Project – The Role of Christian Counselling in Addressing Peer Pressure Among Teenagers in Five Selected Secondary Schools in Yaba, Lagos

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Adolescence is a critical stage in human development characterized by rapid physical, emotional, social, moral, and psychological changes. During this period, teenagers are highly susceptible to external influences, especially from peers. Peer pressure refers to the influence exerted by individuals within the same age group to encourage conformity in attitudes, behaviours, values, dressing patterns, academic choices, and social lifestyles. While peer influence can sometimes produce positive outcomes such as academic motivation and social development, negative peer pressure often leads teenagers into harmful behaviours such as cultism, drug abuse, sexual immorality, truancy, bullying, internet fraud, disobedience, violence, and other forms of delinquency (Iheanacho et al., 2023).

In contemporary Nigerian society, the challenge of peer pressure among secondary school students has become increasingly alarming. Urban centres such as Yaba are characterized by high exposure to social media, changing moral standards, youth subcultures, and increasing social competition among teenagers. Secondary school students in such environments often struggle with identity formation and acceptance among peers. Many teenagers desire social approval and belonging, which may compel them to imitate negative behaviours exhibited by friends and classmates. Studies have shown that peer pressure significantly influences adolescent behaviour, psychological wellbeing, academic performance, and involvement in risky activities (ALHASSAN et al., 2024).

Research has further revealed that peer pressure contributes to various social and behavioural problems among adolescents in Nigeria. Adegoke and Ayoade (2007) observed that peer pressure is strongly associated with at-risk behaviours among adolescents, particularly within school environments. Similarly, Fehintola et al. (2025) established that peer pressure influences delinquent behaviour, substance abuse, sexual misconduct, poor academic engagement, and emotional instability among teenagers. These findings indicate that peer pressure remains one of the major psychosocial challenges confronting adolescents in secondary schools.

The family, school, religious institutions, and counselling services are expected to guide teenagers toward positive moral and behavioural development. Among these institutions, the church and Christian counselling ministries play a unique role in shaping the character and values of young people. Christian counselling combines biblical principles with psychological and counselling approaches in addressing emotional, moral, spiritual, and behavioural challenges. Christian counselling seeks to help individuals make godly decisions, develop moral discipline, build self-esteem, resist temptation, and maintain healthy relationships through scriptural teachings, prayer, mentoring, and spiritual guidance.

Christian counselling is rooted in biblical teachings that emphasize moral uprightness, self-control, wisdom, and obedience to God. The Bible encourages believers not to conform to worldly patterns but to renew their minds through godly values (Romans 12:2, New International Version). Christian counsellors therefore help teenagers understand their identity in Christ, develop confidence, and resist destructive peer influences. Through counselling sessions, Bible studies, mentorship programmes, and spiritual guidance, teenagers can acquire coping strategies for handling peer pressure and making responsible decisions.

In many Christian communities, counsellors, pastors, youth leaders, and teachers provide guidance to teenagers experiencing emotional confusion, social pressure, and behavioural conflicts. Christian counselling encourages teenagers to cultivate virtues such as discipline, integrity, patience, humility, and fear of God. It also promotes emotional healing, moral accountability, and positive social interaction. Group counselling and peer mentoring within Christian settings may further assist adolescents in building supportive relationships that discourage negative peer influence. Omisola et al. (2022) noted that counselling interventions significantly improve behavioural adjustment and psychosocial wellbeing among adolescents.

Despite the growing importance of Christian counselling, many teenagers in secondary schools continue to experience difficulties resisting peer influence. The increasing prevalence of social vices among students suggests that moral and spiritual guidance may be inadequate or ineffective in some school environments. Some teenagers lack access to professional counselling services, while others are unwilling to seek guidance due to fear, shame, or peer intimidation. In addition, secularization, family instability, media exposure, and declining spiritual commitment among youths have weakened moral standards in many communities.

In schools located within Yaba, students are exposed to diverse social interactions and urban lifestyles that may increase susceptibility to peer pressure. Consequently, there is a need to examine how Christian counselling can help teenagers resist negative peer influence and promote positive behavioural outcomes. This study therefore investigates the role of Christian counselling in addressing peer pressure among teenagers in five selected secondary schools in Yaba, Lagos.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Peer pressure has become one of the most significant challenges affecting teenagers in secondary schools in Nigeria. Many adolescents desire acceptance, recognition, and social identity among their peers, thereby making them vulnerable to negative influences. In many schools, teenagers are pressured into engaging in behaviours such as drug abuse, examination malpractice, truancy, indecent dressing, internet fraud, cultism, violence, and sexual immorality. These behaviours negatively affect students’ academic performance, moral development, emotional wellbeing, and future aspirations (Fehintola et al., 2025).

In urban areas such as Yaba, teenagers are increasingly exposed to modern social trends, media influences, and unhealthy peer networks. Many parents and teachers have expressed concern over the growing rate of indiscipline, disrespect for authority, and risky behaviours among adolescents. Although schools often provide guidance and counselling services, many teenagers still struggle to cope effectively with peer pressure. This situation raises concerns about the adequacy of moral, spiritual, and counselling interventions available to students.

Christian counselling has been recognized as an important means of promoting moral discipline, spiritual growth, emotional stability, and positive decision-making among young people. Through biblical teachings, counselling sessions, mentorship, prayer, and spiritual guidance, Christian counselling may help teenagers resist negative peer influence and develop healthy behaviours. However, despite the increasing need for counselling interventions, there appears to be limited empirical studies specifically examining the role of Christian counselling in addressing peer pressure among secondary school students in Yaba, Lagos.

Furthermore, many teenagers do not fully understand the value of Christian counselling, while some schools may not adequately integrate spiritual and moral counselling into their student support systems. The absence of effective Christian counselling programmes may contribute to the persistence of negative peer influence among students. It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the role of Christian counselling in addressing peer pressure among teenagers in five selected secondary schools in Yaba, Lagos.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

Churches and Christian organizations will find the study useful in designing youth counselling programmes, mentorship activities, and spiritual development initiatives targeted at teenagers.

Educational administrators and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen counselling services and moral education within secondary schools.

Finally, the study will contribute to existing literature on adolescent counselling, peer pressure, and Christian education, thereby serving as reference material for future researchers.
