INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors of the Nigerian economy, contributing significantly to food production, employment generation, poverty reduction, and rural development. The livestock subsector, particularly poultry production, plays a critical role in enhancing food security through the provision of affordable animal protein and income for millions of households. Among poultry enterprises, broiler production has gained increasing importance because of its short production cycle, rapid turnover rate, and growing demand for poultry meat among consumers. Broiler production contributes substantially to national food supply and serves as a major source of livelihood for farmers across Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Climate change has become one of the most significant threats to agricultural production worldwide. In Nigeria, rising temperatures, irregular rainfall patterns, prolonged heat waves, flooding, and other climate-related events have increasingly affected the performance of agricultural enterprises. The poultry industry, particularly broiler production, is highly vulnerable to these climatic changes because birds require specific environmental conditions for optimal growth and productivity. Deviations from these conditions often result in reduced feed intake, poor growth performance, disease outbreaks, and increased mortality rates.
Broiler producers in Southwestern Nigeria are increasingly confronted with climate-related challenges that threaten the sustainability of their enterprises. Existing studies have largely focused on adaptation practices and technical efficiency, with little emphasis on how adaptation influences productivity and profitability outcomes. This gap in knowledge limits the ability of policymakers, extension agents, and poultry farmers to make informed decisions regarding climate adaptation investments.
Therefore, this study seeks to analyze the climate change adaptation strategies adopted by broiler producers in Southwestern Nigeria and determine their effects on productivity and profitability. The findings will provide empirical evidence for designing policies and interventions aimed at enhancing climate resilience and sustainable broiler production.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The broad objective of this study is to analyze climate change adaptation strategies and their effects on the productivity and profitability of broiler production enterprises in Southwestern Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:
- examine the socio-economic characteristics of broiler producers in Southwestern Nigeria;
- identify the climate change adaptation strategies adopted by broiler producers;
- determine the factors influencing the adoption of climate change adaptation strategies;
- assess the effects of adaptation strategies on broiler productivity;

H₀: Climate change adaptation strategies have no significant effect on the productivity and profitability of broiler production enterprises in Southwestern Nigeria.

The findings of this study will be beneficial to broiler producers, policymakers, agricultural extension agents, researchers, financial institutions, and development organizations. The study will provide information on effective climate adaptation strategies capable of enhancing productivity and profitability among broiler producers.
The study will assist government agencies in formulating policies aimed at promoting climate-smart poultry production and strengthening resilience within the livestock sector. Extension personnel will benefit from the findings through improved understanding of adaptation practices suitable for dissemination among poultry farmers.
Researchers and academic institutions will benefit from the study as it will contribute to the existing literature on climate change adaptation and poultry economics in Nigeria. Furthermore, financial institutions and development agencies will gain insights necessary for designing support programmes and investment packages targeted at climate-resilient poultry production.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the economic analysis of climate change adaptation strategies and their effects on the productivity and profitability of broiler production enterprises in Southwestern Nigeria. The study covers broiler producers operating within selected states in the Southwestern geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Emphasis is placed on adaptation strategies, productivity outcomes, profitability indicators, adoption determinants, and constraints associated with climate change adaptation.

Climate Change: Long-term alterations in temperature, rainfall, humidity, and other climatic conditions affecting agricultural production.
