INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Church administration plays a critical role in the effectiveness, sustainability, and spiritual health of Christian organizations. It involves the planning, organizing, coordinating, and supervision of church activities to ensure that spiritual and administrative goals are achieved efficiently. In Pentecostal churches, where rapid growth and dynamic ministry activities are common, effective administration becomes even more essential for maintaining order, promoting spiritual development, and ensuring membership stability.

Spiritual development refers to the gradual growth of believers in their faith, knowledge of Scripture, prayer life, and Christian character. It is a continuous process through which members become more Christ-like and mature in their spiritual walk. Membership stability, on the other hand, refers to the ability of a church to retain its members over time, preventing backsliding, disengagement, or transfer to other churches without proper spiritual grounding.

According to Your Church Can Grow, church growth and stability are strongly influenced by internal systems such as leadership structure, administrative efficiency, and discipleship processes. Wagner emphasizes that well-organized churches tend to grow not only numerically but also spiritually because administration provides the framework for effective ministry delivery.

Similarly, Understanding Church Growth explains that church growth is both a spiritual and organizational phenomenon. He argues that churches that develop strong administrative systems are better positioned to sustain evangelistic gains and nurture members into mature disciples.

In Pentecostal churches in urban centres such as Ibadan, Nigeria, there has been significant growth in membership due to strong evangelistic efforts, revival programmes, and charismatic worship experiences. However, despite this numerical increase, many churches struggle with issues related to spiritual depth and membership stability. Some members frequently move between churches, while others become inactive after initial enthusiasm.

This situation raises concerns about the effectiveness of church administration in ensuring consistent spiritual development. Administrative structures such as leadership coordination, departmental organization, discipleship programmes, communication systems, and welfare management all contribute to how well members are nurtured and retained in the church.

Furthermore, effective church administration ensures that spiritual programmes such as Bible study, prayer meetings, counseling, and discipleship training are properly coordinated. Without proper administration, even well-designed spiritual programmes may become ineffective or inconsistent, leading to weak spiritual development and poor member retention.

Therefore, understanding the influence of church administration on spiritual development and membership stability is essential for improving church effectiveness and ensuring long-term growth in Pentecostal churches.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the rapid expansion of Pentecostal churches in Ibadan, there remains a persistent challenge of unstable membership and inconsistent spiritual development among church members. While many churches experience numerical growth through evangelism and outreach programmes, sustaining members and ensuring their spiritual maturity continues to be a major concern.

One of the key issues is inadequate or ineffective church administration. In some Pentecostal churches, administrative structures are poorly coordinated, leading to weak implementation of spiritual programmes such as discipleship training, Bible study, and member follow-up. As a result, many members do not receive adequate spiritual guidance necessary for their growth in faith.

Another problem is the lack of clear organizational systems for managing church activities. In some cases, communication breakdowns between church leadership and departments affect the smooth execution of programmes that are meant to promote spiritual development. This creates confusion, inefficiency, and reduced participation among members.

Furthermore, membership instability is evident in the frequent movement of members from one church to another, often without proper spiritual grounding or accountability. This instability suggests that churches may be focusing more on numerical growth than on structured spiritual development and retention systems.

Additionally, some churches lack effective monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to assess the spiritual growth of their members. Without proper administrative oversight, it becomes difficult to identify struggling members or provide timely spiritual intervention.

If these issues are not addressed, Pentecostal churches in Ibadan may continue to experience high membership turnover and weak spiritual maturity among members, despite ongoing evangelistic success. It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the influence of church administration on spiritual development and membership stability in selected Pentecostal churches in Ibadan.

1.3 Objective of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of church administration on spiritual development and membership stability in selected Pentecostal churches in Ibadan.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Examine the role of church administration in spiritual development of members.
2. Assess the influence of administrative structures on membership stability.
3. Identify challenges affecting effective church administration.
4. Evaluate the relationship between church administration and church growth outcomes.

1.4 Research Questions

The study is guided by the following research questions:

1. What is the role of church administration in the spiritual development of members in Pentecostal churches in Ibadan?
2. How does church administration influence membership stability in Pentecostal churches?
3. What challenges affect effective church administration in Pentecostal churches in Ibadan?
4. What is the relationship between church administration and church growth outcomes?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between church administration and spiritual development and membership stability in selected Pentecostal churches in Ibadan.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between church administration and spiritual development and membership stability in selected Pentecostal churches in Ibadan.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to pastors, church administrators, and denominational leaders by highlighting the importance of effective administration in promoting spiritual growth and member stability. It will also help Pentecostal churches improve their organizational systems for better ministry outcomes. Academically, the study will contribute to literature on church management, leadership, and church growth in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to selected Pentecostal churches in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. It focuses on church administration and its influence on spiritual development and membership stability. Respondents include pastors, church workers, and church members involved in administrative and spiritual activities.

1.8 Definition of Terms
