INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Health-seeking behaviour refers to the actions individuals take to maintain health, prevent illness, and seek treatment when sick. In many developing countries, including Nigeria, these behaviours are shaped not only by biomedical knowledge but also by cultural, spiritual, and religious beliefs. Consequently, individuals often combine multiple healthcare systems such as orthodox medicine, traditional healing practices, and faith-based healing.

Traditional healing practices in Africa predate Western medicine and remain an integral part of healthcare delivery in many communities. These practices include the use of herbal remedies, spiritual healing, divination, and ritual therapies administered by traditional healers. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2019), approximately 80% of populations in developing countries rely on traditional medicine for primary healthcare due to its affordability, accessibility, and cultural acceptance. In Nigeria, traditional healing is particularly prevalent in rural areas where modern healthcare infrastructure is limited or difficult to access.

At the same time, Christianity plays a dominant role in shaping values, beliefs, and behavioural choices in Nigeria. The country is home to a large Christian population, especially in the southeastern region, where Nsukka is located. Christian doctrines often emphasize divine healing through prayer, fasting, and faith in God. Many churches teach that sickness can be overcome through spiritual intervention, while some discourage or caution against reliance on traditional healing practices, which may be associated with spiritual contamination or ancestral rituals.

Despite this, rural Christians frequently engage in a combination of Christian faith practices and traditional healing methods. This coexistence reflects a form of medical pluralism, where individuals navigate between different healthcare systems depending on perceived effectiveness, accessibility, and spiritual interpretation of illness. In many cases, Christians may pray in church while also consulting traditional healers or using herbal remedies at home.

In Nsukka, a predominantly rural and semi-urban area in Enugu State, Nigeria, these practices are particularly visible. The community has a strong Christian presence, yet traditional healing practices remain widely used. Many residents interpret illness through both biomedical and spiritual lenses, leading to health-seeking behaviours that combine prayer, church counseling, and traditional medicine.

Christian faith influences how individuals perceive illness and treatment. For example, some believers interpret sickness as a spiritual attack, requiring deliverance prayers, while others view traditional medicine as part of God’s natural provision for healing. Similarly, traditional healing practices are often seen not only as physical remedies but also as spiritual solutions for problems believed to have supernatural origins.

The interaction between Christian faith, traditional healing practices, and health-seeking behaviour raises important public health questions. It highlights the need to understand how rural Christians in Nsukka navigate these overlapping systems of care, and how their beliefs influence their choices when faced with illness. This understanding is essential for improving healthcare delivery, promoting safe health practices, and fostering collaboration between formal healthcare systems and culturally accepted healing practices.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the expansion of modern healthcare services in Nigeria, many rural communities continue to rely heavily on traditional healing practices alongside or instead of orthodox medical care. In Nsukka, rural Christians often exhibit mixed health-seeking behaviours, combining prayer, church-based healing, and traditional medicine depending on the nature of the illness and personal beliefs.

The problem arises from the conflicting influences of Christian faith and traditional healing practices on health decisions. While many Christian teachings emphasize reliance on God for healing and may discourage engagement with traditional healers, cultural beliefs and perceived effectiveness of herbal and spiritual remedies continue to attract rural Christians to traditional healing practices.

This situation creates inconsistency in health-seeking behaviour, where individuals may delay hospital visits, rely on unverified traditional remedies, or depend solely on spiritual healing even in serious medical conditions. Such behaviours may result in worsened health outcomes, late diagnosis, or preventable complications.

Furthermore, there is a lack of adequate empirical evidence specifically focusing on how Christian faith interacts with traditional healing practices to shape health-seeking behaviour among rural Christians in Nsukka. Most existing studies address either religion or traditional medicine separately, without sufficiently exploring their combined influence.

Another issue is the absence of clear guidance from some Christian denominations on the use of traditional healing methods. While some churches strongly oppose them, others adopt a more tolerant or silent approach, leaving members to interpret health choices independently. This lack of consistency contributes to confusion and diverse health practices among believers.

Therefore, the problem of this study lies in the unclear and complex relationship between Christian faith, traditional healing practices, and health-seeking behaviour among rural Christians in Nsukka, and how these factors jointly influence their healthcare decisions.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the relationship between Christian faith, traditional healing practices, and health-seeking behaviour among rural Christians in Nsukka.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Determine the influence of Christian faith on health-seeking behaviour.
2. Examine the role of traditional healing practices in healthcare choices.
3. Identify factors influencing the use of both Christian and traditional healing systems.
4. Assess how rural Christians in Nsukka integrate faith and traditional medicine in health decisions.

1.4 Research Questions

1. How does Christian faith influence health-seeking behaviour among rural Christians in Nsukka?
2. What role do traditional healing practices play in healthcare decisions?
3. What factors influence the choice between faith-based and traditional healing methods?
4. How do rural Christians combine Christian faith and traditional healing practices in managing health?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Christian faith has no significant influence on health-seeking behaviour among rural Christians in Nsukka.
H₁: Christian faith has a significant influence on health-seeking behaviour among rural Christians in Nsukka.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in several ways. First, it contributes to academic literature on the intersection of religion, culture, and healthcare behaviour in African societies.

Second, the findings will be useful to healthcare providers in understanding how religious beliefs influence patients’ decisions, thereby improving communication and healthcare delivery in rural communities.

Third, church leaders will benefit from the study by gaining insight into how their teachings affect members’ health decisions, enabling them to provide more balanced and informed guidance.

Fourth, traditional healers and practitioners will better understand how Christian beliefs shape acceptance or rejection of their services.

Finally, the study will assist policymakers in designing culturally sensitive health policies that integrate both modern and traditional healthcare systems for improved rural health outcomes.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to rural Christian communities in Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria. It focuses on the influence of Christian faith and traditional healing practices on health-seeking behaviour. The study does not cover urban populations or other religious groups.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Christian Faith: Beliefs, teachings, and practices based on Christianity, including reliance on prayer and divine healing.

Traditional Healing Practices: Indigenous healthcare methods involving herbal remedies, spiritual rituals, and traditional healers.

Health-Seeking Behaviour: Actions taken by individuals to maintain health or seek treatment when ill.

Rural Christians: Christian believers residing in rural areas with limited access to modern healthcare services.

Medical Pluralism: The use of multiple healthcare systems, including traditional, spiritual, and modern medicine.
