INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Art-Based Learning (ABL) is an educational approach that integrates artistic activities such as drawing, painting, drama, and visual storytelling into the teaching and learning process across various subjects (Eisner, 2002). The approach emphasizes creativity, experiential learning, and active participation, which can enhance students’ cognitive, emotional, and social development. In the context of History education, Art-Based Learning provides students with opportunities to engage with historical content through visual representation, role-play, dramatization, and creative projects, making abstract or distant historical events more tangible and relatable (Deasy, 2002).

Interest and engagement in History lessons are essential for effective learning, as they motivate students to explore historical concepts, develop critical thinking, and retain knowledge (Fredricks, Blumenfeld & Paris, 2004). Traditional methods of teaching History in Nigeria often rely heavily on rote learning and lecture-based instruction, which may limit students’ enthusiasm and active participation (Oluwatoyin, 2017). Art-Based Learning presents an alternative by allowing students to construct knowledge actively, collaborate with peers, and express understanding creatively, which may increase both interest and engagement.

Globally, studies have demonstrated that integrating arts into curriculum delivery improves students’ motivation, understanding, and retention of academic content (Winner, Goldstein & Vincent-Lancrin, 2013). In the Nigerian context, particularly in secondary schools in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, research on the application of Art-Based Learning in History education remains limited. Many History teachers continue to use traditional lecture methods, potentially contributing to low student engagement, diminished interest, and poor academic outcomes. Exploring the effect of Art-Based Learning in History can provide insights into how creative approaches influence students’ learning experiences and outcomes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized benefits of Art-Based Learning, students in Ado-Ekiti often show low interest and engagement in History lessons. Many History classes rely on memorization of dates, events, and facts, with minimal opportunities for students to interact creatively with the content (Oluwatoyin, 2017). This has resulted in reduced motivation, passive learning, and poor retention of historical knowledge.

Furthermore, teachers often lack training in implementing Art-Based Learning strategies and schools may have limited resources for creative instructional activities, such as art supplies or visual aids. This creates a gap between the potential of Art-Based Learning to enhance student engagement and its practical implementation in classrooms. The problem underscores the need to investigate how Art-Based Learning can influence students’ interest and engagement in History lessons in Ado-Ekiti, providing empirical evidence for educational practices that enhance learning outcomes.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of Art-Based Learning on students’ interest and engagement in History lessons in secondary schools in Ado-Ekiti. The specific objectives are:

1. To determine the impact of Art-Based Learning on students’ interest in History lessons.

2. To examine the effect of Art-Based Learning on students’ engagement during History lessons.

3. To assess how Art-Based Learning influences students’ motivation to participate in History-related activities.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1. To what extent does Art-Based Learning affect students’ interest in History lessons?

2. How does Art-Based Learning influence students’ engagement during History lessons?

3. What is the effect of Art-Based Learning on students’ motivation to participate in History activities?

1.5 Hypothesis

Ho₁: Art-Based Learning has no significant effect on students’ interest and engagement in History lessons in Ado-Ekiti.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is significant in several ways:

1. Students: The findings will help students appreciate creative learning methods that make History lessons more interesting and engaging.

2. Teachers: History teachers will gain insights into using Art-Based Learning strategies to enhance classroom engagement and student interest.

3. Policy Makers: Education authorities can use the findings to guide curriculum development, teacher training, and provision of resources for Art-Based Learning.

4. Future Research: The study will serve as a basis for further research on integrating arts into different subjects to improve learning outcomes in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on senior secondary school students in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. It examines the effect of Art-Based Learning strategies on students’ interest, engagement, and motivation during History lessons. The research is limited to the use of visual arts, dramatization, and creative classroom activities in History teaching.
