INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education globally has continued to evolve in response to technological advancement, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become a major driver of transformation in teaching and learning processes. ICT integration in education refers to the use of digital tools such as computers, internet resources, interactive whiteboards, educational software, and mobile devices to enhance instructional delivery and learning outcomes. According to UNESCO (2023), ICT integration in education promotes inclusive learning, improves access to information, and enhances students’ engagement and achievement when effectively implemented.
In contemporary educational practice, ICT is no longer viewed as an optional supplement but as an essential component of effective pedagogy. It supports interactive learning environments where students can actively participate in lessons, collaborate with peers, and access diverse learning materials beyond the traditional classroom. OECD (2023) emphasized that ICT-supported instruction improves students’ motivation, engagement, and academic performance when teachers are adequately trained and infrastructure is available.
In Nigeria, the integration of ICT into secondary school education has been emphasized through national educational policies. The Federal Republic of Nigeria (2014) highlighted ICT as a key tool for improving educational quality and ensuring that learners are equipped with 21st-century skills. Despite this policy direction, the level of ICT integration in many public secondary schools remains relatively low due to challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, poor funding, limited teacher training, and unreliable power supply.
Academic engagement refers to the level of interest, participation, and emotional commitment students demonstrate toward learning activities. Fredricks, Blumenfeld, and Paris (2020) describe academic engagement as a multidimensional construct involving behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. When ICT is effectively integrated into teaching, it enhances students’ attention, motivation, and participation in classroom activities.
Students’ academic performance, on the other hand, refers to measurable outcomes such as test scores, examination results, and overall academic achievement. Studies have shown that ICT-supported instruction can improve academic performance by providing personalized learning experiences and immediate feedback (OECD, 2023). However, the effectiveness of ICT integration depends on how well it is implemented within specific educational contexts.
In Ikorodu, Lagos State, secondary schools have begun adopting ICT tools in teaching and learning, especially in urban and semi-urban areas. However, the extent of integration varies significantly across schools. While some schools have access to computer laboratories and internet facilities, others still rely on traditional chalk-and-talk methods due to infrastructural constraints. This disparity raises concerns about the actual impact of ICT integration on students’ academic engagement and performance.
Therefore, this study investigates the integration of ICT in teaching and learning and its effects on students’ academic engagement and performance in secondary schools in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the global recognition of ICT as a powerful tool for improving education, its integration into teaching and learning in Nigerian secondary schools remains inconsistent and underdeveloped. In Ikorodu, Lagos State, while some schools have introduced ICT tools into classroom instruction, many others still face significant barriers that limit effective implementation.
One major challenge is inadequate ICT infrastructure. Many public secondary schools lack functional computer laboratories, stable internet connectivity, and modern teaching equipment. This limits teachers’ ability to effectively integrate ICT into lesson delivery. According to UNESCO (2023), infrastructural gaps remain one of the most significant barriers to ICT adoption in developing countries.
Another challenge is the limited ICT competence among teachers. Studies have shown that many teachers lack adequate training in the use of digital tools for instructional purposes, which affects their confidence and willingness to integrate ICT into classroom teaching (Eze & Uzochukwu, 2023). As a result, ICT tools are often underutilized even where they are available.
Furthermore, students’ academic engagement in many secondary schools in Ikorodu remains low, characterized by poor participation, lack of interest, and minimal interaction during lessons. Traditional teaching methods, which are still widely used, do not fully encourage active learning compared to ICT-supported instruction. This raises questions about whether ICT integration can significantly improve students’ engagement and academic performance in the area.
There is also a gap in empirical studies focusing specifically on secondary schools in Ikorodu, Lagos State, regarding the relationship between ICT integration, academic engagement, and academic performance. Most existing studies are generalized at national or regional levels, leaving a contextual gap that this study aims to address.
It is against this background that this study seeks to examine the effects of ICT integration in teaching and learning on students’ academic engagement and performance in secondary schools in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the effects of ICT integration in teaching and learning on students’ academic engagement and performance in secondary schools in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
- Determine the extent of ICT integration in teaching and learning in secondary schools in Ikorodu.
- Identify the ICT tools used in instructional delivery.
- Examine the effects of ICT integration on students’ academic engagement.

1.5 Hypothesis
H₀: There is no significant relationship between ICT integration in teaching and learning and students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between ICT integration in teaching and learning and students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on ICT integration in teaching and learning and its effects on students’ academic engagement and performance in secondary schools in Ikorodu, Lagos State. The study covers selected public secondary schools, teachers, and students within the Ikorodu area. It focuses on ICT tools such as computers, projectors, internet resources, and educational software used for instructional purposes.
1.7 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be significant to:
