INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Education is universally acknowledged as a powerful instrument for social, economic, and national development. At the secondary school level, education plays a crucial role in equipping students with knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for higher education and productive participation in society. However, the achievement of educational objectives depends largely on the quality of the school environment in which teaching and learning take place. The school physical environment refers to the tangible, infrastructural, and environmental conditions of a school, including classrooms, buildings, furniture, ventilation, lighting, sanitation facilities, libraries, laboratories, and general school surroundings (Earthman, 2002).
Globally, studies have demonstrated that the physical condition of schools significantly influences students’ academic performance, motivation, and overall well-being. Well-designed and adequately maintained school facilities promote effective teaching, enhance students’ concentration, and create a positive learning atmosphere. Conversely, poorly maintained buildings, overcrowded classrooms, inadequate furniture, and unsafe environments hinder learning and negatively affect students’ academic outcomes (Uline & Tschannen-Moran, 2008).
In developing countries, especially in rural areas, the condition of school physical environments often falls below acceptable standards. Rural secondary schools commonly face challenges such as dilapidated classrooms, lack of electricity, poor ventilation, inadequate learning facilities, and insufficient instructional materials. These challenges contribute to disparities in educational quality and academic performance between urban and rural schools (UNESCO, 2015).
In Nigeria, the problem of poor school physical environment is more pronounced in rural areas due to limited government funding, poor infrastructure development, and neglect of rural education. Many rural secondary schools operate in buildings that are in need of repair, lack basic facilities such as libraries and laboratories, and have insufficient desks and chairs for students (Federal Republic of Nigeria [FRN], 2013). Such conditions negatively affect students’ comfort, health, and ability to concentrate during lessons.
Kogi State is predominantly rural, with many secondary schools located in communities that have limited access to basic infrastructure. Adavi Local Government Area is one of the rural LGAs in Kogi State where several secondary schools face challenges related to poor physical environments. Some schools lack adequate classroom space, proper ventilation, functional laboratories, and conducive learning environments. These challenges may contribute to poor academic performance and low student motivation in rural secondary schools within the area.
Empirical studies have established a strong relationship between school physical environment and students’ academic performance. Research indicates that students in schools with adequate physical facilities tend to perform better academically than those in poorly equipped schools (Earthman, 2002; Adeogun & Osifila, 2008). Despite the importance of the school physical environment, there is limited empirical research focusing specifically on rural secondary schools in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of school physical environment on the academic performance of students in rural secondary schools in Adavi LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The quality of secondary education in rural areas of Nigeria is often undermined by poor school physical environments. In Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State, many rural secondary schools operate under conditions that are not conducive to effective teaching and learning. Observations reveal that some schools have dilapidated classroom buildings, cracked walls, leaking roofs, inadequate furniture, and poor ventilation. In some cases, students are forced to sit on the floor or share desks, while classrooms lack sufficient lighting and instructional spaces.
These poor physical conditions pose serious challenges to students’ academic performance. Learning in overcrowded or poorly ventilated classrooms can lead to discomfort, fatigue, and health problems, which reduce students’ ability to concentrate and participate actively in lessons. Inadequate facilities such as libraries and science laboratories limit students’ exposure to practical learning experiences, thereby affecting their understanding of subject matter and performance in examinations.
Despite government efforts to improve educational infrastructure, rural secondary schools in Adavi LGA continue to face neglect and insufficient funding. While several studies have examined the influence of school environment on academic performance in urban areas, there is a lack of empirical research focusing specifically on rural secondary schools in Adavi Local Government Area. This gap in knowledge makes it difficult for policymakers and education stakeholders to design targeted interventions aimed at improving school facilities in rural communities.
Therefore, the problem addressed in this study is the inadequate understanding of how the school physical environment affects students’ academic performance in rural secondary schools in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State. This study seeks to provide empirical evidence that can inform policy decisions and contribute to improving the quality of secondary education in rural areas.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the school physical environment on the academic performance of students in rural secondary schools in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The specific objectives of the study are to:

assess the condition of the physical environment in rural secondary schools in Adavi LGA;

determine the relationship between school physical environment and students’ academic performance; and

1.6 Research Hypothesis
H₀: School physical environment has no significant effect on the academic performance of students in rural secondary schools in Adavi Local Government Area, Kogi State.
1.7 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be beneficial to education policymakers, school administrators, teachers, students, and researchers. Policymakers and the Kogi State Ministry of Education will benefit from empirical evidence that can guide infrastructure development and resource allocation for rural schools. School administrators will gain insights into the importance of maintaining a conducive physical environment for effective teaching and learning. Teachers and students will benefit from improved school facilities, while researchers will find the study useful as a reference for future studies on school environment and academic performance.
1.8 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to rural secondary schools in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State. It focuses on the school physical environment as the independent variable and students’ academic performance as the dependent variable. Other factors influencing academic performance, such as teacher quality and socio-economic background, are acknowledged but not examined in detail.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms
