INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The relationship between faith and medicine has remained a critical subject in both health sciences and religious studies, particularly in developing societies such as Nigeria where religion plays a central role in everyday life. In many African societies, including Nigeria, health and illness are not viewed solely from a biomedical perspective but are also interpreted through spiritual, cultural, and religious lenses. This has given rise to what scholars describe as medical pluralism, where individuals simultaneously or alternatively utilize both spiritual and biomedical healthcare systems.

Faith healing, defined as the process of treating illness through spiritual means such as prayer, laying on of hands, anointing oil, and prophetic declarations, is deeply rooted in the Christian tradition, particularly within Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. Historically, faith healing dates back to ancient times and continues to thrive in contemporary societies, especially in sub-Saharan Africa where spiritual explanations of illness remain prevalent.

Pentecostalism, one of the fastest-growing forms of Christianity globally, places significant emphasis on divine healing as a core doctrine. Healing is not only viewed as a physical restoration but also as a holistic transformation encompassing spiritual, emotional, and psychological well-being. In Pentecostal theology, sickness is often interpreted as a manifestation of spiritual imbalance, sin, or demonic influence, and thus requires spiritual intervention through faith.

In Nigeria, Pentecostal churches have become highly influential institutions, shaping not only the spiritual lives of their members but also their social behaviors, including health-seeking practices. These churches provide a wide range of healing services, including prayer sessions, healing crusades, deliverance programs, and counseling. Consequently, many adherents develop strong confidence in divine healing, sometimes prioritizing it over conventional medical treatment.

However, the reliance on faith healing does not necessarily exclude the use of modern medicine. Instead, many individuals navigate between both systems depending on factors such as the perceived cause of illness, severity of symptoms, financial capacity, and level of religious commitment. Studies have shown that individuals often seek faith healing due to dissatisfaction with hospital services, high cost of medical care, or belief in supernatural causation of illness.

Furthermore, religion has been found to have both positive and negative implications for health outcomes. On one hand, religious participation can promote healthy behaviors, provide emotional support, and enhance coping mechanisms. On the other hand, certain beliefs may discourage the use of medical services, delay treatment, or lead to harmful practices, especially when illnesses are attributed solely to spiritual causes.

In urban centers such as Lagos, where there is a high concentration of Pentecostal churches alongside modern healthcare facilities, the interaction between faith healing and medical treatment becomes even more pronounced. Lagos, being a cosmopolitan and religiously vibrant city, provides a unique context for examining how individuals negotiate between spiritual and medical approaches to health.

Despite the growing recognition of the interplay between faith and medicine, there remains a need for empirical studies that specifically examine how Pentecostal church members make decisions regarding health and treatment options. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for improving healthcare delivery, promoting effective health communication, and fostering collaboration between religious institutions and medical practitioners.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The increasing influence of Pentecostal churches in Nigeria has significantly shaped the health beliefs and treatment choices of many individuals. While faith healing provides hope, emotional support, and a sense of spiritual assurance, it also raises critical concerns regarding its impact on medical decision-making and health outcomes.

One major issue is that some Pentecostal adherents may delay or completely avoid seeking professional medical care due to strong beliefs in divine healing. In some cases, illnesses are interpreted as spiritual attacks or consequences of sin, leading individuals to rely exclusively on prayer and spiritual intervention rather than medical diagnosis and treatment. This can result in late presentation of diseases in hospitals, complications, and even preventable deaths.

Additionally, the coexistence of faith healing and biomedical treatment often creates confusion and conflict in health-seeking behavior. Individuals may switch between spiritual and medical treatments without proper coordination, which can negatively affect treatment adherence and effectiveness.

Another problem is the lack of integration between religious institutions and healthcare systems. Despite the significant role churches play in influencing health behavior, there is minimal collaboration between faith-based organizations and medical practitioners. This gap limits the potential for developing culturally sensitive healthcare strategies that respect religious beliefs while promoting evidence-based medical practices.

Moreover, there is insufficient empirical data on how members of Pentecostal churches in Lagos specifically make decisions regarding faith healing and medical treatment. Most existing studies have focused on general religious practices or other regions, leaving a gap in localized research that reflects the realities of Lagos State.

Given these challenges, it becomes necessary to investigate the extent to which faith healing influences medical treatment choices among Pentecostal church members. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors of individuals in selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State, with a view to understanding how these factors affect their health-seeking decisions.

1.3 Research Questions

1. What are the perceptions of Pentecostal church members regarding faith healing in Lagos State?
2. To what extent do these members rely on faith healing compared to medical treatment?
3. What factors influence their choice between faith healing and medical care?
4. What are the implications of these choices on their health outcomes?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of faith healing on medical treatment choices among members of selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Assess the perception of faith healing among Pentecostal church members.
2. Examine the extent to which faith healing influences medical treatment decisions.
3. Identify factors influencing the choice between faith healing and medical care.
4. Evaluate the implications of these choices on health outcomes.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Faith healing has no significant influence on medical treatment choices among members of selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to:

• Religious leaders, by providing insights into how faith practices affect members’ health behaviors.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on members of selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos. It examines their beliefs and practices regarding faith healing and how these influence their choices between spiritual and medical treatment.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Faith Healing: The use of spiritual means such as prayer and divine intervention to cure illness.
• Medical Treatment: The use of scientifically approved methods, including drugs and clinical procedures, to treat illness.
• Pentecostal Churches: Christian denominations emphasizing the work of the Holy Spirit, miracles, and divine healing.
• Health-Seeking Behavior: Actions taken by individuals in response to perceived health problems.
