INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Christology, the theological study of the person and work of Jesus Christ, is central to Christian doctrine and faith. It addresses fundamental questions concerning the identity of Jesus Christ as both divine and human, as well as His redemptive mission for humanity. Classical Christian theology affirms that Jesus Christ is the incarnate Son of God whose life, death, and resurrection provide salvation from sin (John 1:1–14; Philippians 2:5–11). This understanding has historically formed the foundation of Christian belief across denominations.

In contemporary Christianity, however, the understanding of Christ has been shaped by emerging theological movements, particularly within Pentecostalism. One of the most influential of these movements is the prosperity gospel, which emphasizes material wealth, financial success, and physical health as evidence of divine favor. The prosperity gospel teaches that faith, positive confession, and financial giving—often referred to as “sowing seeds”—can result in divine blessings, including wealth and success (Temitope, 2019).

The spread of prosperity theology in Nigeria is closely linked to the rapid growth of Pentecostal churches since the late twentieth century. Nigerian Pentecostalism has experienced significant expansion, with churches attracting large congregations through messages of hope, miracles, and breakthrough (Asuquo, 2020). This growth is partly driven by socio-economic challenges such as poverty, unemployment, and inequality, which make prosperity teachings particularly appealing to many believers seeking improved living conditions.

Within this context, the person and work of Christ are often presented in ways that align with the expectations of prosperity theology. Jesus is not only portrayed as the Savior who redeems humanity from sin but also as a divine provider who grants financial blessings and material success. According to Utensati, Nuhu, and Josephine (2022), this shift in emphasis reflects a reinterpretation of Christ’s mission to meet the immediate needs of believers in a challenging socio-economic environment.

Furthermore, prosperity teachings frequently rely on selective interpretation of biblical texts to support claims about wealth and success. Scriptural passages are often presented in ways that emphasize material blessings while downplaying themes of suffering, sacrifice, and spiritual transformation (Temitope, 2019). This raises important theological questions about whether such interpretations remain faithful to biblical Christology.

Scholars have also noted that the prosperity gospel has contributed to both positive and negative outcomes in Nigerian society. On one hand, it has inspired hope, encouraged entrepreneurship, and supported social development initiatives. On the other hand, it has been associated with materialism, excessive focus on wealth, and, in some cases, ethical concerns within religious leadership (Nwokocha, 2022).

In addition, Smith (2021) observes that the prosperity gospel in Nigeria presents a paradox: while it often critiques societal corruption and inequality, it can simultaneously reinforce similar patterns within church structures through the accumulation of wealth by religious leaders. This contradiction further complicates the theological understanding of Christ as presented within prosperity-oriented teachings.

Given these developments, it becomes necessary to critically examine the Christological implications of the prosperity gospel in Nigerian Pentecostal churches. Specifically, there is a need to evaluate whether the portrayal of Jesus Christ in these contexts aligns with the biblical understanding of His person and work or represents a significant theological shift.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The rise of the prosperity gospel in Nigerian Pentecostal churches has significantly influenced Christian teaching and practice. While this movement has contributed to church growth and provided hope to many believers, it has also raised serious theological concerns, particularly regarding the understanding of Jesus Christ.

One of the major problems is the apparent shift in emphasis from Christ as the Savior who redeems humanity from sin to Christ as a provider of material wealth and physical well-being. In many churches, sermons increasingly focus on financial breakthrough, success, and miracles, often overshadowing the core message of salvation and repentance. This shift calls into question whether the person and work of Christ are being accurately represented within prosperity teachings.

Another critical issue is the selective and sometimes distorted interpretation of biblical texts used to support prosperity doctrines. According to Temitope (2019), prosperity preachers often emphasize scriptural passages that promise blessings while neglecting those that highlight suffering, sacrifice, and self-denial. This imbalance may lead to a misrepresentation of Christ’s mission and teachings.

Furthermore, the prosperity gospel has been linked to growing materialism among believers. Many adherents equate spiritual success with financial prosperity, leading to unrealistic expectations and potential disillusionment when such expectations are not met (Utensati et al., 2022). This situation raises concerns about the spiritual well-being of believers and their understanding of the true nature of Christian faith.

In addition, Nwokocha (2022) argues that the emphasis on wealth and success has contributed to ethical challenges within some churches, including exploitative practices and undue pressure on members to give financially. Such practices may distort the image of Christ and undermine the integrity of Christian teaching.

Moreover, the paradox identified by Smith (2021)—where prosperity teachings criticize societal corruption while simultaneously reflecting similar patterns within church structures—further complicates the issue. This contradiction raises questions about the authenticity and theological consistency of prosperity-oriented Christology.

Despite these concerns, there is limited research that specifically examines how the prosperity gospel shapes the understanding of the person and work of Christ in Nigerian Pentecostal churches. Most existing studies focus on its socio-economic or ethical implications rather than its Christological impact.

Therefore, this study seeks to address this gap by critically evaluating the influence of prosperity gospel teachings on Christology in selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. It aims to determine whether these teachings align with biblical doctrine or represent a departure from it.

1.3 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. How is the person of Jesus Christ presented in selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria?

2. How do prosperity teachings influence the understanding of the work of Christ?

3. To what extent do prosperity teachings align with biblical Christology?

4. What are the implications of prosperity gospel teachings on believers’ perception of Christ?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the Christological implications of the prosperity gospel in Nigerian Pentecostal churches.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the presentation of the person of Jesus Christ in selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria.

2. Analyze how prosperity teachings shape the understanding of the work of Christ.

3. Evaluate the consistency of prosperity gospel teachings with biblical Christology.

4. Assess the impact of prosperity teachings on believers’ perception of Christ.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀ (Null Hypothesis):
The prosperity gospel has no significant influence on the understanding of the person and work of Christ in selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in several respects. Theologically, it contributes to scholarly discussions on Christology by examining how modern teachings influence the understanding of Jesus Christ. It provides a critical framework for evaluating contemporary interpretations of Christ within Pentecostal contexts.

Academically, the study fills an important gap in existing literature by focusing specifically on the Christological implications of the prosperity gospel, rather than its socio-economic aspects alone.

Practically, the findings will be valuable to church leaders, theologians, and believers by offering insights that can promote balanced and biblically grounded teachings about Christ.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. It examines how prosperity gospel teachings influence the understanding of the person and work of Christ. The study is limited to Christological analysis and does not cover all aspects of Pentecostal theology.
