CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Divorce is a complex and sensitive issue in both the social and religious spheres. In the Christian faith, marriage is considered a sacred covenant ordained by God, designed to reflect the unity between Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:25–33). This covenantal understanding positions marriage as a lifelong commitment, and divorce is generally regarded as a disruption of God’s intended plan for the family. However, the reality of marital breakdown among Christians has challenged churches to grapple with theological interpretations, pastoral guidance, and moral implications surrounding divorce (Amadi, 2019).

Theologically, different Christian traditions interpret divorce in various ways. The Catholic Church, for instance, teaches that marriage is indissoluble, allowing annulments under strict conditions, whereas most Protestant denominations recognize divorce in cases of marital unfaithfulness or abandonment (Malina & Rohrbaugh, 2003). Pentecostal and Charismatic churches, which have grown rapidly in Nigeria, often combine strict biblical interpretation with pragmatic pastoral counseling to address marital challenges, yet still emphasize reconciliation and forgiveness (Adebayo, 2020).

In contemporary Nigeria, divorce is increasingly prevalent among Christians, influenced by factors such as economic pressure, cultural shifts, poor communication, infidelity, and domestic violence (Okeke, 2018). These social realities have created tension between the idealized theological understanding of marriage and the lived experiences of Christian couples. Consequently, there is a need to examine the theology of divorce not only as a doctrinal concept but also as it intersects with real-life marital practices and pastoral responses.

Understanding the theology of divorce is crucial for several reasons. First, it guides the church’s pastoral care approach, shaping counseling practices, support structures, and intervention strategies for couples experiencing marital difficulties. Second, theological clarity helps believers reconcile personal experiences with biblical teachings, reducing confusion, guilt, and spiritual distress associated with divorce (Eze, 2021). Third, it informs broader social discourse by providing faith-based perspectives on marriage, family, and moral responsibility.

Despite the significance of divorce as a theological and pastoral concern, there is limited empirical research on how Christians in Nigeria understand and respond to divorce within a theological framework. Most studies tend to focus on sociological, psychological, or legal aspects of divorce, leaving the theological discourse underexplored. This gap underscores the importance of studying the theology of divorce among Christians, particularly in contexts like Nigeria, where religion deeply influences moral, social, and personal decisions (Ogunleye, 2019).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Divorce remains a contentious issue among Christians, provoking debate within churches, families, and communities. The problem is twofold: first, there is a growing incidence of divorce among Christians despite doctrinal teachings that marriage is a lifelong covenant; second, there is ambiguity and diversity in theological interpretations of divorce, which affects how the church responds to divorced individuals.

Many Christian believers experience confusion and spiritual distress when confronted with marital breakdown. While the Bible provides guidance on divorce, interpretations vary, and some believers feel condemned or marginalized by their faith communities (Amadi, 2019). Moreover, pastoral responses to divorce are inconsistent across denominations, ranging from strict prohibitions and counseling to more permissive approaches that emphasize personal circumstances (Adebayo, 2020).

This inconsistency can result in divorced Christians struggling to reconcile their experiences with their faith, potentially affecting their spiritual well-being, church participation, and social relationships. In Nigeria, limited scholarly attention has been given to the theology of divorce from a context-specific perspective, leaving church leaders with insufficient empirical insights to provide effective pastoral guidance (Eze, 2021).

Therefore, the study seeks to investigate the theology of divorce among Christians, exploring how doctrinal interpretations influence personal attitudes, pastoral care, and communal responses. By doing so, it aims to provide theological clarity, inform pastoral strategies, and support believers in navigating the complexities of divorce without spiritual alienation or social stigma.

1.3 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the theological understanding of divorce among Christians in Nigeria?

2. How do Christians reconcile their personal experiences of divorce with biblical teachings?

3. What are the pastoral approaches to addressing divorce within different Christian denominations?

4. How does the theology of divorce influence church participation and spiritual life among divorced believers?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to examine the theology of divorce among Christians. Specific objectives include:

1. To explore the biblical and doctrinal perspectives on divorce.

2. To investigate how Christians understand and interpret divorce within their faith.

3. To examine the pastoral care approaches adopted by churches for divorced individuals.

4. To assess the impact of theological understanding of divorce on believers’ spiritual life and church engagement.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The study is significant in several ways:

• Theological Clarity: It provides insight into biblical and doctrinal teachings on divorce, helping believers and church leaders navigate the issue with informed understanding.

• Pastoral Guidance: The findings can assist pastors, counselors, and church leaders in developing effective strategies for supporting divorced Christians.

• Spiritual Support: By clarifying theological interpretations, the study can help divorced believers reconcile their experiences with their faith, reducing feelings of guilt, shame, or alienation.

• Academic Contribution: The research fills a gap in the theological study of divorce within the Nigerian Christian context, providing a foundation for further scholarly inquiry.

1.6 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on Christian believers in Nigeria, examining the theology of divorce across selected denominations, including Pentecostal, Anglican, and Catholic churches. The research explores doctrinal teachings, pastoral approaches, and personal interpretations of divorce, as well as the impact of these theological perspectives on believers’ spiritual life and church participation. The study does not cover legal, sociological, or economic aspects of divorce except where these intersect with theological interpretation.

1.7 Definition of Terms

Divorce: The legal or formal dissolution of marriage, which may conflict with religious teachings on the sanctity of marriage (Okeke, 2018).

Theology: The study of God, religious beliefs, and doctrines, including how faith traditions interpret issues such as marriage and divorce (Amadi, 2019).

Christian Believers: Individuals who identify with Christianity, adhere to its doctrines, and practice its teachings in daily life.

Pastoral Care: Guidance, counseling, and support provided by church leaders to members experiencing personal or spiritual challenges (Eze, 2021).

Marital Covenant: The sacred and binding agreement between a husband and wife, viewed in Christian theology as ordained by God (Malina & Rohrbaugh, 2003).

Church Participation: Active involvement in church activities, including worship, fellowship, ministries, and counseling programs (Ogunleye, 2019).
