INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Examination malpractice has become one of the most persistent challenges confronting the Nigerian educational system, particularly at the secondary school level. It refers to any deliberate act of wrongdoing before, during, or after an examination with the intention of obtaining undue advantage. According to West African Examinations Council(WAEC), examination malpractice includes acts such as impersonation, bringing unauthorized materials into the examination hall, collusion, copying, and leakage of examination questions. These practices undermine the credibility of certificates and weaken the integrity of the educational system.

In Nigeria, secondary school education serves as a foundation for higher education and career development. National examinations conducted by bodies such as the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council determine students’ eligibility for admission into tertiary institutions. However, intense competition for limited admission spaces, societal pressure for academic success, parental expectations, and fear of failure have contributed significantly to the rising cases of examination malpractice among students (Oluyeba & Daramola, 2020).

Research has shown that examination malpractice is not only a moral issue but also a psychological and social problem. Students often engage in malpractice due to anxiety, low self-esteem, poor study habits, peer pressure, and inadequate preparation (Emaikwu, 2012). In some cases, poor supervision and ineffective school disciplinary systems further encourage such misconduct. The consequences of examination malpractice are far-reaching. It produces graduates who lack competence, reduces employers’ trust in academic qualifications, and contributes to corruption in the broader society (Ijaiya, 2004).

Guidance and counselling services were introduced into Nigerian schools to address students’ academic, social, and emotional challenges. The Federal Government of Nigeria recognizes guidance counselling as an essential support service in schools (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2014). Guidance counsellors are trained professionals who assist students in developing appropriate study habits, coping with academic stress, building self-confidence, and making responsible decisions. Through individual counselling, group counselling, career guidance, and moral instruction, counsellors can influence students’ attitudes and behaviours toward academic honesty.

In the context of examination malpractice, guidance counsellors play preventive and corrective roles. Preventively, they organize orientation programmes and seminars that educate students on the dangers and consequences of malpractice. Correctively, they provide counselling interventions to students who exhibit tendencies toward dishonest behaviour. According to Omoniyi (2016), effective counselling services significantly reduce students’ involvement in examination malpractice by promoting ethical awareness and self-discipline.

Within Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State, secondary schools continue to face challenges related to examination misconduct. Despite government regulations and school disciplinary measures, cases of cheating and related offences are still reported during internal and external examinations. While punitive measures such as suspension and cancellation of results are often applied, less emphasis is placed on behavioural reformation through counselling interventions. This situation raises questions about the extent to which guidance counsellors are actively involved in reducing examination malpractice and how effective their interventions are in promoting academic integrity.

Therefore, understanding the role of guidance counsellors in curbing examination malpractice among secondary school students in Zaria Local Government Area is crucial. This study seeks to examine how counselling services contribute to reducing malpractice and fostering ethical academic behaviour among students.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Examination malpractice has continued to threaten the credibility of secondary school education in Nigeria. Despite strict regulations by examination bodies such as the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council, incidents of cheating, impersonation, and collusion persist in many secondary schools. In Zaria Local Government Area, anecdotal reports from school administrators and teachers indicate that students still engage in dishonest examination practices.

The persistence of examination malpractice suggests that punitive measures alone may not be sufficient to address the problem. Many schools focus primarily on punishment rather than preventive strategies such as counselling and moral re-orientation. Students who are anxious about academic performance, pressured by peers or parents, or inadequately prepared for examinations may resort to malpractice as a coping mechanism (Emaikwu, 2012). Without proper psychological and academic support, these underlying issues remain unresolved.

Although guidance counsellors are expected to assist students in developing positive study habits, self-confidence, and ethical values, it appears that their roles in combating examination malpractice are either underutilized or not fully effective in some secondary schools in Zaria Local Government Area. Some schools lack adequately trained counsellors, while others do not provide sufficient resources for counselling programmes.

Therefore, the problem of this study is to determine whether guidance counsellors are effectively playing their roles in reducing examination malpractice among secondary school students in Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the role of guidance counsellors in reducing examination malpractice among secondary school students in Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Examine the causes of examination malpractice among secondary school students.

2. Determine the counselling strategies used to reduce examination malpractice.

3. Assess the effectiveness of guidance counselling services in curbing examination malpractice.

1.4 Research Question

The following research question will guide the study:

• What role do guidance counsellors play in reducing examination malpractice among secondary school students in Zaria Local Government Area?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between guidance counselling interventions and the reduction of examination malpractice among secondary school students in Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to guidance counsellors, school administrators, teachers, students, and educational policy makers. It will help counsellors understand effective strategies for addressing examination malpractice. School administrators may use the findings to strengthen counselling services, while policy makers may develop policies that enhance guidance and counselling programmes in secondary schools.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study will focus on public secondary schools in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State. It will specifically examine the role of guidance counsellors in reducing examination malpractice among students.
