INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Youths occupy a strategic position in every society because they represent the future leadership, workforce, and spiritual strength of the community. In the Christian faith, particularly within the Catholic Church, youths are regarded as important members whose active participation in church activities is essential for the continuity and growth of the Church. The Catholic Church emphasizes the spiritual formation of young people through active involvement in worship, prayer meetings, catechism classes, youth fellowships, evangelism, choir activities, retreats, seminars, and other religious programs designed to nurture faith and moral development.

Church activities serve as important channels through which Christian values, doctrines, and spiritual disciplines are transmitted to young believers. Participation in these activities is expected to strengthen youths spiritually, deepen their understanding of Christian teachings, encourage moral discipline, and foster commitment to God and the Church. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1994), the Church has the responsibility of guiding young people toward holiness and spiritual maturity through worship, sacraments, fellowship, and religious instruction. The Church also recognizes youths as active agents of evangelization and transformation within society.

Spiritual development refers to the process through which individuals grow in their relationship with God, understanding of Christian teachings, moral behavior, and commitment to religious practices. It involves the development of virtues such as love, humility, honesty, forgiveness, obedience, and self-discipline. Spiritual development is reflected in regular prayer life, participation in worship, commitment to church activities, and application of Christian principles in daily living. For Catholic youths, spiritual development is considered essential because it equips them to resist immoral influences and remain faithful to Christian teachings in a rapidly changing society.

The Catholic Church has historically placed great importance on youth ministry and youth participation in church life. Through organizations such as the Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria (CYON), Young Christian Students (YCS), altar servers, church choirs, Bible study groups, and charitable societies, Catholic youths are encouraged to participate actively in church programs and community service. These activities are intended not only to develop leadership skills and social responsibility but also to strengthen the spiritual lives of young people. Pope Francis (2019) emphasized that youths should not merely be spectators in the Church but active participants in the mission of evangelization and spiritual renewal.

In Nigeria, the Church continues to play a major role in addressing moral and social challenges affecting youths. Many young people are exposed to negative societal influences such as drug abuse, internet fraud, cultism, violence, sexual immorality, materialism, peer pressure, and social media addiction. These problems have raised serious concerns among parents, educators, and religious leaders regarding the declining moral and spiritual values among youths. Consequently, the Church has intensified efforts to engage youths in religious activities that promote spiritual growth and moral transformation.

Enugu State is widely recognized as one of the regions in Nigeria with strong Catholic presence and deep Christian heritage. Catholic parishes in Enugu organize various spiritual programs and youth activities aimed at promoting faith development and active participation among young people. These activities include youth conventions, retreats, prayer meetings, choir rehearsals, evangelism outreaches, catechism classes, and leadership seminars. Despite these efforts, there appears to be growing concern regarding the level of youth participation in church activities and its impact on their spiritual development.

Many Catholic youths in Enugu participate less actively in church activities due to academic pressure, unemployment, peer influence, technological distractions, and changing societal values. Some youths attend church services irregularly and show limited interest in spiritual programs organized by the Church. Others are more attracted to secular entertainment and social media than religious activities. As a result, some youths exhibit declining commitment to prayer, moral discipline, church teachings, and active Christian living. This situation raises questions regarding whether participation in church activities significantly contributes to the spiritual development of Catholic youths.

Furthermore, active participation in church activities is expected to influence the moral and spiritual lives of youths positively. Youths who engage regularly in church programs are likely to develop stronger faith, deeper understanding of Christian teachings, and greater commitment to moral values. They may also benefit from mentorship, fellowship, emotional support, and opportunities for leadership development within the Church community. However, inadequate youth engagement programs, lack of motivation, poor parental support, and insufficient mentorship may reduce the effectiveness of church activities in promoting spiritual development among youths.

The role of church leaders, parents, and youth coordinators is also critical in encouraging active youth participation in church life. Priests and youth leaders are expected to create inclusive and meaningful programs that address the spiritual and social needs of young people. Parents are equally expected to support and encourage their children’s involvement in church activities by serving as role models of Christian commitment. However, where these support systems are weak, youths may gradually lose interest in church participation and spiritual matters.

Several scholars have emphasized the importance of youth participation in church activities for spiritual growth and moral transformation. Nwankwo (2020) observed that active involvement in church activities contributes significantly to faith development and moral discipline among youths. Similarly, Edeh (2021) noted that Catholic youths who regularly participate in church programs demonstrate higher levels of spiritual commitment and positive social behavior compared to those who are less involved. Despite these findings, there is limited empirical research specifically examining youth participation in church activities and spiritual development in Catholic parishes in Enugu.

Therefore, this study seeks to assess youth participation in church activities and spiritual development in Catholic parishes in Enugu. The study intends to determine whether participation in church activities contributes significantly to the spiritual growth, moral behavior, and faith commitment of Catholic youths. The findings of the study are expected to contribute to youth ministry development, pastoral planning, and spiritual formation strategies within the Catholic Church.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The Catholic Church places great emphasis on the spiritual formation and active involvement of youths in church life. Through participation in church activities such as Mass attendance, choir membership, prayer meetings, Bible study groups, youth fellowships, retreats, catechism classes, and evangelism programs, Catholic youths are expected to grow spiritually, develop moral discipline, and strengthen their relationship with God. The Church believes that active youth participation is essential for nurturing future leaders and sustaining the mission of evangelization within society.

Despite the numerous spiritual programs organized by Catholic parishes in Enugu, there appears to be a decline in the level of youth participation in church activities. Many youths show little interest in church programs and prefer secular entertainment, social media engagement, and other worldly activities. Some youths attend church services irregularly, while others participate only during special occasions without genuine spiritual commitment. This situation has become a major concern for church leaders, parents, and educators who are worried about the weakening spiritual lives of many young people.

In addition, many youths who identify as Catholics still engage in behaviors that contradict Christian teachings, including dishonesty, internet fraud, substance abuse, disrespect for authority, sexual immorality, violence, and other social vices. This raises concerns regarding whether participation in church activities is effectively influencing the spiritual development and moral behavior of Catholic youths. It also creates uncertainty about the extent to which church activities contribute to genuine faith formation among young people.

Another problem is that some church youth programs may not adequately address the social, emotional, and spiritual challenges faced by modern youths. Inadequate mentorship, lack of relevant youth-centered programs, poor communication between church leaders and youths, and insufficient parental involvement may reduce the effectiveness of church activities in promoting spiritual growth. Furthermore, economic hardship, academic pressure, unemployment, and peer influence may discourage many youths from active participation in church life.

Although previous studies have examined youth ministry and religious participation, few studies have specifically focused on the relationship between youth participation in church activities and spiritual development in Catholic parishes in Enugu. This creates a gap in knowledge that this study seeks to fill. Therefore, the problem of this study is to determine whether youth participation in church activities significantly influences spiritual development among Catholic youths in Enugu.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to assess youth participation in church activities and spiritual development in Catholic parishes in Enugu. Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Examine the level of youth participation in church activities in Catholic parishes in Enugu.
2. Determine the influence of church activities on the spiritual development of Catholic youths.
3. Assess the relationship between participation in church activities and moral behavior among Catholic youths.
4. Identify factors affecting youth participation in church activities in Catholic parishes in Enugu.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. What is the level of youth participation in church activities in Catholic parishes in Enugu?
2. How do church activities influence the spiritual development of Catholic youths?
3. What relationship exists between participation in church activities and moral behavior among Catholic youths?
4. What factors affect youth participation in church activities in Catholic parishes in Enugu?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested in the study:

H₀: Youth participation in church activities has no significant influence on spiritual development among Catholic youths in Enugu.

H₁: Youth participation in church activities has a significant influence on spiritual development among Catholic youths in Enugu.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be beneficial to church leaders, Catholic youths, parents, youth coordinators, researchers, and theologians.

The study will help church leaders understand the importance of encouraging active youth participation in church activities for spiritual growth and moral transformation.

Youth coordinators and priests will benefit from the study by gaining insight into effective strategies for improving youth engagement and spiritual formation within Catholic parishes.

Catholic youths will benefit from the study as it will create awareness of the spiritual and moral benefits of active participation in church activities.

Parents will benefit from the study by understanding the need to support and encourage their children’s involvement in religious activities and spiritual development.

Researchers and scholars in theology and religious studies will benefit from the findings as the study will contribute to existing literature on youth ministry and spiritual development within the Catholic Church.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the assessment of youth participation in church activities and spiritual development in Catholic parishes in Enugu State, Nigeria. The study will specifically examine the level of youth participation in church activities, its influence on spiritual development and moral behavior, and factors affecting youth participation.

The study will be limited to selected Catholic parishes in Enugu.
