INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Vaccination campaigns have long been recognized as one of the most impactful public health interventions in reducing the incidence and severity of preventable diseases worldwide (Andre et al., 2008). The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that immunization prevents 2–3 million deaths annually from diseases such as measles, diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (WHO, 2020). In low‑ and middle‑income countries like Nigeria, vaccination campaigns are critical components of national strategies to control and eliminate vaccine‑preventable diseases (Akinsola et al., 2016).

Kabba, a semi‑urban community in Kogi State, has experienced periodic outbreaks of preventable diseases such as measles, meningitis, and polio in past decades. These outbreaks have placed significant burdens on families, health facilities, and community resources. In response, local health authorities, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health and international partners, have implemented routine vaccination drives, supplementary immunization activities (SIAs), and community‑based awareness campaigns aimed at increasing immunization coverage and reducing morbidity and mortality from vaccine‑preventable diseases (Onwujekwe et al., 2019).

Despite these efforts, challenges remain. Vaccine hesitancy fueled by myths, limited access to health facilities, cold chain disruptions, and gaps in community engagement continue to undermine campaign effectiveness (Ejeh et al., 2019). These constraints are compounded in communities like Kabba, where socio‑economic disparities and health literacy levels vary widely. Therefore, assessing the impact of vaccination campaigns on preventable diseases in Kabba is essential in understanding whether the strategies implemented are translating into measurable health outcomes and what gaps still exist.

Vaccination campaigns not only aim to increase coverage but also to strengthen community resilience against outbreaks. Studies have shown that high immunization coverage significantly reduces disease incidence, hospital admissions, and health‑related expenses across communities (Ozawa, Clark, Portnoy, Grewal, & Brenzel, 2016). Given this backdrop, it becomes imperative to examine how vaccination campaigns in Kabba community influence the patterns of preventable diseases and how community members perceive such interventions.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite sustained vaccination campaigns across Nigeria, preventable diseases continue to pose a public health challenge in many communities including Kabba. Health records from local clinics and health centers indicate that outbreaks of measles, pertussis, and neonatal tetanus have occurred sporadically in recent years, suggesting gaps in immunization coverage (Abubakar, 2021). Moreover, anecdotal reports from community health workers reveal that some residents are still uninformed about the importance of vaccines or harbor misconceptions about vaccine safety.

Vaccination campaigns are costly and resource‑intensive, requiring substantial investments in logistics, personnel, and community mobilization. However, if these campaigns do not achieve the desired reduction in disease incidence, it raises concerns about their efficiency, coverage, and acceptance within the community. While national immunization data provide broad trends, localized assessments in Kabba are limited. There is insufficient empirical evidence on how far vaccination campaigns have impacted preventable diseases in Kabba, whether immunization coverage is equitable across different demographic groups, and what factors moderate the outcome of these campaigns.

Without a clear understanding of the strengths and limitations of existing vaccination efforts in Kabba, policymakers and healthcare providers may continue to allocate resources without addressing underlying barriers. This research seeks to fill that gap by systematically evaluating the impact of vaccination campaigns on the prevalence of preventable diseases in the community and identifying determinants that influence campaign success.

1.3 Research Objectives

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of vaccination campaigns on preventable diseases in Kabba community.

The specific objectives include:

1. To assess immunization coverage achieved through vaccination campaigns in Kabba community.
2. To examine the relationship between vaccination campaigns and the incidence of preventable diseases in the community.
3. To identify key factors that influence the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns in Kabba.
4. To explore community perceptions and attitudes toward vaccination campaigns.

1.4 Research Question

This study will be guided by the following research questions:

1. What is the level of immunization coverage in Kabba community following vaccination campaigns?
2. How are vaccination campaigns related to the incidence of preventable diseases in the community?
3. What are the key factors influencing the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns in Kabba?
4. What are community perceptions and attitudes toward vaccination campaigns?

1.5 Hypothesis of the Study

H₀: There is no statistically significant relationship between vaccination campaigns and the reduction in incidence of preventable diseases in Kabba community.

H₁: There is a statistically significant relationship between vaccination campaigns and the reduction in incidence of preventable diseases in Kabba community.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to public health policy by providing localized evidence on the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns in Kabba community. It will offer insights for healthcare planners, government agencies, and non‑governmental organizations to tailor strategies that enhance immunization uptake and disease prevention. Furthermore, it will benefit researchers and academics interested in immunization program evaluation and community health initiatives.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on vaccination campaigns implemented in Kabba community over the past five years and their impact on selected vaccine‑preventable diseases such as measles, tetanus, and pertussis. It includes data collected from health facilities, community members, and stakeholders involved in immunization activities.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Vaccination Campaigns: Organized efforts by health authorities to administer vaccines to large population groups within a short period.
• Preventable Diseases: Diseases for which effective preventive vaccines exist.
• Immunization Coverage: The proportion of individuals in the target population who have received recommended vaccines.
• Vaccine Hesitancy: Delay in acceptance or refusal of vaccines despite availability of vaccination services.
