INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Marriage is a sacred institution established by God for companionship, procreation, mutual support, and the stability of society. In Christianity, marriage is regarded as a holy covenant between a man and a woman, founded on love, faithfulness, understanding, and shared spiritual values. The Bible teaches that husband and wife should live in unity and harmony as one body (Genesis 2:24). Christian marriage is therefore expected to promote peace, spiritual growth, and moral development within the family and society. However, in contemporary society, various challenges have affected the stability and unity of marriages, especially inter-religious marriages.

Inter-religious marriage refers to a marital union between individuals from different religious backgrounds or faiths. In Nigeria, inter-religious marriage commonly occurs between Christians and Muslims or between Christians and adherents of African Traditional Religion. The increasing interaction among people from different religious groups due to education, urbanization, migration, and modernization has contributed to the rise of inter-religious marriages in many parts of the country. Southern Nigeria, known for its religious diversity and cultural interactions, has witnessed a growing number of such marriages among young people.

Although inter-religious marriage may encourage tolerance, cultural interaction, and peaceful coexistence, it also presents several challenges that may affect family unity. Family unity refers to the peaceful coexistence, emotional bond, mutual understanding, and cooperation among members of a family. In many Christian homes, differences in religious beliefs, doctrines, worship patterns, and moral values often create misunderstandings and conflicts between spouses. According to Adewale (2019), religious incompatibility remains one of the major causes of marital disagreement and family instability in many Nigerian homes.

Religion plays a very important role in shaping individual beliefs, attitudes, moral values, and family practices. In marriage, religion influences decisions concerning child upbringing, worship, celebrations, dietary practices, dress code, and family responsibilities. When couples belong to different religious backgrounds, disagreements may arise over how children should be raised, where the family should worship, and which religious principles should guide the home. Such disagreements may weaken emotional intimacy and family unity. Eze and Ibrahim (2020) observed that inter-religious marriages often experience tension due to conflicting religious expectations and practices.

In Southern Nigeria, Christianity has continued to maintain strong influence on family life and social relationships. Many Christian denominations emphasize the importance of marrying within the Christian faith to ensure spiritual compatibility and peaceful family life. Biblical teachings such as 2 Corinthians 6:14 caution Christians against unequal yoking with unbelievers. Many church leaders interpret this teaching as discouragement against inter-religious marriage because of possible spiritual and marital conflicts. Despite these teachings, many Christians still engage in inter-religious marriages for reasons such as love, economic advantage, educational exposure, and social interaction.

The effects of inter-religious marriage on family unity have become a major concern among religious leaders, parents, and counsellors in Southern Nigeria. Some families experience disputes over religious identity, conversion pressure, and participation in religious activities. In some homes, spouses may attempt to impose their religious beliefs on one another, leading to resentment and misunderstanding. Children from inter-religious homes may also experience confusion regarding religious identity and spiritual upbringing. According to Nwankwo (2018), children raised in interfaith homes sometimes struggle with religious commitment due to exposure to conflicting beliefs and practices.

Furthermore, societal and family pressures often affect inter-religious marriages. Extended family members may disapprove of such unions due to religious differences and cultural expectations. In some cases, families interfere in marital affairs, thereby increasing tension between couples. Traditional beliefs and religious sentiments in many Nigerian communities often discourage interfaith unions, especially when one partner is expected to convert to another religion before marriage. Such pressures may create emotional stress and reduce unity within the family.

Another major issue associated with inter-religious marriage is the challenge of maintaining spiritual harmony within the home. Shared faith is often considered an important factor in building understanding, cooperation, and emotional support among couples. Christian teachings encourage spouses to pray together, worship together, and grow spiritually together. However, in inter-religious marriages, couples may find it difficult to participate in common religious activities because of doctrinal differences. This situation may weaken communication and spiritual bonding between spouses.

Despite these challenges, some inter-religious marriages experience peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among spouses. Couples who practice tolerance, understanding, and open communication may overcome religious differences and maintain stable family relationships. According to Yusuf and Etim (2021), successful inter-religious marriages are often characterized by respect for individual beliefs, effective communication, and willingness to compromise on religious matters. This suggests that family unity in inter-religious marriages may depend largely on the attitudes and level of understanding between couples.

In Southern Nigeria, churches and religious organizations have continued to address issues relating to inter-religious marriage through counselling, seminars, and teachings on Christian marriage principles. Many churches advise members to seek spiritual guidance before entering marriage relationships involving religious differences. Marriage counsellors often emphasize the importance of compatibility, communication, and shared values in sustaining family unity. However, despite these efforts, cases of marital conflict and family disunity arising from inter-religious marriages continue to increase in some communities.

Economic hardship, modernization, and globalization have also contributed to changing attitudes toward marriage in Nigeria. Many young people now place greater emphasis on personal feelings and economic security than on religious compatibility when choosing marriage partners. Social media and increased social interaction among different religious groups have further encouraged interfaith relationships. Consequently, traditional restrictions concerning inter-religious marriage are gradually becoming weaker in some urban areas of Southern Nigeria.

The increasing rate of marital conflicts, separation, and misunderstanding associated with inter-religious marriages has attracted the attention of scholars and religious leaders. Family disunity resulting from religious differences may affect not only couples but also children and society at large. Broken homes, emotional instability, poor child upbringing, and weakened moral values are among the social consequences associated with unstable marriages. Therefore, understanding the effects of inter-religious marriage on family unity has become necessary for promoting peaceful family relationships and social harmony.

It is against this background that this study seeks to assess inter-religious marriage and its effects on family unity among Christian couples in Southern Nigeria. The study intends to examine the causes of inter-religious marriage, identify its effects on family unity, and suggest possible ways of promoting peaceful coexistence and stability among interfaith families.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Inter-religious marriage has become increasingly common in many parts of Nigeria, especially in urban areas where people from different religious backgrounds interact freely through education, business, and social activities. In Southern Nigeria, many Christians now marry individuals from different religious faiths despite church teachings and traditional beliefs discouraging such unions. Although inter-religious marriage may promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence, it has also created several challenges affecting family unity among couples.

One of the major problems associated with inter-religious marriage is the frequent occurrence of misunderstandings and conflicts arising from differences in religious beliefs and practices. Couples from different religious backgrounds often disagree on issues such as worship patterns, child upbringing, celebration of religious festivals, and family values. These disagreements sometimes create tension and emotional distance between spouses, thereby weakening family unity.

Another problem is the pressure exerted by extended family members and religious communities on interfaith couples. In many cases, families disapprove of inter-religious unions and attempt to influence the religious decisions of the couple. Such interference often leads to arguments, mistrust, and instability within the home. Some spouses may also face pressure to convert to another religion against their personal convictions, thereby causing emotional frustration and dissatisfaction in marriage.

Furthermore, children from inter-religious homes may experience confusion concerning religious identity and spiritual direction. Parents may disagree on the religious training and moral upbringing of their children, resulting in inconsistent values and divided loyalty among family members. This situation may negatively affect the spiritual and emotional development of children within such homes.

Despite the increasing occurrence of inter-religious marriages in Southern Nigeria, there is still limited empirical research examining their specific effects on family unity among Christian couples. Many studies have focused generally on marriage and religion without adequately assessing how interfaith unions influence marital stability, communication, emotional bonding, and spiritual harmony in Christian homes.

In addition, some inter-religious marriages have experienced separation, domestic conflicts, and weakened family relationships due to unresolved religious differences. The persistence of these problems raises concern about the long-term effects of inter-religious marriage on peaceful family life and social stability. Therefore, there is a need to critically assess inter-religious marriage and its effects on family unity among Christian couples in Southern Nigeria.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to assess inter-religious marriage and its effects on family unity among Christian couples in Southern Nigeria.

The specific objectives are to:

1. examine the causes of inter-religious marriage among Christian couples in Southern Nigeria;
2. investigate the effects of inter-religious marriage on family unity among Christian couples;
3. identify the major challenges faced by couples in inter-religious marriages;
4. assess the influence of religious differences on child upbringing and family relationships;
5. suggest possible measures for promoting unity and peaceful coexistence in inter-religious marriages.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. What are the causes of inter-religious marriage among Christian couples in Southern Nigeria?
2. What effects does inter-religious marriage have on family unity?
3. What challenges are faced by couples in inter-religious marriages?
4. How do religious differences influence child upbringing and family relationships?
5. What measures can promote unity and peaceful coexistence in inter-religious marriages?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between inter-religious marriage and family unity among Christian couples in Southern Nigeria.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between inter-religious marriage and family unity among Christian couples in Southern Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to churches, marriage counsellors, Christian couples, researchers, religious leaders, and society at large. The findings of the study will help church leaders understand the challenges associated with inter-religious marriage and develop better counselling strategies for intending couples.

The study will also assist marriage counsellors in providing guidance on issues relating to religious compatibility, family unity, communication, and child upbringing among interfaith couples. Christian couples will benefit from the study through increased awareness of the possible effects of religious differences on marital relationships and family stability.

Researchers and students in Christian Religious Studies, sociology, and family studies will find the study useful as reference material for future academic research. The study will further contribute to promoting peaceful coexistence, religious tolerance, and stable family relationships within Nigerian society.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on inter-religious marriage and its effects on family unity among Christian couples in Southern Nigeria. The study will examine the causes, challenges, and effects of inter-religious marriage on family relationships, communication, child upbringing, and marital stability among selected Christian couples in Southern Nigeria.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Inter-Religious Marriage: A marital union between individuals from different religious backgrounds or faiths.

Family Unity: The peaceful coexistence, emotional bond, cooperation, and mutual understanding among family members.

Christian Couples: Married individuals who identify themselves as Christians.

Marriage: A legally, socially, and spiritually recognized union between a man and a woman.

Religion: A system of beliefs, worship, and moral practices relating to the worship of God or a supernatural being.

Southern Nigeria: The southern region of Nigeria comprising states predominantly occupied by Christian populations and diverse ethnic groups.
