess industrial and domestic waste management practices and their impact on water quality in Lagos, Kogi, and Kano States. The specific objectives are:

To assess the impact of industrial and domestic waste on water quality in major water bodies in these states.

1.5 Research Hypothesis
To achieve the objectives of this study, the following hypothesis will be tested:
H₀: Industrial and domestic waste management practices have no significant impact on water quality in Lagos, Kogi, and Kano States.
H₁: Industrial and domestic waste management practices have a significant impact on water quality in Lagos, Kogi, and Kano States.

1.7 Scope of the Study

It examines major industries, household waste disposal patterns, and water quality parameters such as pH, turbidity, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and heavy metal concentrations. The study covers a period of 2020–2025 to capture current practices and trends.
1.8 Operational Definitions of Terms

Industrial Waste: By-products generated from manufacturing, production, and processing activities that are discarded as unwanted materials.
