Project – School Environmental Cleanliness and Students’ Health from five Selected Secondary Schools in Ibadan
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
A clean and healthy school environment is a fundamental requirement for effective teaching, learning, and the overall well-being of students. Schools are not only centers for academic instruction but also environments where students spend a significant portion of their daily lives. As such, the state of school environmental cleanliness plays a crucial role in promoting students’ physical health, emotional well-being, and academic productivity. School environmental cleanliness refers to the level of sanitation, hygiene, waste management, drainage, water supply, classroom cleanliness, toilet facilities, and general surroundings of a school.
Students’ health is closely linked to the quality of their learning environment. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2018), unhealthy school environments contribute significantly to the spread of communicable diseases such as malaria, diarrhea, cholera, typhoid fever, and respiratory infections among school-aged children. Poor sanitation, dirty classrooms, improper waste disposal, and stagnant water around school premises create breeding grounds for disease-causing organisms, thereby exposing students to frequent illnesses that may affect school attendance and learning outcomes.
In Nigeria, environmental cleanliness in public secondary schools remains a major concern, particularly in urban centers where population density and waste generation are high. Many schools operate with inadequate sanitation facilities, poorly maintained toilets, insufficient water supply, and ineffective waste disposal systems. These conditions often compromise students’ health and safety, leading to increased absenteeism, reduced concentration, and poor academic engagement (Akinwale, 2010). Studies have shown that students who frequently fall ill are less likely to perform well academically due to disrupted learning and reduced cognitive focus (Oyedeji & Olatunji, 2014).
Ibadan, one of the largest metropolitan cities in Nigeria, has numerous public secondary schools with varying levels of environmental cleanliness. While some schools maintain relatively clean surroundings through effective management and community support, others struggle with waste accumulation, blocked drainage systems, overcrowded classrooms, and unsanitary toilet facilities. The rapid urbanization of Ibadan has further intensified environmental sanitation challenges, which may negatively affect students’ health conditions.
Maintaining a clean school environment requires collective efforts from school administrators, teachers, students, government agencies, and community stakeholders. Cleanliness policies, regular sanitation exercises, health education, and adequate provision of facilities are essential for ensuring a healthy school environment. Given the strong relationship between environmental cleanliness and health, it is important to empirically examine how school environmental cleanliness affects students’ health outcomes. This study therefore investigates school environmental cleanliness and students’ health in five selected secondary schools in Ibadan, with the aim of generating evidence that can inform school health policies and environmental management practices.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The health status of students in many public secondary schools in Nigeria has become a growing concern among parents, educators, and public health practitioners. Despite the recognition of schools as critical settings for promoting health and hygiene, many secondary schools still operate in environments characterized by poor sanitation and inadequate cleanliness. These conditions pose serious risks to students’ health and well-being.
In many secondary schools in Ibadan, issues such as unclean classrooms, poorly maintained toilets, inadequate waste disposal facilities, stagnant water, and lack of potable water are common. These unsanitary conditions expose students to various health hazards, including infectious diseases, skin infections, and respiratory problems. Frequent illness among students often results in absenteeism, low participation in school activities, and reduced academic performance.
Furthermore, the lack of effective environmental sanitation policies and inadequate monitoring of cleanliness standards in schools exacerbate the problem. Some schools lack sufficient cleaning personnel, sanitation materials, and health education programmes to promote hygienic practices among students. Although previous studies have examined school health and sanitation in Nigeria, limited research has specifically focused on the relationship between school environmental cleanliness and students’ health in secondary schools within Ibadan metropolis.
The persistent occurrence of health-related complaints among students raises critical questions about the adequacy of environmental cleanliness in schools and its impact on students’ health. Without empirical data on this relationship, efforts to improve school health conditions may remain ineffective or poorly targeted. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to examine the relationship between school environmental cleanliness and students’ health in five selected secondary schools in Ibadan.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between school environmental cleanliness and students’ health in selected secondary schools in Ibadan.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
-
assess the level of environmental cleanliness in the selected secondary schools;
-
identify common health challenges experienced by students in the selected schools;
-
examine the relationship between school environmental cleanliness and students’ health.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions guide the study:
-
What is the level of environmental cleanliness in the selected secondary schools in Ibadan?
-
What common health problems do students experience in these schools?
-
What relationship exists between school environmental cleanliness and students’ health?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following hypothesis is tested at 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between school environmental cleanliness and students’ health in selected secondary schools in Ibadan.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be beneficial to school administrators, teachers, health officers, government agencies, parents, and students. School administrators may use the findings to improve sanitation practices and enforce cleanliness standards. Government and health agencies may rely on the results to strengthen school health programmes and environmental sanitation policies. Teachers and students will benefit from improved awareness of hygiene practices, while parents and community stakeholders may become more involved in supporting school cleanliness initiatives.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to five selected public secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo State. It focuses on aspects of environmental cleanliness such as classroom hygiene, toilet facilities, waste disposal, water supply, and school surroundings as they relate to students’ health.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
-
School Environmental Cleanliness: The level of sanitation, hygiene, and general cleanliness of school facilities and surroundings.
-
Students’ Health: The physical well-being of students, including the absence or presence of illnesses and health-related conditions.
-
Secondary School Students: Learners enrolled in public secondary schools.
