INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Sanitation and hygiene are fundamental components of public health and human well-being. Proper sanitation and good hygiene practices are essential for the prevention and control of communicable diseases, particularly waterborne diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2023), inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene contribute significantly to the global burden of diseases, especially in developing countries where access to clean water and sanitation facilities remains limited.
Waterborne diseases are illnesses caused by pathogenic microorganisms transmitted through contaminated water. Common examples include cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery, diarrhea, hepatitis A, and other gastrointestinal infections. These diseases remain major public health concerns in many African countries, including Nigeria, due to poor environmental sanitation, inadequate waste disposal systems, unsafe drinking water, and poor personal hygiene practices (UNICEF, 2022).
Secondary school students are among the vulnerable groups affected by poor sanitation and hygiene conditions. Students spend a considerable amount of time in school environments where inadequate toilet facilities, overcrowding, poor waste management, and lack of access to clean water can increase their exposure to waterborne diseases. In many public secondary schools in Nigeria, sanitary conditions are often poor due to insufficient government funding, poor maintenance culture, and increasing student population.
Good hygiene practices such as regular handwashing with soap, proper disposal of refuse, use of clean toilets, safe handling of food and water, and maintenance of a clean environment are essential in reducing the spread of infections. However, many students lack adequate knowledge of personal hygiene or fail to practice healthy sanitation behaviors consistently. Curtis and Cairncross (2018) observed that poor hand hygiene alone contributes greatly to the spread of diarrheal diseases among school-aged children.
In Osogbo, the capital city of Osun State, rapid urbanization and population growth have increased environmental sanitation challenges. Many communities experience problems related to improper waste disposal, blocked drainage systems, inadequate toilet facilities, and poor access to potable water. These conditions create favorable environments for the transmission of waterborne diseases, particularly among children and adolescents attending secondary schools.
The school environment plays a vital role in promoting healthy behaviors among students. Schools with poor sanitation facilities often expose students to health risks that may negatively affect their academic performance, attendance, concentration, and general well-being. Studies have shown that students who frequently suffer from waterborne diseases may experience absenteeism, low academic achievement, fatigue, and reduced classroom participation (Aremu, 2019).
Furthermore, poor sanitation and hygiene practices not only affect students physically but also have social and psychological consequences. Inadequate sanitation facilities can discourage students, especially female students, from attending school regularly. Lack of clean toilets and water supply may create discomfort, embarrassment, and increased vulnerability to infections.
The Nigerian government and international organizations have introduced several sanitation and hygiene promotion programs aimed at improving environmental health in schools and communities. Programs such as Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) initiatives seek to improve access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education. Despite these efforts, many schools still face serious sanitation challenges due to poor implementation, inadequate funding, and lack of awareness among students and school authorities.
Research has indicated that poor sanitation and hygiene practices are strongly associated with the prevalence of waterborne diseases among school children in developing countries (Prüss-Ustün et al., 2019). However, there is limited empirical evidence specifically focusing on secondary school students in Osogbo. This creates a need for further investigation into how sanitation and hygiene practices influence the occurrence of waterborne diseases among students in the area.
This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of poor sanitation and hygiene practices on the prevalence of waterborne diseases among secondary school students in Osogbo. The study aims to identify common sanitation challenges, assess hygiene behaviors among students, and determine the relationship between poor hygiene practices and the occurrence of waterborne diseases.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Waterborne diseases continue to pose serious health challenges in many developing countries, including Nigeria. Despite increased awareness of environmental sanitation and hygiene practices, many secondary school students still suffer from preventable diseases associated with contaminated water, poor sanitation, and unhealthy hygiene behaviors.
In many secondary schools in Osogbo, sanitation facilities are either inadequate or poorly maintained. Some schools lack functional toilets, clean water supply, proper drainage systems, and effective waste disposal mechanisms. Students in such environments are often exposed to unhygienic conditions that increase their risk of contracting waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, typhoid fever, and dysentery.
Poor personal hygiene practices among students further worsen the situation. Many students fail to wash their hands regularly after using the toilet or before eating, while some consume food and water from unsafe sources. In addition, indiscriminate disposal of refuse and open defecation in some communities contribute significantly to environmental contamination and disease transmission.
Although government agencies and health organizations have introduced sanitation and hygiene programs in schools, the prevalence of waterborne diseases among students remains high in many areas. This suggests that existing interventions may not be sufficiently effective or properly implemented. In some cases, students may lack adequate knowledge of hygiene practices or may not have access to necessary sanitation facilities.
The frequent occurrence of waterborne diseases among students can negatively affect their health, academic performance, school attendance, and overall quality of life. Students who are repeatedly ill may miss classes, perform poorly academically, and experience physical weakness and emotional stress.
Furthermore, while several studies have examined sanitation and hygiene issues in Nigeria generally, limited studies have specifically investigated the effect of poor sanitation and hygiene practices on the prevalence of waterborne diseases among secondary school students in Osogbo. This gap in knowledge makes it necessary to conduct this study.
Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the extent to which poor sanitation and hygiene practices contribute to the prevalence of waterborne diseases among secondary school students in Osogbo.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of poor sanitation and hygiene practices on the prevalence of waterborne diseases among secondary school students in Osogbo.
The specific objectives are to:
- identify the common sanitation and hygiene practices among secondary school students in Osogbo;
- examine the prevalence of waterborne diseases among secondary school students in Osogbo;
- determine the relationship between poor sanitation practices and waterborne diseases among students;
- assess the level of awareness of hygiene practices among secondary school students.
1.4 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions:
- What are the common sanitation and hygiene practices among secondary school students in Osogbo?
- What is the prevalence of waterborne diseases among secondary school students in Osogbo?
- Is there a relationship between poor sanitation practices and the occurrence of waterborne diseases among students?
- What is the level of awareness of hygiene practices among secondary school students?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: There is no significant relationship between poor sanitation and hygiene practices and the prevalence of waterborne diseases among secondary school students in Osogbo.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between poor sanitation and hygiene practices and the prevalence of waterborne diseases among secondary school students in Osogbo.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will be beneficial to students, teachers, school administrators, public health officials, government agencies, parents, and researchers. The findings of the study will help school authorities understand the importance of maintaining proper sanitation facilities and promoting good hygiene practices among students.
The study will also assist public health officials and policymakers in developing effective sanitation and hygiene intervention programs in schools. It will provide useful information for government agencies responsible for environmental health and disease prevention.
Furthermore, the study will contribute to existing literature on sanitation, hygiene, and waterborne diseases and serve as a reference material for future researchers in the field of public health and environmental health.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the effect of poor sanitation and hygiene practices on the prevalence of waterborne diseases among secondary school students in Osogbo, Osun State. The study will specifically cover selected secondary schools in Osogbo and will examine students’ sanitation behaviors, hygiene awareness, and experiences with waterborne diseases.
