Project – Effectiveness of Lesson Note on teachers’ classroom performance in five Selected Primary Schools in Ikorodu
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Education is a critical tool for national development and the holistic growth of individuals. In primary schools, effective teaching plays a central role in ensuring that learners acquire foundational knowledge and skills that form the basis for lifelong learning (Okeke, 2015). One of the tools that significantly enhance teaching effectiveness is the lesson note. A lesson note is a detailed plan prepared by a teacher that outlines the objectives, content, instructional strategies, teaching aids, and assessment methods for a particular lesson (Eze, 2016). It serves as a guide to ensure that teaching is systematic, organized, and aligned with curriculum requirements.
The importance of lesson notes in classroom teaching cannot be overemphasized. Properly prepared lesson notes enable teachers to organize content logically, manage time efficiently, select appropriate teaching strategies, and evaluate learning outcomes. In addition, lesson notes serve as a reference point during instruction, helping teachers stay focused and maintain consistency in delivering lessons (Olaleye, 2018). Primary school teachers in Nigeria are expected to prepare lesson notes for every subject they teach to ensure effective curriculum delivery and promote positive learning outcomes.
Despite the clear benefits, studies indicate that lesson notes are often underutilized or poorly prepared in many primary schools. Some teachers rely on improvisation or previous experience rather than systematic planning, leading to inconsistencies in instruction and gaps in learners’ understanding (Ajayi & Adepoju, 2017). In urban areas like Ikorodu, Lagos State, teachers face challenges such as overcrowded classrooms, limited teaching resources, and time constraints, which may affect the quality and utilization of lesson notes.
The effectiveness of lesson notes is closely linked to teachers’ classroom performance, which encompasses lesson delivery, classroom management, learner engagement, and assessment of learning outcomes. Effective lesson notes guide teachers in presenting content clearly, using appropriate teaching aids, and evaluating learners’ understanding, thereby enhancing both teaching and learning outcomes (Olayinka, 2019). Understanding how lesson notes influence teachers’ performance in the classroom is critical for educational planning, teacher training, and policy formulation.
This study focuses on five selected primary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State: Ikorodu Model Primary School, Ijede Primary School, Obanikoro Primary School, Ayobo Primary School, and Imota Primary School. These schools were selected due to their urban setting, diverse student populations, and representation of typical primary school teaching environments in Lagos. The study investigates how lesson notes affect teachers’ classroom performance and identifies factors that enhance or hinder their effectiveness.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Effective classroom teaching is essential for learner achievement, yet many primary schools in Nigeria continue to report challenges related to teachers’ instructional performance. Inadequate preparation, poor use of teaching aids, and lack of structured lesson planning often result in substandard teaching and learning outcomes (Ajayi & Adepoju, 2017).
Lesson notes are intended to serve as guides to improve classroom performance, but in many schools, they are either not properly prepared or not consistently followed during teaching. Some teachers prepare lesson notes superficially to meet administrative requirements without using them as active teaching guides (Eze, 2016). This gap between lesson planning and classroom execution may negatively affect lesson delivery, student engagement, and overall learning outcomes.
Additionally, in urban areas like Ikorodu, teachers face high student-to-teacher ratios, time pressures, and limited resources, which may compromise the quality of lesson notes and their implementation (Olaleye, 2018). There is therefore a need to empirically investigate the effectiveness of lesson notes on teachers’ classroom performance to determine the extent to which properly prepared lesson notes influence teaching quality, student participation, and learning outcomes.
This study addresses the following problem: To what extent does the use of lesson notes affect teachers’ classroom performance in selected primary schools in Ikorodu, Lagos State?
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The objectives of this study are:
-
To examine the extent to which primary school teachers in Ikorodu prepare lesson notes for classroom instruction.
-
To determine the impact of lesson note utilization on teachers’ classroom performance.
-
To identify challenges associated with the preparation and use of lesson notes by teachers.
-
To recommend strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of lesson notes in improving classroom performance.
1.4 Research Questions
The study is guided by the following research questions:
-
To what extent do primary school teachers in Ikorodu prepare lesson notes for classroom instruction?
