INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study

Proper sanitation practices—such as safe disposal of human waste, access to clean water, hygienic food handling, and waste management—play a pivotal role in preventing waterborne diseases. Waterborne diseases, including cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery, and diarrhea, are caused by pathogenic microorganisms transmitted through contaminated water sources. Globally, waterborne diseases account for significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where access to safe water and sanitation facilities is limited (WHO, 2022).
In Nigeria, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene practices contribute substantially to the prevalence of waterborne diseases. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS, 2021), an estimated 65 million Nigerians lack access to improved sanitation facilities, and over 100 million people use unimproved water sources. These conditions expose communities to bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections that are preventable through proper sanitation and hygiene interventions. Studies indicate that poor sanitation accounts for a considerable proportion of child morbidity and mortality, with diarrheal diseases being one of the leading causes of death among children under five years (UNICEF, 2021).

Rapid urbanization and population density have also overwhelmed the capacity of municipal sanitation systems, leading to poor environmental hygiene.
Furthermore, cultural beliefs, low literacy levels, and lack of community engagement hinder the adoption of good sanitation practices. Even where public health campaigns are implemented, their effectiveness is often limited due to inconsistent messaging, insufficient community participation, and inadequate follow-up.
Health facility data from Ilorin East LGA indicate that outbreaks of waterborne diseases are recurrent, particularly during the rainy season, yet little empirical research has explored the direct relationship between household sanitation practices and disease prevalence in the area. Without a clear understanding of this relationship, policymakers, health practitioners, and local authorities face challenges in designing targeted interventions to improve sanitation and reduce disease burden.
Therefore, this study seeks to assess sanitation practices and examine their impact on the prevalence of waterborne diseases in Ilorin East LGA. The findings will provide evidence-based insights to guide community-level health education, infrastructure improvements, and public health policy aimed at mitigating waterborne disease risks.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The general objective of this study is to assess the relationship between sanitation practices and the prevalence of waterborne diseases in Ilorin East LGA.
The specific objectives are to:
