CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Moral education is an integral aspect of human development, providing individuals with the framework to distinguish right from wrong and to cultivate ethical behaviors that promote social cohesion. In contemporary society, the erosion of moral values among youths has become a growing concern, particularly in urban centers where exposure to diverse cultural and social influences is high. Schools are considered critical institutions for moral development, and religious education—especially Christian education—has been historically recognized as a means of nurturing moral consciousness and guiding behavior (Okeke, 2015).

Christian education encompasses formal and informal teachings derived from the Bible and the doctrines of the Christian faith, often delivered within schools affiliated with the church or integrated into public school curricula. This form of education seeks not only to impart religious knowledge but also to foster virtues such as honesty, respect, compassion, diligence, and self-discipline (Adeyemo, 2016). In Nigeria, secondary school students are at a formative stage where moral values and character traits are significantly shaped. The influence of Christian education during this stage can therefore be crucial in guiding adolescents toward positive behavioral patterns and social responsibility.

Surulere Local Government Area (LGA) in Lagos State is a cosmopolitan area characterized by a diverse population and a mix of public and private secondary schools, many of which include Christian religious instruction as part of their curriculum. Despite the inclusion of Christian education, reports suggest a rising trend in unethical behaviors such as cheating, bullying, disrespect for authority, and other anti-social tendencies among students (Adebayo, 2018). This scenario raises important questions about the effectiveness of Christian education in shaping the moral values of secondary school students in urban settings like Surulere.

Several scholars argue that while Christian education has the potential to instill moral values, its effectiveness may be influenced by factors such as teaching methodology, frequency of religious instruction, the moral orientation of teachers, parental involvement, and students’ personal attitudes toward religion (Okafor, 2017). Furthermore, the increasing influence of social media, peer pressure, and exposure to secular lifestyles may undermine the moral lessons imparted in Christian education. Understanding the relationship between Christian education and students’ moral values is therefore essential for policymakers, educators, and religious institutions seeking to promote ethical behavior and character development among youths.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The moral development of adolescents is a subject of concern globally, with rising incidents of deviant behaviors among secondary school students being reported in many urban centers, including Lagos State. In Surulere LGA, there have been increasing concerns over students’ involvement in unethical practices such as truancy, bullying, substance abuse, examination malpractice, and disrespect for authority figures (Adebayo, 2018). These behaviors suggest that, despite exposure to Christian education in schools, moral lapses persist among students.

Christian education is intended to serve as a moral compass for students, fostering values such as honesty, respect, empathy, and responsibility. However, there is limited empirical evidence in Surulere LGA to demonstrate whether Christian education effectively influences the moral values of secondary school students. The gap between religious instruction and observed moral behaviors raises questions about the adequacy of current pedagogical approaches, students’ receptivity, and the external factors that might dilute the impact of Christian education.

This study, therefore, seeks to investigate the influence of Christian education on moral values among secondary school students in Surulere LGA, Lagos State, with the aim of identifying whether religious teachings correlate with improved ethical conduct and character formation in students. The findings will contribute to better understanding the role of Christian education in moral development and inform strategies for enhancing its effectiveness in urban secondary schools.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of Christian education on moral values among secondary school students in Surulere LGA, Lagos State. The specific objectives are:

1. To assess the level of Christian education received by secondary school students in Surulere LGA.

2. To determine the moral values exhibited by secondary school students in Surulere LGA.

3. To examine the relationship between Christian education and moral values among secondary school students.

4. To identify challenges that limit the effectiveness of Christian education in promoting moral values among students.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1. What is the level of Christian education received by secondary school students in Surulere LGA?

2. What moral values are demonstrated by secondary school students in Surulere LGA?

3. What is the relationship between Christian education and moral values among secondary school students?

4. What are the challenges that hinder Christian education from effectively promoting moral values among students?

1.5 Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between Christian education and moral values among secondary school students in Surulere LGA.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between Christian education and moral values among secondary school students in Surulere LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study are expected to be beneficial in several ways:

• For educators: It will provide insights into the effectiveness of Christian education in fostering moral values, guiding curriculum development and teaching methods.

• For policymakers: It will inform policies aimed at integrating moral and religious education effectively in schools.

• For parents and guardians: It will raise awareness of the role of Christian education in shaping children’s ethical behavior.

• For future researchers: It will serve as a foundation for further studies on the relationship between religious education and moral development in adolescents.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on secondary school students in Surulere LGA, Lagos State. It examines the influence of Christian education on moral values, specifically assessing the moral behaviors demonstrated by students and how these are shaped by religious teachings. The study is limited to the period of one academic session and concentrates on students in both public and private secondary schools.

1.8 Definition of Terms

• Christian Education: Formal or informal teaching based on Christian doctrines intended to impart religious knowledge and moral values.

• Moral Values: Principles and standards of behavior considered desirable in society, such as honesty, respect, compassion, and responsibility.

• Secondary School Students: Individuals enrolled in junior and senior secondary schools, typically aged 12–18 years.

• Influence: The capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone.
