INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Death is one of the most universal and inevitable realities of human existence, yet it remains one of the most deeply feared and misunderstood experiences across cultures and religions. Within Christianity, death is not viewed merely as the cessation of life but as a transition with profound spiritual implications. The Christian perspective on death is inseparably linked to the doctrines of resurrection, eternal life, and the hope of reunion with Christ. These beliefs significantly shape how Christians respond to death, grieve the loss of loved ones, and conduct burial practices.

A central biblical passage that addresses Christian attitudes toward death and bereavement is 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18. In this text, the Apostle Paul provides theological instruction to the Thessalonian church concerning those who have died in Christ. He encourages believers not to grieve “as others who have no hope,” emphasizing the certainty of resurrection and the second coming of Christ. This passage introduces the concept of “resurrection hope,” which serves as a cornerstone of Christian eschatology and pastoral care.

The early Christian community, to which Paul wrote, was experiencing confusion and anxiety regarding the fate of deceased believers. 1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the clear teachings of Scripture on death and resurrection, many Christians struggle to maintain a balanced and biblically grounded perspective on death and burial practices. While passages such as 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 provide assurance and hope, the lived experiences of many believers often reflect fear, confusion, and inconsistency in applying these teachings. This gap between theological doctrine and practical expression constitutes a significant problem within contemporary Christianity.

In many contexts, including Nigeria, burial practices among Christians are heavily influenced by cultural traditions, some of which may conflict with biblical principles. Extravagant funeral ceremonies, prolonged mourning rituals, and practices rooted in ancestral beliefs sometimes overshadow the core Christian message of resurrection hope. As a result, the focus of burial ceremonies may shift from celebrating the hope of eternal life to fulfilling social or cultural expectations. This raises concerns about the authenticity and theological integrity of Christian burial practices.

Additionally, there is a widespread misunderstanding of the concept of resurrection among many believers. Some Christians interpret resurrection hope in vague or abstract terms, while others lack a clear understanding of its implications for life after death. This inadequate theological foundation can lead to excessive grief, despair, or even syncretism, where Christian beliefs are blended with non-Christian practices.

Another critical issue is the emotional and pastoral challenge associated with death. While Scripture encourages believers not to grieve without hope, it does not eliminate the reality of sorrow. However, many Christians either suppress grief in an attempt to appear “faithful” or become overwhelmed by it due to a lack of understanding of biblical hope. Moreover, the increasing influence of secular ideologies has contributed to a diminished emphasis on eternal life and resurrection. This shift can weaken the relevance of biblical teachings and reduce the transformative power of Christian hope in the face of mortality.

While many studies focus on eschatology or cultural anthropology, fewer works integrate these perspectives to provide a comprehensive understanding of how biblical teachings should shape Christian responses to death in real-life contexts.

Therefore, the problem this study addresses is the inconsistency and inadequacy in the understanding and application of Christian teachings on death, resurrection, and burial practices. By undertaking a theological analysis of 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18, this study seeks to clarify the concept of resurrection hope and examine its implications for Christian living and burial practices. It aims to provide a framework that aligns biblical doctrine with contemporary practice, thereby helping believers approach death with informed faith, balanced grief, and enduring hope.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine Christian perspectives on death and burial practices through a theological analysis of 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Analyze the teachings of 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 concerning death and resurrection.
2. Examine the concept of resurrection hope in Christian theology.

Death: The cessation of physical life, understood in Christianity as a transition to a spiritual state awaiting resurrection.
