INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Prayer and fasting are foundational practices in Christian life, deeply rooted in biblical teachings, and have long been regarded as essential for spiritual empowerment. According to the Bible, prayer is the primary means through which believers communicate with God, express their dependence, seek guidance, and intercede for others (Ajayi, 2015). Fasting, on the other hand, is a voluntary abstinence from food, drink, or other physical indulgences, often accompanied by prayer, to draw closer to God, exercise self-discipline, and demonstrate spiritual commitment (Ogunyemi, 2017). Together, prayer and fasting are not merely religious rituals but spiritual disciplines that foster personal transformation, strengthen faith, and enable believers to fulfill God’s purposes in their lives (Okoro, 2016).

The Deeper Life Bible Church (DLBC), founded by Pastor William F. Kumuyi in 1973, is one of Nigeria’s largest Pentecostal denominations and places a strong emphasis on prayer, fasting, and holiness (Adewumi, 2018). The church organizes annual and periodic fasting programs, prayer rallies, and spiritual retreats, targeting individual and collective empowerment of believers. In Ibadan, the church has a significant following, providing a rich context for studying how structured prayer and fasting practices influence the spiritual lives and empowerment of members.

In contemporary Christian practice, believers often face spiritual, moral, and emotional challenges, including stress, temptation, and the need for divine guidance in decision-making. Prayer and fasting have been advocated as strategies for overcoming such challenges, promoting spiritual growth, and enhancing the effectiveness of Christian living (Bamidele, 2019). Despite the theological emphasis on these disciplines, there is limited empirical evidence documenting how participation in prayer and fasting programs at the Deeper Life Bible Church influences spiritual empowerment among believers in Ibadan. Investigating this relationship is essential for understanding the practical benefits of these spiritual disciplines and providing insights for pastoral ministry and spiritual formation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While prayer and fasting are widely recognized as means of spiritual empowerment, many Christian believers in Nigeria struggle with consistency, understanding, and effective engagement in these practices (Eze, 2016). In the Deeper Life Bible Church, Ibadan, structured prayer and fasting programs exist, yet anecdotal evidence suggests that not all members experience the expected spiritual growth, discipline, or empowerment.

The problem lies in the limited understanding of how prayer and fasting specifically contribute to spiritual empowerment among church members. Some members may participate in these activities as mere ritualistic observances without experiencing significant transformation or empowerment. Additionally, there is a lack of empirical research assessing the outcomes of organized prayer and fasting programs in terms of personal holiness, spiritual maturity, and resilience against life challenges (Adewale, 2017). This study seeks to fill these gaps by examining the role of prayer and fasting in promoting spiritual empowerment among believers in the Deeper Life Bible Church, Ibadan, Nigeria.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to analyze the role of prayer and fasting in spiritual empowerment among Christian believers in the Deeper Life Bible Church, Ibadan, Nigeria. Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Examine the frequency and forms of prayer and fasting practiced by members of the church.

2. Assess the influence of prayer on spiritual empowerment, including personal growth, guidance, and resilience.

3. Determine the role of fasting in enhancing spiritual discipline and self-control among church members.

4. Investigate the combined effect of prayer and fasting on overall spiritual empowerment in believers’ lives.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What are the frequency and forms of prayer and fasting practiced by members of the Deeper Life Bible Church, Ibadan?

2. How does participation in prayer activities influence the spiritual empowerment of church members?

3. What role does fasting play in promoting spiritual discipline and self-control among members?

4. How does the combination of prayer and fasting affect the overall spiritual empowerment of believers?

1.5 Hypothesis

H₀: Prayer and fasting have no significant influence on the spiritual empowerment of Christian believers in the Deeper Life Bible Church, Ibadan.

H₁: Prayer and fasting have a significant influence on the spiritual empowerment of Christian believers in the Deeper Life Bible Church, Ibadan.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons. First, it will provide pastors and church leaders with empirical evidence on the effectiveness of prayer and fasting programs, enabling them to design interventions that enhance spiritual empowerment among members. Second, it will benefit believers by highlighting the practical benefits of consistent engagement in prayer and fasting for personal spiritual growth and resilience. Third, it contributes to theological scholarship by linking biblical doctrines of prayer and fasting with measurable spiritual outcomes, providing a reference for future research in Christian spirituality and practical theology. Lastly, the study will be useful to seminaries and Christian training institutions in developing curricula that emphasize spiritual disciplines as essential components of pastoral formation and discipleship.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to members of the Deeper Life Bible Church, Ibadan, Nigeria. It focuses on the role of prayer and fasting as spiritual disciplines and their influence on personal and communal spiritual empowerment. The study does not extend to other churches, denominations, or unrelated spiritual practices, and it does not examine the historical development of prayer and fasting outside the Deeper Life Bible Church context.

1.8 Definition of Terms

1. Prayer – A spiritual practice of communicating with God through praise, confession, intercession, and supplication, aimed at seeking divine guidance, intervention, and empowerment (Ajayi, 2015).

2. Fasting – Voluntary abstinence from food, drink, or other physical indulgences for a specific period, accompanied by prayer, to achieve spiritual focus, discipline, and closeness to God (Ogunyemi, 2017).

3. Spiritual Empowerment – The process by which believers grow in faith, develop spiritual discipline, gain resilience against challenges, and experience personal transformation through engagement in spiritual practices (Okoro, 2016).

4. Christian Believers – Individuals who are members of a church and actively participate in its religious teachings, practices, and activities (Bamidele, 2019).

5. Deeper Life Bible Church (DLBC) – A Pentecostal church founded by Pastor William F. Kumuyi, with a focus on holiness, prayer, fasting, and discipleship in Nigeria and beyond (Adewumi, 2018).
