INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Marriage is one of the oldest social institutions established for companionship, procreation, mutual support, and the continuity of society. Across cultures and religions, marriage is regarded as a sacred and socially recognized union between a man and a woman. In Nigeria, marriage occupies a central position in family life, cultural identity, and religious practice. It serves not only as a union between two individuals but also as a relationship that connects families, communities, and generations. The institution of marriage is therefore highly valued in both traditional African society and Christian religious teachings.

Traditional marriage practices in Nigeria refer to the cultural customs, rites, and ceremonies performed according to the traditions of various ethnic groups before a marriage is recognized by the community. These practices vary among ethnic groups such as the Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Ibibio, Tiv, and others, but they generally involve parental consent, payment of bride price, exchange of gifts, family negotiations, traditional blessings, and community celebrations. According to Nwosu (2018), traditional marriage practices reflect the cultural values, moral expectations, and social responsibilities attached to marriage in African society.

Before the introduction of Christianity and Western civilization, traditional marriage was the dominant form of marriage among Nigerian communities. Marriage was regarded as a communal affair rather than a private relationship between two individuals. Families played important roles in selecting marriage partners, settling disputes, and preserving family honor. Traditional marriage practices emphasized respect for elders, fertility, family unity, and social responsibility. In many communities, marriage was seen as a means of strengthening family ties and ensuring continuity of lineage.

With the arrival of Christianity through missionaries during the colonial period, Christian marriage doctrine gradually influenced the understanding and practice of marriage in Nigeria. Christian marriage doctrine refers to biblical teachings and principles concerning marriage as instituted by God. Christianity views marriage as a holy covenant characterized by love, faithfulness, unity, and lifelong commitment between husband and wife. Biblical passages such as Genesis 2:24 and Ephesians 5:22–33 emphasize mutual love, submission, respect, and spiritual unity within marriage.

Christian marriage doctrine differs from some traditional marriage practices in several ways. Christianity teaches monogamy as the ideal form of marriage, while some traditional Nigerian societies permit polygamy. Christian doctrine also discourages practices such as forced marriage, excessive bride price, wife inheritance, and certain traditional rituals considered inconsistent with biblical teachings. According to Adeyemi (2020), the interaction between traditional culture and Christian beliefs has created both cooperation and conflict in contemporary Nigerian marriage practices.

In contemporary Nigerian society, many couples combine elements of traditional marriage practices with Christian wedding ceremonies. It is common for couples to conduct traditional marriage rites before proceeding to church weddings. This combination reflects the importance Nigerians attach to both cultural identity and religious commitment. However, the coexistence of traditional practices and Christian doctrine has generated debates and controversies among scholars, religious leaders, and cultural custodians.

One major area of conflict concerns the issue of bride price. In many Nigerian cultures, payment of bride price is considered an important aspect of traditional marriage because it symbolizes appreciation and legitimizes the union. However, some Christian leaders criticize the commercialization of bride price, arguing that excessive financial demands place unnecessary pressure on intending couples and contradict Christian teachings on simplicity and love. Eze (2019) observed that the increasing commercialization of traditional marriage rites has contributed to delayed marriages and financial hardship among young people.

Another area of difference is polygamy. Traditional African societies in some regions permit a man to marry more than one wife for reasons such as fertility, social status, and labor support. In contrast, Christian doctrine strongly emphasizes monogamy and lifelong faithfulness between one husband and one wife. This difference has created tension among converts who attempt to reconcile cultural traditions with Christian teachings. According to Okonkwo and Samuel (2021), many Christians in Nigeria struggle to balance loyalty to cultural traditions with obedience to biblical principles on marriage.

Traditional marriage practices also involve certain rituals and ancestral customs that some Christian denominations consider incompatible with Christian faith. Practices such as libation, ancestral invocation, and traditional oaths during marriage ceremonies are sometimes discouraged by churches because they are perceived as conflicting with biblical teachings on worship and spirituality. Consequently, some Christian families experience disagreement concerning which marriage customs should be accepted or rejected.

Despite these differences, traditional marriage practices and Christian marriage doctrine share certain similarities. Both systems emphasize the importance of family, commitment, moral behavior, child upbringing, and social stability. Both traditional culture and Christianity encourage respect, responsibility, and peaceful coexistence within marriage. This suggests that traditional and Christian marriage systems are not entirely opposed but may complement each other in some aspects of family life.

Modernization, urbanization, education, and globalization have further influenced marriage practices in contemporary Nigerian society. Many young people now question certain traditional customs they consider outdated or financially burdensome. At the same time, increasing exposure to Western culture has affected attitudes toward marriage, gender roles, and family responsibilities. Some couples prioritize personal choice and romantic love over family approval and traditional obligations. These social changes have transformed both traditional and Christian approaches to marriage in Nigeria.

Furthermore, the rise in marital instability, divorce, domestic violence, and moral decline has raised concerns about the weakening of family values in Nigerian society. Some scholars argue that abandoning valuable traditional practices has contributed to the erosion of communal support and family discipline. Others believe that failure to uphold Christian marriage principles has weakened moral standards and marital commitment among couples. According to Yusuf (2022), the crisis facing contemporary marriages in Nigeria requires critical examination of both traditional and Christian perspectives on marriage.

The relationship between traditional marriage practices and Christian marriage doctrine remains an important issue in contemporary Nigerian society because both systems continue to influence marital relationships and family life. Understanding the similarities, differences, strengths, and weaknesses of these systems is necessary for promoting stable marriages, cultural harmony, and moral development in society.

It is against this background that this study seeks to undertake a comparative study of traditional marriage practices and Christian marriage doctrine in contemporary Nigerian society. The study aims to examine the similarities and differences between the two systems and assess their influence on marital relationships and family stability in Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Marriage in contemporary Nigerian society is increasingly influenced by both traditional cultural practices and Christian religious teachings. While traditional marriage practices continue to preserve cultural identity and communal values, Christian marriage doctrine emphasizes biblical principles such as monogamy, love, faithfulness, and spiritual unity. However, the coexistence of these two systems has created confusion, disagreement, and conflict among many couples and families in Nigeria.

One major problem is the conflict between certain traditional practices and Christian teachings on marriage. Practices such as polygamy, excessive bride price, wife inheritance, and some traditional rituals are often criticized by Christian leaders for being inconsistent with biblical doctrine. At the same time, some communities view rejection of traditional customs as disrespect for cultural heritage and family values. This situation has created tension between cultural loyalty and religious commitment among many Nigerian Christians.

Another problem is the increasing commercialization of traditional marriage practices in many parts of Nigeria. Excessive financial demands during bride price negotiations and marriage ceremonies have made marriage difficult for many young people. Some intending couples postpone marriage because they cannot meet traditional requirements imposed by families. This has contributed to cohabitation, delayed marriage, and marital instability in some communities.

Furthermore, many couples experience confusion concerning which marriage practices should guide their marital relationships. Some Christians participate in traditional rituals without fully understanding their spiritual implications, while others reject all cultural practices in favor of Westernized Christian weddings. This lack of balance between culture and religion has weakened understanding of marriage values and family responsibilities among some couples.

In addition, modernization and globalization have altered traditional family structures and moral values in Nigerian society. Younger generations increasingly challenge traditional authority and cultural expectations concerning marriage. At the same time, moral decline, divorce, infidelity, and domestic violence continue to rise despite the influence of Christianity and traditional culture. These developments raise concerns about the effectiveness of both traditional and Christian marriage systems in promoting stable homes and moral discipline.

Despite the importance of this issue, there is still inadequate empirical research comparing traditional marriage practices and Christian marriage doctrine in contemporary Nigerian society. Many existing studies focus mainly on either traditional marriage or Christian marriage separately without critically examining their similarities, differences, and combined influence on family life.

Therefore, this study seeks to comparatively examine traditional marriage practices and Christian marriage doctrine in contemporary Nigerian society in order to understand their contributions, areas of conflict, and implications for marital stability and family development.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to comparatively examine traditional marriage practices and Christian marriage doctrine in contemporary Nigerian society.

The specific objectives are to:

1. examine the major traditional marriage practices in Nigerian society;
2. analyze the principles of Christian marriage doctrine in contemporary society;
3. identify the similarities and differences between traditional marriage practices and Christian marriage doctrine;
4. assess the influence of traditional and Christian marriage systems on family stability and moral values;
5. suggest possible ways of harmonizing traditional marriage practices with Christian marriage doctrine in Nigeria.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

1. What are the major traditional marriage practices in Nigerian society?
2. What are the major principles of Christian marriage doctrine?
3. What similarities and differences exist between traditional marriage practices and Christian marriage doctrine?
4. How do traditional and Christian marriage systems influence family stability and moral values?
5. What measures can be adopted to harmonize traditional marriage practices with Christian marriage doctrine in Nigeria?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between traditional marriage practices and Christian marriage doctrine in contemporary Nigerian society.

H₁: There is a significant relationship between traditional marriage practices and Christian marriage doctrine in contemporary Nigerian society.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to religious leaders, traditional rulers, married couples, intending couples, researchers, and society at large. The findings of the study will help church leaders understand the relationship between cultural traditions and biblical teachings on marriage.

Traditional rulers and cultural custodians will also benefit from the study through increased understanding of the positive and negative effects of certain traditional marriage practices on contemporary family life. The study will assist intending couples in making informed decisions concerning marriage practices and responsibilities.

Furthermore, the study will contribute to academic knowledge in Christian Religious Studies, sociology, anthropology, and family studies. Researchers and students will find the study useful as reference material for future studies related to marriage and family life in Nigeria.

The study will also contribute to promoting peaceful coexistence, moral discipline, stable homes, and cultural harmony in contemporary Nigerian society.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on a comparative study of traditional marriage practices and Christian marriage doctrine in contemporary Nigerian society. The study will specifically examine traditional marriage customs, Christian teachings on marriage, areas of similarity and difference, and their influence on family life and marital stability in Nigeria.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Traditional Marriage Practices: Cultural customs, rites, and ceremonies performed according to the traditions of a particular ethnic group before marriage is recognized by the community.

Christian Marriage Doctrine: Biblical teachings and principles concerning marriage as instituted by God and practiced within Christianity.

Marriage: A socially, legally, and spiritually recognized union between a man and a woman.

Bride Price: Gifts or money presented by the groom’s family to the bride’s family as part of traditional marriage rites.

Polygamy: The practice of marrying more than one wife at the same time.

Family Stability: The ability of a family to maintain peace, unity, cooperation, and lasting relationships.

Contemporary Nigerian Society: Modern-day Nigerian society influenced by cultural traditions, religion, modernization, and globalization.
