INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Conflict is an inevitable aspect of human relationships, including within the Christian church. From the earliest days of the Christian community, disagreements, misunderstandings, and disputes have arisen among believers. The New Testament provides several examples of such conflicts, including the disagreement between Paul and Barnabas (Acts 15:36–41) and the tensions within the Corinthian church (1 Corinthians 1:10–13). These instances highlight that conflict is not a modern phenomenon but one that has persisted throughout church history.

In contemporary times, churches continue to experience various forms of conflict, ranging from interpersonal disagreements among members to doctrinal disputes, leadership struggles, and administrative tensions. These conflicts, when not properly managed, can lead to division, spiritual stagnation, loss of membership, and even church splits. In many cases, conflicts within the church are handled using secular approaches or are ignored altogether, rather than being addressed through biblical principles. This often results in unresolved issues that undermine the unity and witness of the church.

The Bible, however, provides clear guidance on how conflicts should be addressed among believers. One of the most significant passages on conflict resolution is found in Matthew 18:15–17. In this passage, Jesus outlines a step-by-step process for addressing offenses between members of the Christian community. The process includes private confrontation, involving witnesses, and, if necessary, bringing the matter before the church. Without a strong biblical foundation for addressing these issues, churches risk losing their spiritual effectiveness and credibility. Therefore, this study seeks to explore biblical approaches to conflict resolution through an exegetical analysis of Matthew 18:15–17, with the aim of providing practical and theological insights for the contemporary church.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Conflict within the church has become a significant concern in modern Christianity. Despite the church being a spiritual community grounded in love, unity, and fellowship, many congregations experience persistent conflicts that often lead to division, hostility, and fragmentation. These conflicts manifest in various forms, including interpersonal disputes among members, leadership struggles, doctrinal disagreements, and administrative conflicts.

One major problem is that many churches lack a clear understanding and application of biblical principles for conflict resolution. Instead of following scriptural guidelines, conflicts are often handled through emotional reactions, favoritism, avoidance, or even secular methods that do not align with Christian teachings. In some cases, church leaders may suppress conflicts to maintain outward peace, which only allows unresolved issues to grow and resurface later in more destructive ways.

Another critical issue is the misinterpretation or neglect of key biblical passages that address conflict resolution, particularly Matthew 18:15–17. While this passage provides a structured approach for addressing offenses within the church, it is often either misunderstood or selectively applied. Some churches may emphasize discipline without restoration, while others may avoid confrontation altogether, leading to a lack of accountability. Additionally, unresolved conflicts in the church can have serious spiritual and social consequences. This not only affects individual believers but also undermines the mission of the church as the body of Christ.

Furthermore, there is a gap between biblical teachings on conflict resolution and their practical application in many churches today. While the Bible provides clear instructions, many church leaders and members lack the necessary training, understanding, or willingness to implement these principles effectively. This gap highlights the need for a deeper theological and exegetical study of relevant biblical texts to bridge theory and practice.

Therefore, the problem this study seeks to address is the inadequate understanding and application of biblical approaches to conflict resolution within the church, particularly as outlined in Matthew 18:15–17. By examining this passage exegetically, this study aims to provide a clearer interpretation and practical framework for resolving conflicts in a manner that promotes reconciliation, unity, and spiritual growth within the Christian community.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives are to:
