INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
In the contemporary era, technology has become a central pillar in education, reshaping learning environments and redefining pedagogical approaches worldwide. Digital tools such as computers, tablets, internet-enabled platforms, and educational software facilitate interactive learning, personalized instruction, and access to global resources. For early childhood education (ECE), technology holds promise for enhancing cognitive, social, and emotional development by supporting creative play, early literacy, numeracy skills, and teacher-child interaction through multimedia and interactive educational content (Inuwa & Muhammad, 2025).
However, the digital divide—the gap between individuals and communities with adequate access to digital technologies and those without—poses significant challenges in harnessing these benefits, particularly in developing economies like Nigeria. The digital divide refers not only to disparities in access to devices and internet connectivity but also to inequalities in digital literacy, infrastructure, affordability, and educational policy readiness (Atakpo, 2024).
In Nigeria, ongoing efforts to modernize education through digital inclusion initiatives have met with mixed results. Despite Lagos being the nation’s economic hub with relatively better internet coverage, disparities still exist among socio-economic groups, affecting the quality and equity of early learning experiences (UNICEF, 2025). Montessori schools, which are recognized for their child-centered pedagogies and innovative learning environments, are increasingly incorporating digital tools into teaching. Yet, not all preschools have equal access to technology, and challenges such as device scarcity, inconsistent electricity, limited teacher training, and high data costs can undermine curricular effectiveness (Inuwa & Muhammad, 2025).
These inequalities can create distinct learning outcomes even within the same urban setting, influencing children’s readiness for primary education and long-term academic success. Understanding how digital disparities affect teaching practices and children’s learning within Montessori settings in Ajah—an urban district with diverse populations—is vital to formulating targeted strategies that can address these gaps, promote educational equity, and support Nigeria’s broader digitization goals (Atakpo, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Education in the digital age increasingly relies on access to technology, digital resources, and internet connectivity to deliver quality learning experiences. Yet, in Lagos State, disparities in access to digital technologies continue to undermine learning opportunities, even in urban preschools. Although some children in private Montessori schools benefit from digital tools and online resources, others face limited access due to socio-economic factors affecting parents, school resources, and infrastructural support (UNICEF, 2025).
These disparities are most pronounced in early childhood settings, where digital integration is still evolving and largely dependent on individual school capacity. A lack of reliable internet, inadequate devices, limited teacher preparedness for tech-based instruction, and high costs of digital infrastructure affect how digital tools are used in classrooms. The uneven distribution of technological resources and skills among schools in Ajah may adversely impact children’s early learning, engagement levels, digital literacy acquisition, and preparedness for primary school education (Inuwa & Muhammad, 2025).
Moreover, existing literature on digital divide issues in Nigeria predominantly centres on basic and secondary education or urban-rural disparities, with limited empirical attention given to early childhood settings in urban Nigerian contexts. There is a pressing need to investigate how digital disparities manifest within private preschool environments like Montessori schools in Ajah and explore the implications for teaching practices and learner outcomes. Failure to address this gap may result in entrenched inequalities that disadvantage children in early education stages, impacting cognitive and social development, digital readiness, and future academic success (Atakpo, 2024; UNICEF, 2025).

1.4 Research Objectives
General Objective
To examine the impact of the digital divide on early childhood education in Lagos by studying its effects in five selected Montessori schools in Ajah, Lagos.
Specific Objectives

1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: There is no significant relationship between access to digital technologies and the quality of early childhood education outcomes in the selected Montessori schools in Ajah, Lagos.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will provide insights for educational policymakers, school administrators, curriculum developers, and teacher educators on the extent to which digital disparities influence foundational learning. It will highlight areas where structural improvements—such as investment in technology infrastructure, teacher training, and inclusive digital pedagogy—are most needed. For parents and local stakeholders, the study will illuminate the role of digital access in early learning and the importance of equitable resources for all children. Additionally, the research will contribute to academic literature on digital inclusion in early childhood education in urban African contexts, offering empirical evidence for future policy formulation and intervention design (Inuwa & Muhammad, 2025; Atakpo, 2024; UNICEF, 2025).
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study is geographically limited to five selected Montessori preschools in Ajah, Lagos, Nigeria, focusing on their digital access conditions, teaching practices, and children’s learning experiences. The research primarily examines the technological, instructional, and learning aspects influenced by digital disparities within early childhood education environments. Temporally, the study will consider current technological realities and recent changes in digital integration post-COVID-19.
1.8 Definition of Terms

Digital Divide: The digital divide refers to the gap between individuals, households, or institutions with access to modern information and communication technologies (ICTs) and those without.
