INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Education is a fundamental instrument for personal, societal, and national development. The effectiveness of learning in schools depends not only on teacher quality and instructional materials but also on the physical conditions of classrooms. Classroom environmental factors, particularly ventilation and lighting, play a crucial role in students’ comfort, concentration, and overall academic performance (Earthman, 2002; Barrett et al., 2015). Ventilation ensures a continuous supply of fresh air, reduces carbon dioxide levels, and maintains optimal temperature and humidity, while adequate lighting—both natural and artificial—supports visual comfort, reduces eye strain, and enhances attention and focus.
Globally, research has established a positive relationship between well-ventilated, well-lit classrooms and students’ cognitive functioning and concentration. Students in classrooms with optimal airflow and lighting exhibit higher engagement, longer attention spans, better comprehension, and improved academic achievement (Higgins et al., 2005; Barrett et al., 2015). Conversely, poorly ventilated or inadequately lit classrooms can lead to fatigue, headaches, reduced alertness, and distractions, which negatively impact learning outcomes.
In Nigeria, classroom environmental conditions vary widely across urban and peri-urban schools. While some urban schools have relatively modern facilities, many public secondary schools suffer from overcrowded classrooms, poor ventilation, inadequate windows, insufficient artificial lighting, and faulty electrical installations (Federal Republic of Nigeria [FRN], 2013). These conditions affect students’ ability to concentrate during lessons and may contribute to lower academic performance.
Wuse, a prominent district in Abuja, hosts numerous public and private secondary schools. Observations indicate that several classrooms in selected public schools in Wuse have limited windows, poor cross-ventilation, inadequate lighting, and overcrowded seating arrangements. These environmental deficits can cause discomfort, reduce students’ attention span, and impair their ability to retain information (UNESCO, 2017). Despite the significance of classroom ventilation and lighting on learning, there is limited empirical research assessing their specific impact on students’ concentration in secondary schools in Wuse. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the effect of classroom ventilation and lighting on students’ concentration in five selected secondary schools in Wuse, Abuja.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Effective learning requires students to concentrate and actively engage in classroom activities. In many secondary schools in Wuse, Abuja, classrooms often suffer from poor ventilation, limited natural light, inadequate artificial lighting, and overcrowded seating. These conditions create discomfort, reduce alertness, and may impair students’ ability to focus on lessons. Consequently, students may experience decreased attention span, fatigue, and difficulty understanding and retaining information, which can negatively affect their academic performance.
While teachers strive to deliver lessons effectively, suboptimal classroom environments limit the impact of their instructional efforts. Despite recognition of the importance of classroom ventilation and lighting, there is a paucity of empirical data on how these factors specifically influence students’ concentration in selected secondary schools in Wuse. Without such evidence, school administrators and policymakers cannot design effective interventions to improve classroom environmental conditions, enhance students’ attention, and optimize learning outcomes. Therefore, this study seeks to fill this knowledge gap by investigating the impact of classroom ventilation and lighting on students’ concentration in five selected secondary schools in Wuse, Abuja.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the impact of classroom ventilation and lighting on students’ concentration in five selected secondary schools in Wuse, Abuja.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The specific objectives of the study are to:

assess the ventilation conditions of classrooms in the selected secondary schools;

evaluate the adequacy of lighting in these classrooms;

examine the level of students’ concentration in relation to classroom ventilation and lighting; and

identify challenges affecting optimal classroom environmental conditions in the selected schools.

1.6 Research Hypothesis
H₀: Classroom ventilation and lighting have no significant impact on students’ concentration in the selected secondary schools in Wuse, Abuja.
1.7 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will benefit school administrators, teachers, students, policymakers, and researchers. School administrators will gain insights into the importance of classroom environmental conditions for promoting concentration and effective learning. Teachers will understand how ventilation and lighting influence students’ attention and engagement, allowing them to adapt teaching strategies accordingly. Students will benefit from improved classroom environments, which can enhance learning and academic performance. Policymakers and the Federal Capital Territory Ministry of Education can use the findings to guide infrastructure planning and classroom design. Researchers will find the study useful for future investigations into the relationship between school environment and learning outcomes.
1.8 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to five selected secondary schools in Wuse, Abuja. It focuses on classroom ventilation and lighting as independent variables and students’ concentration as the dependent variable. Other factors affecting concentration and learning outcomes, such as teacher quality, curriculum, and home environment, are acknowledged but not examined in this study.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms

Classroom Ventilation: The movement and circulation of air in classrooms to maintain fresh air and appropriate temperature and humidity.
