INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Love and unity are central themes in Christian theology, underpinning the teachings of Jesus Christ and the ethical framework of the Bible. The Scriptures emphasize love as a defining mark of discipleship: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (John 13:34, ESV). Unity, similarly, is highlighted as a vital component of the body of Christ, with believers called to maintain harmony and mutual support (Ephesians 4:3). These principles are not only spiritual ideals but also practical guides for social cohesion, conflict resolution, and communal well-being within Christian communities.

Exegesis, the critical interpretation and explanation of biblical texts, provides a systematic approach to understanding how love and unity are articulated and operationalized in Scripture. Through exegesis, scholars and practitioners can explore the theological, historical, and literary contexts of biblical passages, uncovering their relevance for contemporary Christian life (Carson, 2019). By analyzing passages from both the Old and New Testaments, one can discern the ethical imperatives, relational dynamics, and spiritual responsibilities that inform love and unity within the church.

Despite the biblical emphasis on these principles, modern Christian communities often face challenges in practicing genuine love and unity. Issues such as denominational differences, interpersonal conflicts, cultural misunderstandings, and social inequalities sometimes hinder the full realization of these biblical ideals (Anderson, 2020). Moreover, while love and unity are frequently preached, there is a lack of systematic application in guiding church members on how to embody these virtues in daily life, family relations, and community interactions.

Given the increasing social and spiritual complexities in contemporary Christian communities, understanding the biblical foundations of love and unity is critical. Exegesis not only provides clarity on the intended meaning of Scripture but also offers practical insights for fostering harmonious relationships, resolving conflicts, and strengthening the collective spiritual life of believers (Wright, 2018). This study, therefore, seeks to examine the exegesis of love and unity based on biblical principles, with a focus on its relevance and application in contemporary Christian contexts.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While love and unity are central tenets of Christianity, their practical application within church communities is often inconsistent. Many churches report conflicts among members, denominational divisions, and challenges in fostering harmonious relationships, suggesting a disconnect between biblical teachings and lived experiences (Okoro, 2021). The absence of in-depth understanding of Scripture on these issues may contribute to this gap, as church members may interpret love and unity superficially without grasping the full theological and ethical implications.

Furthermore, the lack of systematic teaching and application of love and unity principles can result in weakened community cohesion, diminished church growth, and strained interpersonal relationships. This raises critical questions about how biblical exegesis can guide Christians in embodying love and unity effectively. Without a thorough exegetical approach, the transformative potential of these virtues may remain unrealized, leaving congregations vulnerable to conflicts and spiritual disunity.

Therefore, the problem this study seeks to address is the gap between the biblical ideals of love and unity and their actual practice in Christian communities. By examining these principles through rigorous exegesis, the study aims to provide a framework that enhances understanding, encourages practical implementation, and strengthens the moral and spiritual fabric of contemporary churches.

1.3 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What do biblical texts reveal about the principles of love and unity?
2. How have love and unity been interpreted in historical and contemporary Christian contexts?
3. What are the challenges to practicing love and unity within Christian communities today?
4. How can the exegesis of biblical texts guide the practical application of love and unity in churches?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The objectives of this study are:

1. To examine biblical texts to determine the principles of love and unity.
2. To analyze historical and contemporary interpretations of love and unity in Christianity.
3. To identify challenges hindering the practice of love and unity in modern Christian communities.
4. To recommend practical strategies for applying biblical teachings on love and unity in church life.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: Exegesis of biblical principles of love and unity has no significant impact on fostering harmonious relationships within Christian communities.

H₁: Exegesis of biblical principles of love and unity significantly impacts the promotion of harmonious relationships within Christian communities.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is significant in several ways:

1. Theological Scholars: Provides an exegetical framework that deepens understanding of core biblical principles.
2. Church Leaders: Offers practical insights for guiding congregants in practicing love and unity, promoting cohesive and harmonious communities.
3. Christian Communities: Encourages members to embody biblical teachings, improving interpersonal relationships and collective spiritual growth.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the exegesis of biblical passages related to love and unity, primarily from the New Testament (e.g., John 13:34–35; 1 Corinthians 13; Ephesians 4:1–6) and selected Old Testament texts emphasizing communal harmony. The research targets Christian leaders, members, and scholars in Abuja, examining how the principles of love and unity are interpreted, taught, and applied in contemporary church settings.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Exegesis: Critical interpretation and explanation of biblical texts to uncover their meaning in historical, literary, and theological contexts (Carson, 2019).

Love: In a biblical sense, love refers to selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional care for God and fellow humans, reflecting God’s character (1 John 4:7–8).

Unity: The state of being united in faith, purpose, and practice within the Christian community, promoting harmony and collective spiritual growth (Ephesians 4:3).

Christian Communities: Groups of believers who share faith in Jesus Christ and are guided by biblical teachings in their personal, social, and spiritual lives.

Harmony: Peaceful and cooperative relationships among individuals or groups within the church, marked by mutual respect and shared values.
