INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Education is widely recognized as a fundamental tool for national development and individual empowerment. In Nigeria, secondary education serves as a critical bridge between primary and tertiary education, shaping students’ intellectual, social, emotional, and vocational development. The objectives of secondary education, as outlined in the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2013) National Policy on Education, include preparing students for useful living within society and for higher education. Achieving these objectives requires not only effective classroom instruction but also adequate support systems such as school counselling services.

School counselling services have become an integral component of modern educational systems across the globe. In many developed countries, comprehensive school counselling programs are structured to address students’ academic, career, social, and emotional needs. Organizations such as the American School Counselor Association emphasize that counselling programs improve academic achievement, promote positive behavior, and enhance students’ readiness for post-secondary opportunities. Counselling services typically include academic guidance, career counselling, personal–social counselling, appraisal services, orientation programs, and referral services.

In the Nigerian context, school counselling services were formally introduced into the educational system in the 1970s following the recommendations of the National Policy on Education. Since then, guidance counsellors have been assigned to secondary schools to assist students in making informed educational and vocational decisions, managing personal challenges, and developing positive attitudes toward learning. However, the implementation and effectiveness of these services vary significantly across states and local government areas.

Academic performance remains a key indicator of educational success. It is often measured through students’ grades, examination results, and overall academic achievement in internal and external examinations such as those conducted by the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council. Persistent poor performance in public secondary schools in some parts of Lagos State, including Ikorodu Local Government Area, has raised concerns among educators, parents, and policymakers. Factors contributing to poor academic performance may include inadequate study habits, emotional instability, peer pressure, family background issues, lack of motivation, and poor career orientation.

School counselling services are designed to address many of these challenges. Through individualized and group counselling sessions, counsellors help students identify personal strengths and weaknesses, set academic goals, improve study skills, manage stress, and resolve personal or social conflicts that may hinder learning. Counselling interventions can foster self-confidence, discipline, time management skills, and intrinsic motivation—qualities strongly associated with improved academic outcomes.

In Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State, public secondary schools cater to a large and diverse student population. Many students face socio-economic challenges, family instability, and peer-related pressures that may negatively affect their academic engagement. Effective school counselling services could play a significant role in mitigating these challenges by providing structured support systems within the school environment.

Despite the recognized importance of counselling services, anecdotal evidence suggests that some public secondary schools in Ikorodu LGA may lack adequately trained counsellors, proper counselling facilities, or structured counselling programs. In some schools, counselling duties are assigned to teachers without professional training in guidance and counselling. This situation may limit the effectiveness of counselling services and reduce their potential impact on students’ academic performance.

Therefore, there is a need to empirically examine the impact of school counselling services on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State. Such a study will provide evidence-based insights into the effectiveness of counselling services and inform policy decisions aimed at strengthening support systems within schools.

Statement of the Problem

Academic performance in public secondary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area has remained a subject of concern among stakeholders in the education sector. Reports of low pass rates in external examinations, declining student motivation, indiscipline, absenteeism, and poor study habits suggest that many students may not be achieving their full academic potential.

Although school counselling services are designed to address academic, personal, and social challenges affecting students, their actual impact on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Ikorodu LGA is not clearly established. In some schools, counselling units may be under-resourced, poorly structured, or staffed by unqualified personnel. Students may also be unaware of the availability or relevance of counselling services, leading to underutilization.

Furthermore, the increasing complexity of students’ challenges—ranging from peer pressure and examination anxiety to family instability and career confusion—demands effective professional intervention. Without proper counselling support, students may struggle to cope with these issues, which could negatively affect their concentration, commitment to academic tasks, and overall performance.

Despite the assumed benefits of school counselling services, there is limited empirical evidence specifically focused on public secondary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State. This gap in knowledge makes it difficult for educational administrators and policymakers to assess whether existing counselling services are effective or require improvement.

The problem of this study, therefore, is to investigate whether school counselling services significantly impact students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State.

Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the impact of school counselling services on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Examine the availability of school counselling services in public secondary schools in Ikorodu LGA.

2. Determine the extent to which students utilize school counselling services.

3. Assess the perceived effectiveness of counselling services in addressing students’ academic challenges.

4. Examine the relationship between school counselling services and students’ academic performance.

Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. Are school counselling services available in public secondary schools in Ikorodu LGA?

2. To what extent do students utilize school counselling services?

3. How effective are school counselling services in addressing students’ academic challenges?

4. What is the relationship between school counselling services and students’ academic performance?

Research Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between school counselling services and students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between school counselling services and students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State.

Significance of the Study

This study will be significant to several stakeholders:

Students: The findings will highlight the importance of counselling services in improving academic performance and personal development.

School Administrators: The study will provide insights into the effectiveness of existing counselling programs and guide decisions regarding staffing and resource allocation.

Guidance Counsellors: The research will help counsellors understand their impact on students’ academic outcomes and identify areas for professional improvement.

Parents: The findings will increase parents’ awareness of the role of counselling services in supporting their children’s academic success.

Educational Policymakers: The study will provide empirical evidence to support policies aimed at strengthening counselling services in public secondary schools.

Researchers: The study will contribute to existing literature on guidance and counselling and serve as a reference for future research.

Scope of the Study

The study will focus on public secondary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State. It will examine the availability, utilization, and effectiveness of school counselling services and their relationship with students’ academic performance. The study will be limited to selected public secondary schools within the LGA and will involve students and guidance counsellors.

Operational Definition of Terms

School Counselling Services: Professional support services provided within the school setting to assist students with academic, career, personal, and social issues.

Academic Performance: Students’ level of achievement in school subjects, measured through examination results, grades, and overall academic outcomes.

Public Secondary Schools: Government-owned secondary schools funded and managed by the Lagos State Government.

Impact: The measurable effect or influence of one variable (school counselling services) on another variable (academic performance).
