INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Youth empowerment has become a central concern in Nigeria due to rising unemployment, poverty, social instability, and limited access to economic opportunities among young people. Nigeria has one of the largest youth populations in Africa, and harnessing the potential of this demographic group is critical for national development. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, youth unemployment and underemployment rates remain persistently high, particularly in urban centers. This situation has led to increased vulnerability to crime, substance abuse, social unrest, and economic dependency.

Youth empowerment generally refers to the process of equipping young people with the skills, knowledge, values, and opportunities necessary to participate meaningfully in economic and social activities. The United Nations Development Programme emphasizes that skill acquisition and vocational training are key strategies for promoting youth employment, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods. Skill acquisition programs provide practical competencies in areas such as tailoring, catering, ICT, hairdressing, electrical installation, carpentry, and other trades that enhance self-reliance.

In Nigeria, religious institutions, particularly churches, play a significant role in community development beyond spiritual functions. Pentecostal churches, in particular, have grown rapidly over the past decades and have expanded their activities to include social welfare programs, educational initiatives, and economic empowerment schemes. In cities such as Port Harcourt, Rivers State, churches serve as influential community centers with strong youth participation.

Selected Pentecostal churches in Port Harcourt have introduced church-based skill acquisition programs aimed at empowering unemployed and underemployed youths. These programs often include vocational training workshops, entrepreneurship seminars, mentoring schemes, and startup support initiatives. Some churches collaborate with professionals and trainers to provide hands-on instruction and sometimes offer starter packs or financial assistance upon completion.

Port Harcourt, as a major oil-producing city in Nigeria, presents a unique socio-economic context. Despite its economic significance, the city faces challenges such as youth unemployment, income inequality, and social instability. Economic fluctuations in the oil sector have contributed to job insecurity and limited formal employment opportunities. In response, faith-based organizations have increasingly taken proactive roles in addressing socio-economic challenges within their communities.

The involvement of churches in skill acquisition aligns with broader development goals promoted by institutions such as the World Bank, which recognizes the importance of partnerships with faith-based organizations in delivering social services and community development programs. Church-based empowerment initiatives may offer accessible and culturally sensitive platforms for youth development.

However, while anecdotal evidence suggests that church-based skill acquisition programs contribute positively to youth empowerment, there is limited empirical research assessing their effectiveness, structure, and measurable outcomes in Port Harcourt. Questions remain regarding the extent to which these programs improve employment prospects, entrepreneurial engagement, and socio-economic well-being among participating youths.

Therefore, it becomes necessary to systematically examine the role of church-based skill acquisition programs in promoting youth empowerment in selected Pentecostal churches in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Youth unemployment remains a persistent challenge in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Despite the presence of educational institutions and economic activities related to the oil and gas sector, many young people struggle to secure stable employment or sustainable sources of income. The lack of marketable skills and practical vocational training contributes significantly to this problem.

Government-led skill acquisition initiatives exist; however, they often face challenges such as inadequate funding, limited coverage, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and insufficient follow-up support. As a result, many youths seek alternative avenues for empowerment, including programs organized by religious institutions.

Pentecostal churches in Port Harcourt have responded by establishing skill acquisition and empowerment programs aimed at equipping youths with practical skills and entrepreneurial knowledge. Despite the apparent increase in such initiatives, there is limited empirical evidence assessing their actual impact on youth empowerment outcomes. It is unclear whether participation in these programs significantly improves employment opportunities, income levels, self-reliance, and socio-economic stability among beneficiaries.

Furthermore, challenges such as sustainability of programs, quality of training, funding limitations, and lack of structured evaluation mechanisms may affect the overall effectiveness of church-based initiatives. Without systematic assessment, stakeholders may not fully understand the strengths and weaknesses of these programs.

The absence of empirical data on the role of church-based skill acquisition programs in youth empowerment in Port Harcourt creates a knowledge gap. This gap limits the ability of policymakers, religious leaders, and development partners to design evidence-based strategies for enhancing youth empowerment initiatives.

Therefore, this study seeks to evaluate the role of church-based skill acquisition programs in youth empowerment among selected Pentecostal churches in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the role of church-based skill acquisition programs in youth empowerment in selected Pentecostal churches in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Identify the types of skill acquisition programs offered by selected Pentecostal churches in Port Harcourt.

2. Examine the level of youth participation in church-based skill acquisition programs.

3. Assess the impact of these programs on youth employment and self-reliance.

4. Identify challenges affecting the implementation and sustainability of church-based skill acquisition programs.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What types of skill acquisition programs are offered by selected Pentecostal churches in Port Harcourt?

2. What is the level of youth participation in these programs?

3. How do church-based skill acquisition programs influence youth employment and empowerment?

4. What challenges affect the effectiveness of these programs?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between participation in church-based skill acquisition programs and youth empowerment in selected Pentecostal churches in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between participation in church-based skill acquisition programs and youth empowerment in selected Pentecostal churches in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will benefit church leaders by providing insights into the effectiveness of their empowerment initiatives. It will also guide policymakers and development partners in recognizing the contributions of faith-based organizations to youth development.

The study will contribute to academic literature on youth empowerment, vocational training, and the role of religious institutions in socio-economic development. Additionally, it may encourage stronger collaboration between churches and government agencies in addressing youth unemployment challenges.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on selected Pentecostal churches in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. It examines church-based skill acquisition programs targeted at youths and evaluates their contribution to youth empowerment outcomes such as employment, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance. The study does not cover non-Pentecostal denominations or government-run skill acquisition centers.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Church-Based Skill Acquisition Programs: Vocational and entrepreneurial training initiatives organized by churches to equip members with practical skills.

Youth Empowerment: The process of equipping young people with skills, resources, and opportunities to achieve economic independence and social participation.

Pentecostal Churches: Christian denominations emphasizing charismatic worship and spiritual gifts, actively involved in community and social development activities.

Participation: Active involvement of youths in training programs offered by the church.
