INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Stewardship and tithing are central themes in Christian theology, particularly within Pentecostalism, and are foundational to the financial sustainability and spiritual health of churches. Stewardship refers to the responsible management of all resources—spiritual, financial, and material—that God entrusts to believers, emphasizing accountability, diligence, and obedience to biblical principles (Oyedepo, 2010). Tithing, as a specific form of stewardship, involves giving one-tenth of one’s income or resources to the church as commanded in the Old and New Testaments (Malachi 3:10; Luke 11:42), serving both as an act of worship and a demonstration of faith in God’s provision. These practices are viewed as not only financial obligations but also spiritual disciplines that cultivate generosity, accountability, and communal responsibility (Nwafor, 2015).

In Nigeria, Pentecostal churches have witnessed rapid growth over the last few decades, partly due to their emphasis on financial stewardship, tithing, and prosperity theology. Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), founded by Dr. Daniel Kolawole Olukoya in 1989, has become one of the largest Pentecostal denominations in Lagos State and across Nigeria, with a strong focus on prayer, deliverance, holiness, and consistent teaching on tithing and stewardship (Adebayo, 2018). Members are encouraged to give regularly and manage their resources according to biblical principles, reinforcing the belief that faithful stewardship leads to spiritual empowerment and material blessing.

Despite the theological emphasis, issues arise regarding the practical understanding and implementation of stewardship and tithing. Some church members may struggle to give consistently due to economic pressures, lack of understanding of biblical mandates, or skepticism regarding church management of resources. Similarly, there is limited empirical evidence demonstrating how these financial and spiritual practices affect both the church’s administration and the spiritual growth of members in Nigerian Pentecostal contexts (Ojo, 2014). Investigating stewardship and tithing within MFM Lagos provides insights into how theological principles translate into practice, how they affect church growth, and how they contribute to the spiritual and material empowerment of congregants.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The sustainability and effectiveness of Pentecostal churches in Nigeria are often tied to the proper implementation of stewardship and tithing principles. While many churches, including MFM, emphasize these practices, there remain questions about the extent to which members understand and apply them faithfully (Nwafor, 2015). Some members may view tithing as merely a financial obligation rather than a spiritual discipline, which may affect their commitment to regular giving and responsible management of resources.

Moreover, church leaders face challenges in ensuring transparency, accountability, and proper management of funds. Mismanagement or perceived mismanagement of resources can undermine trust, reduce members’ commitment, and weaken the impact of stewardship teachings (Adebayo, 2018). There is also a paucity of empirical research that examines the relationship between biblical teachings on stewardship and tithing and their influence on the spiritual growth and engagement of church members in Nigerian Pentecostal churches. This study seeks to address these gaps by analyzing how the theology of stewardship and tithing in MFM, Lagos State, influences church administration, members’ spiritual life, and overall congregational development.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the theology of stewardship and tithing in Nigerian Pentecostal churches, using Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Lagos State, as a case study. Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Investigate the understanding of stewardship and tithing among members of MFM, Lagos State.

2. Examine how tithing practices influence members’ spiritual growth and commitment.

3. Determine the role of stewardship in the financial management and administration of the church.

4. Assess the challenges associated with implementing biblical stewardship and tithing principles among members.

1. What is the level of understanding of stewardship and tithing among members of MFM, Lagos State?

2. How do tithing practices influence members’ spiritual growth and commitment?

3. In what ways does stewardship contribute to the financial management and administration of the church?

4. What challenges affect the effective practice of stewardship and tithing in MFM, Lagos State?

1.5 Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between the practice of stewardship and tithing and the spiritual and administrative effectiveness of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Lagos State.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between the practice of stewardship and tithing and the spiritual and administrative effectiveness of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Lagos State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in several ways. Firstly, it provides church leaders and administrators with insights into how biblical principles of stewardship and tithing can enhance transparency, accountability, and resource management in the church. Secondly, it benefits church members by clarifying the spiritual and practical importance of tithing and responsible stewardship, promoting consistency in giving and personal spiritual growth. Thirdly, it contributes to academic knowledge in theology, particularly practical theology, by linking biblical principles to observable outcomes in church administration and congregational development. Finally, the study provides a reference for future research, particularly in examining financial and spiritual practices in Nigerian Pentecostal churches.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) branches in Lagos State, Nigeria. It examines the understanding, practice, and theological basis of stewardship and tithing among members, and their influence on spiritual empowerment and church administration. The study does not extend to other churches or denominations, nor does it explore historical or sociological aspects of tithing outside the MFM context.

1.8 Definition of Terms

1. Stewardship – The responsible management and use of resources, talents, and opportunities that God has entrusted to individuals, guided by biblical principles (Oyedepo, 2010).

2. Tithing – The act of giving one-tenth of income or resources to the church as a biblical obligation and spiritual discipline (Malachi 3:10).

3. Spiritual Empowerment – The process of equipping believers with faith, confidence, and spiritual maturity to fulfill God’s purposes (Nwafor, 2015).

4. Pentecostal Churches – Christian denominations emphasizing the work of the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, holiness, and active engagement in prayer, worship, and evangelism (Ojo, 2014).

5. Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) – A Pentecostal church in Nigeria, founded by Dr. Daniel Kolawole Olukoya, focusing on prayer, deliverance, and spiritual empowerment (Adebayo, 2018).
