Project – Effect of Economic Education on Financial Literacy Levels among Secondary School Students in Port Harcourt LGA, Rivers State

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

In the 21st century, financial literacy has become an essential life skill for individuals to make informed and responsible economic decisions. Financial literacy refers to the ability to understand and effectively use various financial skills, including personal financial management, budgeting, saving, investing, and understanding credit. In a rapidly changing global economy characterized by digital transactions, consumer credit systems, and entrepreneurial opportunities, young people must develop financial knowledge and skills early in life.

Secondary school students represent a critical segment of society that requires adequate preparation for financial independence and responsible economic participation. At this stage, students begin to make personal financial decisions related to savings, spending, and in some cases, small-scale entrepreneurial activities. Without adequate financial literacy, young people may develop poor financial habits that could negatively affect their future economic well-being.

Economic education, as offered in the secondary school curriculum, plays a significant role in promoting financial literacy. Economics provides students with foundational knowledge of concepts such as scarcity, opportunity cost, demand and supply, inflation, income, savings, investment, and market systems. These concepts form the basis for understanding personal finance and economic decision-making. Through economic education, students are expected to develop rational thinking skills and informed attitudes toward money management and resource allocation.

In Nigeria, financial literacy has become increasingly important due to rising youth unemployment, inflation, and economic uncertainty. In urban centers such as Port Harcourt within Rivers State, students are exposed to diverse financial activities, including banking services, digital payment platforms, small-scale businesses, and consumer markets. While such exposure may provide practical experience, it does not automatically guarantee sound financial knowledge or responsible financial behavior. Structured economic education in schools may therefore serve as a formal avenue for equipping students with the knowledge required to navigate financial systems effectively.

Despite the inclusion of Economics in the senior secondary school curriculum, concerns remain about the extent to which students acquire practical financial literacy skills. Examination reports from bodies such as the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council often emphasize students’ performance in theoretical economic concepts but do not necessarily measure practical financial competence. This raises questions about whether economic education is effectively translating theoretical knowledge into practical financial skills among students.

The National Policy on Education (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2013) emphasizes the development of functional education that equips learners with practical skills for self-reliance. Financial literacy aligns with this objective, as it empowers students to manage personal finances responsibly and contribute meaningfully to economic development. Educational theories such as the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991) also suggest that knowledge influences attitudes and behaviors. Therefore, students who receive comprehensive economic education may develop positive financial attitudes and responsible financial behaviors.

Given the growing complexity of financial systems and the increasing exposure of young people to financial products and services, it is necessary to assess whether economic education significantly influences financial literacy levels among secondary school students. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of economic education on financial literacy levels among secondary school students in Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Rivers State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Financial illiteracy among young people has become a growing concern in Nigeria. Many secondary school students lack adequate knowledge of budgeting, saving, investment, and responsible spending. This deficiency may lead to poor financial decisions, susceptibility to fraud, and inability to plan for future economic stability.

Although Economics is taught as a core subject in secondary schools, it is unclear whether the knowledge gained from economic education translates into practical financial literacy. In Port Harcourt, students are exposed to various financial institutions, digital banking platforms, and commercial activities. However, exposure alone does not guarantee financial competence. Without structured and effective economic education, students may remain financially uninformed despite living in economically vibrant environments.

Furthermore, the teaching of Economics in some schools may be examination-oriented, focusing primarily on theoretical concepts rather than practical financial applications. If economic education does not adequately address real-life financial issues such as personal budgeting, savings culture, credit management, and investment awareness, students may graduate without essential financial skills.

There is also limited empirical research specifically examining the relationship between economic education and financial literacy among secondary school students in Port Harcourt LGA. Most existing studies focus on tertiary institutions or adult populations, leaving a gap in understanding financial literacy development at the secondary school level.

Therefore, the problem of this study is to determine whether economic education significantly influences financial literacy levels among secondary school students in Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Rivers State.
