INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The family is universally recognized as the foundational unit of society and an important institution ordained by God for the nurturing of moral, spiritual, emotional, and social values. In Christianity, the husband is often regarded as the spiritual head of the family with the responsibility of leading the home according to biblical principles. One of the major ways through which Christian husbands fulfill this responsibility is through prayer. Prayer is a vital spiritual exercise in the Christian faith, serving as a medium of communication between believers and God. The Bible emphasizes the importance of prayer in family life, leadership, and spiritual development. Consequently, a praying husband is often perceived as a key factor in ensuring family progress, unity, stability, and spiritual growth.

In contemporary society, families face numerous challenges such as financial instability, marital conflicts, moral decadence, poor communication, insecurity, and declining spiritual commitment. These challenges have negatively affected many Christian homes in Nigeria, including those in Abuja. The increasing rate of divorce, family disintegration, juvenile delinquency, and spiritual decline among children has generated concerns among religious leaders, scholars, and counselors. As a result, attention has increasingly been directed toward the role of spiritual leadership within the home, especially the influence of husbands who actively engage in prayer and spiritual guidance.

Prayer has long been considered a powerful tool for transformation and divine intervention in Christian theology. According to Adeboye (2019), prayer strengthens family unity, promotes emotional stability, and encourages moral discipline among family members. A husband who consistently prays for his family is believed to create an atmosphere of peace, love, protection, and divine direction within the household. Such spiritual leadership often inspires other family members to develop stronger relationships with God and participate actively in Christian activities. Through regular family devotions, intercessory prayers, and scriptural teachings, husbands contribute significantly to the spiritual growth of their wives and children.

Family progress can be viewed from different dimensions including spiritual progress, financial improvement, educational advancement, emotional well-being, and social stability. In many Christian homes, prayer is believed to contribute positively to these areas by fostering discipline, wisdom, unity, and divine favor. The Bible in Proverbs 3:5–6 encourages believers to trust in the Lord for direction and success. Consequently, husbands who pray regularly for their families are often perceived as instruments through whom God releases blessings, guidance, and protection upon the household.

Spiritual growth, on the other hand, refers to the continuous development of an individual’s faith, Christian character, biblical understanding, and relationship with God. In many Christian traditions, the husband is expected to lead family worship, encourage biblical values, and model godly behavior. Ephesians 5:23 describes the husband as the head of the wife just as Christ is the head of the Church. This leadership role extends beyond financial provision to include spiritual nurturing and mentorship. Therefore, a husband who prioritizes prayer may significantly influence the spiritual maturity and commitment of family members.

In Nigeria, particularly in Abuja, Christianity plays an influential role in shaping family values and social behavior. Abuja, being the Federal Capital Territory, consists of diverse ethnic groups, denominations, and socio-economic classes. Despite the religious activities and proliferation of churches in the city, many Christian families still experience crises such as marital instability, poor parenting, domestic violence, and spiritual lukewarmness. Scholars and church leaders have attributed some of these problems to the neglect of spiritual responsibilities by family heads, especially husbands.

Several studies have highlighted the importance of spiritual leadership in promoting healthy family relationships. For instance, Okeke (2020) observed that husbands who maintain active prayer lives often demonstrate greater emotional maturity, patience, and commitment to family responsibilities. Similarly, Johnson and Williams (2018) argued that family prayer enhances communication, reduces conflicts, and strengthens marital satisfaction. However, despite these observations, there remains limited empirical research focusing specifically on the influence of praying husbands on family progress and spiritual growth within the Nigerian context, particularly among Christian families in Abuja.

Furthermore, societal modernization, economic pressures, and exposure to secular ideologies have contributed to a decline in spiritual commitment among many men. Some husbands devote more time to work, social engagements, and material pursuits than to spiritual leadership within the home. This neglect often affects the spiritual atmosphere of the family and weakens moral discipline among children. Consequently, understanding the influence of a praying husband on family development becomes highly relevant in addressing contemporary family challenges.

This study therefore seeks to examine the influence of a praying husband on family progress and spiritual growth among selected Christian families in Abuja, Nigeria. The study aims to determine whether consistent prayer leadership by husbands contributes significantly to family unity, moral development, emotional stability, and spiritual maturity among family members.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The family institution in contemporary Nigerian society is facing increasing challenges that threaten its stability, unity, and spiritual well-being. Many Christian homes experience problems such as marital conflicts, poor communication, financial difficulties, disobedience among children, moral decline, emotional instability, and weak spiritual commitment. Despite the widespread presence of churches and religious teachings in Abuja, these problems continue to persist among many Christian families.

One major concern observed in many homes is the declining spiritual leadership role of husbands. Traditionally and biblically, husbands are expected to serve as spiritual heads of their families through prayer, biblical teaching, and godly example. However, many husbands appear to neglect these responsibilities due to work pressures, material pursuits, social distractions, and lack of spiritual discipline. In some cases, spiritual responsibilities within the family are left entirely to wives, church leaders, or religious institutions. This neglect has contributed to weak family devotion, declining moral values, poor spiritual mentorship for children, and reduced unity within the home.

Additionally, there is growing concern about the spiritual condition of many Christian families. Some children from Christian homes become involved in immoral behaviors, substance abuse, disobedience, and other social vices despite their religious backgrounds. Marital instability and emotional disconnection are also increasingly common. These developments raise questions about the effectiveness of spiritual leadership within families and the extent to which husbands contribute to the spiritual growth and progress of their households through prayer.

Although prayer is widely recognized in Christianity as a powerful instrument for divine guidance, protection, peace, and transformation, many families still struggle with crises that could be linked to inadequate spiritual leadership. Some husbands rarely organize family devotions, intercede for their wives and children, or encourage consistent spiritual practices at home. This situation may negatively affect family progress in areas such as unity, emotional well-being, financial stability, moral discipline, and spiritual maturity.

Furthermore, while previous studies have examined marriage, parenting, and church leadership, limited attention has been given specifically to the influence of a praying husband on family progress and spiritual growth within Christian homes in Abuja, Nigeria. There is therefore a gap in knowledge regarding how husbands’ prayer lives affect the development, unity, and spirituality of their families.

It is against this background that this study seeks to investigate the influence of a praying husband on family progress and spiritual growth among selected Christian families in Abuja, Nigeria.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of a praying husband on family progress and spiritual growth among selected Christian families in Abuja, Nigeria. Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Examine the influence of a praying husband on family unity and stability.
2. Determine the effect of a praying husband on the spiritual growth of family members.
3. Investigate the relationship between husbands’ prayer lives and moral development within the family.
4. Assess the contribution of a praying husband to family progress and emotional well-being.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. What influence does a praying husband have on family unity and stability?
2. How does a praying husband contribute to the spiritual growth of family members?
3. What relationship exists between husbands’ prayer lives and moral development within the family?
4. To what extent does a praying husband contribute to family progress and emotional well-being?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested in the study:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between a praying husband and family progress and spiritual growth among selected Christian families in Abuja, Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to Christian families, church leaders, marriage counselors, theologians, researchers, and society at large.

The study will help Christian husbands understand the importance of prayer as a spiritual responsibility and leadership tool within the family. It will encourage husbands to become more committed to praying for their wives, children, and family affairs.

Church leaders and counselors will benefit from the findings by gaining deeper insights into how spiritual leadership influences family stability and growth. The study may also assist churches in developing programs and seminars aimed at strengthening family prayer life and marital relationships.

The findings will contribute to academic knowledge in Christian religious studies, theology, pastoral counseling, and family studies. Future researchers may also use the study as reference material for related studies.

Additionally, society will benefit from the promotion of stable, morally upright, and spiritually grounded families, which are essential for social peace and development.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the influence of a praying husband on family progress and spiritual growth among selected Christian families in Abuja, Nigeria. The study will specifically examine how husbands’ prayer lives affect family unity, emotional stability, moral development, spiritual maturity, and overall family progress. The study will be limited to selected churches and Christian families within Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Praying Husband: A Christian husband who consistently engages in personal and family prayer for the spiritual and physical well-being of his household.

Family Progress: Positive development within the family, including unity, emotional stability, financial improvement, educational advancement, and peaceful relationships.

Spiritual Growth: Continuous development in Christian faith, moral behavior, biblical understanding, and relationship with God among family members.

Christian Families: Families that identify with the Christian faith and practice Christian teachings and values.

Prayer: Communication between believers and God involving worship, thanksgiving, supplication, and intercession.
