INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education is widely regarded as a cornerstone of national development and a key determinant of economic growth, social mobility, and human capital formation. The effectiveness of any educational system depends not only on teachers and curriculum content but also on the availability and quality of school infrastructure. School infrastructure refers to the physical and material facilities that support teaching and learning processes, including classrooms, laboratories, libraries, sanitation facilities, electricity, water supply, ICT facilities, furniture, and recreational spaces.
Globally, research has consistently shown that adequate school infrastructure plays a significant role in enhancing students’ academic performance. According to UNESCO (2016), well-equipped learning environments contribute to improved student engagement, motivation, and learning outcomes. Similarly, Earthman (2004) emphasizes that the physical condition of school facilities has a direct impact on students’ concentration, attendance, and academic achievement.
In developed countries, school infrastructure is often well-maintained and technologically advanced, providing students with conducive learning environments that support interactive and student-centred learning. For example, modern classrooms with digital boards, science laboratories, and well-stocked libraries contribute to enhanced academic performance and skill development.
In developing countries, however, the situation is often different. Many schools face infrastructural deficits such as overcrowded classrooms, inadequate furniture, poor ventilation, lack of laboratories, and insufficient learning materials. These deficiencies negatively affect the quality of education and students’ academic performance.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, inadequate school infrastructure remains one of the major challenges facing public education systems. According to the World Bank (2018), poor school facilities contribute significantly to low learning outcomes in many African countries. Students in poorly equipped schools often experience reduced concentration, limited practical learning opportunities, and decreased motivation.
In Nigeria, the issue of school infrastructure is particularly critical in public secondary schools, where large student populations often exceed available facilities. Despite various government interventions aimed at improving education, many schools still suffer from inadequate classrooms, poor sanitation, lack of laboratories, and insufficient instructional materials.
Lagos State, being the economic hub of Nigeria and one of the most populous states in Africa, has witnessed rapid growth in student enrolment in public secondary schools. While the state government has made efforts to improve educational infrastructure through initiatives such as the construction of new classrooms and renovation of existing schools, infrastructural challenges still persist in many public secondary schools.
In several public secondary schools in Lagos State, classrooms are overcrowded, furniture is insufficient, and laboratories are either poorly equipped or completely unavailable. In some cases, students are forced to learn in unconducive environments, which may negatively affect their academic performance. Studies have shown that overcrowding and poor learning environments reduce students’ ability to concentrate and participate effectively in lessons (Ajayi & Ayodele, 2002).
Furthermore, inadequate infrastructure such as lack of electricity, poor ventilation, and insufficient teaching aids can hinder effective teaching and learning. For example, science subjects require functional laboratories for practical experiments, and the absence of such facilities limits students’ understanding of abstract concepts.
Empirical studies have established a strong relationship between school infrastructure and academic performance. Earthman (2004) found that students in well-maintained school buildings perform significantly better than those in poorly maintained facilities. Similarly, Okorie and Ugwuanyi (2014) reported that availability of adequate school facilities positively influences students’ academic achievement in Nigerian secondary schools.
Despite these findings, many public secondary schools in Lagos State continue to experience infrastructural deficits that may be affecting students’ academic outcomes. There is therefore a need to examine the extent to which school infrastructure influences students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Lagos State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite significant investments by the Lagos State government in the education sector, including the construction and renovation of school buildings, academic performance in many public secondary schools remains inconsistent. While some schools perform well in national examinations such as the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), many others continue to record poor results.
One of the major factors suspected to influence this inconsistency is the condition of school infrastructure. Adequate infrastructure is expected to create a conducive learning environment that enhances teaching effectiveness and improves students’ academic performance. However, in many public secondary schools in Lagos State, infrastructural facilities remain inadequate or poorly maintained.
Many schools experience overcrowded classrooms where the student-teacher ratio is too high, making effective instruction difficult. In such environments, students often struggle to concentrate, and teachers find it challenging to provide individualized attention. This situation can negatively affect students’ understanding of lessons and overall academic performance.
In addition, some schools lack functional science laboratories, libraries, and ICT facilities. This limits students’ exposure to practical learning experiences, which are essential for understanding key concepts, especially in science and technical subjects. Without adequate infrastructure, teaching becomes largely theoretical, reducing students’ ability to apply knowledge effectively.
Poor sanitation facilities and inadequate access to clean water in some schools also contribute to unhealthy learning environments. Such conditions may lead to increased absenteeism, poor concentration, and reduced academic engagement among students.
Furthermore, inadequate furniture and poorly maintained classrooms in some public secondary schools create discomfort that affects students’ ability to focus during lessons. In extreme cases, students are forced to sit on the floor or share limited desks, which is not conducive to effective learning.
Although previous studies have examined factors such as teacher quality, instructional methods, and student motivation, less attention has been given specifically to the effect of school infrastructure on academic performance in public secondary schools in Lagos State. This creates a gap in knowledge that needs to be addressed.
It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the effect of school infrastructure on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria.
1.3 Objective of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of school infrastructure on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Lagos State.
Specific objectives include:
- To assess the availability of school infrastructure in public secondary schools in Lagos State.
- To examine the relationship between school infrastructure and students’ academic performance.
- To identify infrastructural challenges affecting teaching and learning in public secondary schools.
- To determine how school infrastructure influences students’ academic engagement and performance.

1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: There is no significant relationship between school infrastructure and students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Lagos State.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between school infrastructure and students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Lagos State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant in several ways. First, it will contribute to existing literature on educational facilities and academic performance in Nigeria. Second, it will provide valuable insights for policymakers in Lagos State Ministry of Education on the importance of improving school infrastructure.
Third, school administrators will benefit from the findings by understanding how infrastructure affects student learning outcomes. Fourth, teachers will gain awareness of how learning environments influence teaching effectiveness. Finally, the study will serve as a reference for future researchers in the field of educational planning and administration.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study is limited to public secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. It focuses on school infrastructure and its effect on students’ academic performance.

School Infrastructure: Physical and material facilities in schools such as classrooms, laboratories, libraries, furniture, and sanitation facilities.
Academic Performance: The level of achievement of students in examinations and academic assessments.
Public Secondary School: Government-owned secondary institutions providing post-primary education.
Learning Environment: The physical and social conditions in which teaching and learning take place.
