Project – Influence of Family Counselling on Students’ Academic Achievement and Behavioural Adjustment: A Case Study of Secondary Schools in Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State, Nigeria

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education is widely recognized as a fundamental instrument for personal development, social mobility, and national growth. The success of every educational system depends largely on the academic achievement and behavioural adjustment of students. Academic achievement refers to the extent to which students attain educational objectives measured through examinations, tests, and other assessment procedures. Behavioural adjustment, on the other hand, refers to the ability of students to adapt positively to school rules, social expectations, interpersonal relationships, and emotional demands within their learning environment. Students who demonstrate good behavioural adjustment are more likely to achieve academic success because they exhibit self-discipline, emotional stability, and positive social interactions (Wakeh & Omoegun, 2021).

The family remains the primary social institution responsible for the emotional, psychological, moral, and educational development of children. From birth, children depend on their families for guidance, care, protection, and socialization. The quality of family relationships significantly influences children’s attitudes toward learning, school participation, and behavioural outcomes. Research has shown that supportive family environments contribute positively to students’ academic performance, while dysfunctional family environments often result in poor academic achievement, emotional distress, and behavioural problems (Marah, Fute, & Kangwa, 2025).

In contemporary society, families face numerous challenges such as marital conflicts, economic hardship, parental separation, domestic violence, poor communication, and ineffective parenting practices. These challenges often create stressful home environments that adversely affect children’s emotional wellbeing and educational outcomes. Students from such homes may experience anxiety, depression, aggression, truancy, low self-esteem, and poor concentration in school activities. Consequently, their academic achievement and behavioural adjustment become negatively affected (Alabi et al., 2021).

Family counselling has emerged as an important intervention strategy for addressing family-related challenges that affect children’s development. Family counselling is a professional helping process designed to improve communication, strengthen relationships, resolve conflicts, and promote healthy functioning among family members. Through counselling sessions, family members learn effective communication skills, problem-solving techniques, emotional regulation strategies, and positive parenting practices that contribute to the wellbeing of children and adolescents.

The theoretical foundation of family counselling is based on the assumption that the family functions as an interconnected system where the behaviour of one member affects the entire family unit. Therefore, problems experienced by students may not solely originate from the individual but may be linked to family interactions and dynamics. Counsellors work with family members collectively to identify dysfunctional patterns and develop healthier ways of relating to one another. This approach enhances the emotional and psychological support available to students.

Studies have consistently demonstrated that positive family functioning contributes significantly to students’ educational outcomes. Family cohesion, parental involvement, emotional support, and effective communication have been found to enhance students’ motivation, self-confidence, academic engagement, and social adjustment. Conversely, family dysfunction has been associated with behavioural maladjustment and poor academic performance among adolescents (Ohuakanwa, 2026).

Behavioural adjustment is a critical factor in students’ educational success. Students who are behaviourally adjusted tend to comply with school regulations, maintain healthy peer relationships, participate actively in classroom activities, and manage their emotions effectively. Such students are better positioned to concentrate on academic tasks and achieve higher educational outcomes. In contrast, behaviourally maladjusted students often engage in disruptive behaviours, absenteeism, aggression, and other forms of misconduct that negatively affect their learning experiences.

Secondary school students are particularly vulnerable to behavioural and emotional challenges because adolescence is characterized by rapid physical, cognitive, social, and emotional changes. During this developmental stage, students face pressures relating to identity formation, peer acceptance, academic expectations, and family relationships. Without adequate family support and guidance, many adolescents experience difficulties adjusting to these challenges, which may hinder their academic progress.

Family counselling plays a crucial role in helping parents understand adolescent developmental needs and adopt effective parenting strategies. Through counselling, parents learn how to provide emotional support, monitor academic activities, establish appropriate discipline, and create conducive home environments for learning. These practices foster positive behavioural outcomes and academic success among students.

The importance of counselling interventions in promoting students’ adjustment has been highlighted in various educational studies. Egbule (2021) reported that counselling services significantly improve students’ social and emotional adjustment in secondary schools by helping them develop coping skills and positive behavioural patterns. Likewise, counselling programmes have been associated with improved academic performance among secondary school students in Delta State, Nigeria (Egbule, 2023).

Research on family functioning and emotional adjustment among adolescents has shown that healthy family relationships significantly influence students’ psychological wellbeing. Adeniji and Akindele-Oscar (2021) found that family functioning plays a significant role in adolescents’ emotional adjustment, emphasizing the importance of family-based interventions in addressing students’ psychosocial challenges.

Similarly, studies on family structure and academic adjustment indicate that family characteristics influence students’ educational experiences. Esuabana et al. (2022) observed that family type significantly affects students’ academic adjustment and recommended counselling interventions to help students cope with family-related challenges.

Recent studies have further demonstrated the importance of family factors in students’ educational development. Research conducted among secondary school students in Bayelsa and Delta States revealed that family power structures significantly influence students’ academic achievement, suggesting that family relationships and decision-making patterns affect educational outcomes (Omgbou & Okumbiri, 2025).

In addition, family background has been identified as a significant determinant of academic achievement among secondary school students in Nigeria. Counselling scholars have emphasized the need for interventions that strengthen family support systems to enhance students’ academic outcomes (Ogwa, 2025).

Within Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, concerns have been raised regarding declining academic performance, increasing indiscipline, examination malpractice, truancy, bullying, substance abuse, and other behavioural challenges among secondary school students. Many educators and counsellors attribute these problems partly to family-related issues such as poor parental supervision, family conflict, economic stress, and ineffective communication between parents and children.

Despite the recognized importance of family counselling, empirical studies specifically examining its influence on students’ academic achievement and behavioural adjustment in Isoko South Local Government Area remain limited. Most existing studies have focused on school counselling, peer counselling, family background, or general family dynamics without directly investigating family counselling as an intervention strategy.

Given the growing behavioural and academic challenges among secondary school students and the central role of the family in child development, there is a need to investigate the influence of family counselling on students’ academic achievement and behavioural adjustment. This study therefore seeks to examine the influence of family counselling on students’ academic achievement and behavioural adjustment in secondary schools in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The family serves as the first environment where children acquire values, attitudes, behavioural patterns, and learning habits that influence their future educational experiences. Ideally, families are expected to provide emotional support, academic encouragement, effective supervision, and moral guidance necessary for students’ overall development. However, the increasing prevalence of family conflicts, parental separation, economic difficulties, domestic violence, ineffective parenting practices, and poor communication within many homes has created significant challenges for students’ academic and behavioural development.

In recent years, secondary schools in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State have witnessed various behavioural problems among students, including truancy, indiscipline, aggression, examination malpractice, bullying, poor interpersonal relationships, and lack of respect for school regulations. At the same time, many students continue to perform below expectations academically despite efforts by teachers and school administrators to improve educational outcomes.

Evidence from previous studies suggests that family-related factors significantly influence students’ academic achievement and behavioural adjustment. Students exposed to unstable family environments often experience emotional stress, poor concentration, low motivation, and behavioural difficulties that negatively affect their academic performance. Furthermore, poor family functioning has been associated with inadequate social and emotional adjustment among adolescents.

Although family counselling has been recognized as an effective intervention for improving family relationships, reducing conflicts, and enhancing children’s development, there is limited empirical evidence regarding its specific influence on students’ academic achievement and behavioural adjustment in secondary schools within Isoko South Local Government Area. Most counselling programmes in schools focus primarily on individual students without adequately addressing family-related issues that contribute to academic and behavioural problems.

The problem of this study therefore is to determine whether family counselling significantly influences students’ academic achievement and behavioural adjustment in secondary schools in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria.
