INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Education is universally recognized as one of the most effective instruments for personal development, moral transformation, and social progress. It plays a crucial role in shaping the behavior, attitudes, and character of young people. In Nigeria, the increasing rate of social vices among secondary school students has become a serious concern to parents, educators, religious leaders, and government authorities. Social vices such as examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, bullying, stealing, truancy, sexual immorality, cybercrime, violence, and disrespect for authority are becoming common among adolescents in many schools (Akinpelu, 2018). These negative behaviors threaten the academic environment and the future of the younger generation.

Secondary school students are in their adolescent stage, a period characterized by emotional instability, peer pressure, identity crisis, curiosity, and experimentation. During this developmental stage, students are highly vulnerable to external influences that may either shape them positively or negatively. Without proper moral guidance, many students are likely to engage in behaviors that are destructive to themselves and society. This makes moral and religious education highly necessary in schools (Ogunyemi, 2020).

Christian Education is a branch of religious education that focuses on teaching biblical principles, Christian values, moral discipline, love, honesty, obedience, humility, respect, and responsibility. It seeks to develop students spiritually, morally, socially, and intellectually through the study of the Bible and Christian doctrines. Christian Education goes beyond academic instruction by emphasizing character formation and ethical living (Adeyemo, 2019). Through Christian teachings, students are taught to avoid sinful and immoral behaviors and to cultivate virtues that promote peaceful coexistence.

The role of Christian Education in reducing social vices is increasingly important in a society experiencing moral decadence. Many homes today are unable to provide adequate moral upbringing due to broken family systems, economic hardship, busy work schedules of parents, and exposure to negative media influences. As a result, schools are expected to complement the home by instilling discipline and moral values into students. Christian Education therefore becomes a useful tool for restoring moral order among young people (Okafor, 2021).

In secondary schools, Christian Education teaches students about the consequences of wrong actions and the rewards of righteous living. Lessons on honesty discourage stealing and examination malpractice. Teachings on love and peace reduce bullying, violence, and hatred. Biblical lessons on self-control help students resist drug abuse, sexual immorality, and other harmful habits. Students who internalize these teachings are more likely to become responsible citizens and law-abiding members of society (Nwachukwu, 2020).

The prevalence of social vices among students in urban communities such as Ikorodu, Lagos State, has become alarming. Ikorodu is one of the rapidly growing areas in Lagos with increasing population, urbanization, and exposure to modern social challenges. Students in the area are exposed to peer influence, internet fraud culture, substance abuse, gang activities, and other negative practices. These realities make it necessary to examine the extent to which Christian Education can serve as a corrective and preventive measure against social vices among students.

Christian Education can also promote emotional healing, conflict resolution, and social responsibility. Students who are taught forgiveness, patience, tolerance, and service to humanity are less likely to engage in aggression and antisocial behavior. Such values contribute to a safer school environment where learning can thrive. Teachers of Christian Education also serve as mentors who guide students toward positive life choices (Eze, 2022).

Despite its importance, Christian Education is often undervalued in some schools where greater attention is given to science and commercial subjects. In some cases, the subject is poorly taught, lacks instructional materials, or is handled by unqualified teachers. This weakens its potential impact on students’ moral development. Therefore, there is a need to investigate how Christian Education can effectively reduce social vices among secondary school students in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

It is against this background that this study seeks to examine Christian Education as a tool for reducing social vices among secondary school students in secondary schools in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The increase in social vices among secondary school students has become one of the major challenges facing the Nigerian educational system. Cases of examination malpractice, cultism, truancy, bullying, drug abuse, stealing, fighting, sexual misconduct, and disrespect for teachers are frequently reported in many secondary schools. These behaviors negatively affect students’ academic performance, discipline, emotional well-being, and future prospects. They also create an unsafe and unconducive learning environment for both teachers and students.

In Ikorodu, Lagos State, the rapid growth of urban life, technological exposure, peer group pressure, and declining parental supervision have contributed to the spread of various social vices among adolescents. Many students now engage in behaviors that contradict acceptable moral standards. Some students are involved in internet fraud, substance abuse, school violence, absenteeism, and other deviant acts. If not properly addressed, these behaviors may lead to school dropout, criminal activities, and social instability.

Although Christian Education is designed to inculcate moral values and godly character, its role in addressing social vices among students has not been fully maximized. In some schools, the subject receives little attention, is not effectively taught, or is seen as less important compared to other academic subjects. Consequently, many students do not benefit from the moral teachings that could positively influence their conduct.

Furthermore, there is limited empirical evidence on the effectiveness of Christian Education in reducing social vices among secondary school students in Ikorodu. This gap in knowledge makes it necessary to investigate whether Christian Education can significantly contribute to moral discipline and reduction of antisocial behavior among students. Therefore, the problem of this study is to determine the extent to which Christian Education serves as a tool for reducing social vices among secondary school students in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine Christian Education as a tool for reducing social vices among secondary school students in Ikorodu, Lagos State. Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Examine the common social vices among secondary school students in Ikorodu.
2. Determine the influence of Christian Education on students’ moral behavior.
3. Investigate whether Christian Education helps reduce examination malpractice, bullying, and drug abuse.
4. Examine the challenges affecting effective teaching of Christian Education in schools.
5. Suggest ways of improving Christian Education for moral development of students.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. What are the common social vices among secondary school students in Ikorodu?
2. How does Christian Education influence students’ moral behavior?
3. To what extent does Christian Education reduce social vices among students?
4. What challenges hinder the effective teaching of Christian Education in schools?
5. What strategies can improve Christian Education as a moral tool?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Christian Education has no significant effect on reducing social vices among secondary school students in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

H₁: Christian Education has a significant effect on reducing social vices among secondary school students in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to students, teachers, parents, school administrators, curriculum planners, religious bodies, and government agencies.

Students will benefit through improved moral awareness and positive behavior. Teachers will gain insight into how Christian Education can be used to promote discipline. Parents will understand the importance of moral and religious upbringing. School administrators will use the findings to strengthen discipline policies. Curriculum planners may improve the content and delivery of Christian Education. Religious organizations and government agencies will also benefit in designing youth moral reformation programs.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on Christian Education as a tool for reducing social vices among secondary school students in selected secondary schools in Ikorodu, Lagos State. The study will cover issues such as examination malpractice, bullying, drug abuse, truancy, stealing, and violent behavior. Respondents will include students and teachers in selected secondary schools.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Christian Education: A school subject that teaches biblical knowledge, Christian beliefs, morals, and values for character development.

Social Vices: Negative behaviors that violate moral or social standards such as stealing, drug abuse, cultism, bullying, and examination malpractice.

Secondary School Students: Learners enrolled in junior or senior secondary schools.

Tool: A means or instrument used to achieve a purpose.

Moral Development: The process of learning right values, discipline, and acceptable behavior.
