INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Christian ethics is grounded in biblical principles that emphasize righteousness, justice, accountability, stewardship, and moral responsibility in both personal and public life. At its core, Christian ethical teaching insists that leadership is a divine responsibility that must reflect integrity, service, and accountability (Matthew 20:25–28). In political thought, this ethical framework provides a moral lens through which governance is evaluated, particularly in societies where religion significantly influences public life.

In Nigeria, Christianity remains one of the dominant religious traditions shaping moral reasoning and civic expectations. Despite this influence, the political landscape has continued to face persistent challenges such as corruption, abuse of power, weak institutions, and lack of accountability. According to Transparency International (2023), Nigeria continues to rank low on the Corruption Perception Index, reflecting widespread concerns about governance integrity and ethical leadership failures. This situation raises critical questions about the extent to which Christian ethical values have influenced political leadership behaviour in the country.

From a theological standpoint, Christian ethics demands that leaders act as servants of the people, promoting justice, fairness, and the common good. However, the disconnect between professed religious identity and actual political conduct has become a major concern among scholars of religion and governance. Studies have shown that despite the high level of religious participation in Nigeria, there is limited evidence that religious values consistently translate into ethical governance outcomes (Akinwale, 2021; Ojo, 2022).

Furthermore, moral accountability in governance refers to the obligation of political leaders to justify their actions in accordance with ethical standards, legal frameworks, and public expectations. In Christian theology, accountability extends beyond human institutions to divine judgement, thereby making ethical leadership not only a civic duty but also a spiritual responsibility. However, the Nigerian political environment often reflects weak accountability mechanisms, where public office is frequently viewed as an avenue for personal enrichment rather than public service (World Bank, 2022).

This study therefore situates Christian ethics within the broader discourse of political leadership in Nigeria, examining how theological principles of moral accountability can be used to evaluate and potentially reform governance practices.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the strong presence of Christianity in Nigeria and the widespread preaching of ethical values such as honesty, integrity, justice, and accountability, the political system continues to experience deep-rooted ethical challenges. These include corruption, mismanagement of public funds, electoral malpractice, nepotism, and lack of transparency in decision-making processes. This contradiction between religious moral instruction and political behaviour presents a major intellectual and practical problem.

Christian leaders and religious institutions frequently emphasize moral responsibility in governance, yet many political actors who publicly identify as Christians are often implicated in unethical practices. This raises a critical concern about the effectiveness of Christian ethical teachings in shaping the moral conduct of political leaders in Nigeria.

Furthermore, existing governance structures appear weak in enforcing accountability, thereby allowing unethical behaviour to persist with limited consequences. The gap between theological moral expectations and political realities suggests that Christian ethics may not be sufficiently integrated into Nigeria’s governance framework, or that its influence is being undermined by systemic and institutional weaknesses.

This study therefore addresses the problem of whether Christian ethical principles meaningfully influence political leadership behaviour in Nigeria and how moral accountability is understood, applied, or neglected within governance structures.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The aim of this study is to critically evaluate Christian ethics in relation to political leadership in Nigeria, with a focus on moral accountability in governance.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

1. To examine the principles of Christian ethics as they relate to leadership and governance.
2. To assess the level of moral accountability among political leaders in Nigeria.
3. To evaluate the influence of Christian ethical teachings on political leadership behaviour.
4. To identify the challenges limiting ethical governance in Nigeria.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between Christian ethical principles and moral accountability in political leadership in Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant in several ways. First, it contributes to theological scholarship by linking Christian ethics with contemporary governance challenges in Nigeria. It also provides insights for political leaders on the importance of integrating moral responsibility into public administration.

Second, the study is valuable to religious institutions, particularly churches, as it highlights the need for more effective ethical formation of individuals who enter political office. It emphasizes the role of faith-based moral teaching in shaping public behaviour.

Third, it benefits policymakers and governance institutions by identifying gaps in accountability mechanisms and suggesting the need for stronger ethical frameworks in public service.

Finally, the study serves as a reference point for students and researchers in theology, political science, and ethics who are interested in the intersection of religion and governance.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on Christian ethics and political leadership in Nigeria, with particular attention to moral accountability in governance. It examines theological principles, leadership behaviour, and governance practices within the Nigerian political context.
