Project – Peer Pressure and Its Influence on Risky Behaviour among Adolescents in Public Secondary Schools in Enugu State

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Adolescence is a critical developmental stage characterized by rapid physical, psychological, emotional, and social changes. During this period, individuals are highly influenced by their social environment as they gradually shift from parental dependence toward peer association. One of the most significant social forces shaping adolescent behaviour is peer pressure. Peer pressure refers to the influence exerted by a peer group to encourage individuals to change their attitudes, values, or behaviours in order to conform to group norms (Brown & Larson, 2020).

In contemporary society, adolescents are increasingly exposed to both positive and negative peer influences. While positive peer pressure can encourage academic achievement, discipline, and social adjustment, negative peer pressure often leads to risky behaviours such as substance abuse, truancy, cultism, bullying, sexual promiscuity, examination malpractice, and delinquency. These behaviours not only affect academic performance but also pose serious threats to adolescents’ physical and psychological well-being (Steinberg, 2021).

The school environment serves as a major socialization agent where peer interactions are intensified. In public secondary schools, students spend significant time with peers, making them more vulnerable to peer influence. According to UNESCO (2023), peer relationships within school settings significantly shape adolescents’ decision-making processes and behavioural patterns. When peer groups normalize deviant behaviour, adolescents may feel compelled to conform in order to gain acceptance and avoid rejection.

In Nigeria, especially in states like Enugu, increasing cases of adolescent risky behaviour have been linked to peer influence. Reports from educational stakeholders indicate rising incidents of drug abuse, examination malpractice, gang involvement, and indiscipline among secondary school students. These behaviours are often reinforced by peer groups that encourage risk-taking and deviance as a means of social acceptance (UNICEF Nigeria, 2023).

Social Learning Theory by Bandura further explains that adolescents learn behaviours through observation, imitation, and reinforcement from their peers. When risky behaviours are rewarded with social approval or acceptance within peer groups, adolescents are more likely to adopt such behaviours. Conversely, when positive behaviours are reinforced, adolescents tend to develop socially acceptable habits (Bandura, 1977).

Given the increasing concern about adolescent behavioural problems in public secondary schools in Enugu State, it becomes necessary to examine the influence of peer pressure on risky behaviour among adolescents. Understanding this relationship will help educators, parents, and policymakers develop effective intervention strategies to promote positive behaviour among students.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts by schools, parents, and government agencies to promote discipline and moral behaviour among adolescents, there has been a persistent rise in risky behaviours among secondary school students in Enugu State. These behaviours include substance abuse, bullying, truancy, cultism, examination malpractice, and sexual misconduct. Such behaviours negatively affect students’ academic performance, social development, and future prospects.

One major concern is that adolescents, particularly in public secondary schools, appear to be highly influenced by their peer groups. Many students engage in risky behaviours not necessarily because of personal inclination, but due to pressure to conform to peer expectations. Peer groups often encourage behaviours that violate school rules and societal norms, making it difficult for students to resist such influence.

Although previous studies have examined adolescent behaviour from the perspectives of parenting, school environment, and socio-economic factors, less attention has been given to the specific role of peer pressure in influencing risky behaviour among adolescents in Enugu State. This creates a gap in knowledge regarding the extent to which peer influence contributes to behavioural challenges among students.

If this problem is not properly addressed, the continued rise in risky behaviour may lead to increased school dropout rates, poor academic performance, youth violence, and long-term social instability. Therefore, it becomes essential to investigate how peer pressure influences risky behaviour among adolescents in public secondary schools in Enugu State.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of peer pressure on risky behaviour among adolescents in public secondary schools in Enugu State.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

  1. Determine the relationship between peer pressure and substance abuse among adolescents.
  2. Examine the relationship between peer pressure and truancy among adolescents.
  3. Investigate the relationship between peer pressure and bullying behaviour among adolescents.
  4. Determine the relationship between peer pressure and sexual risky behaviour among adolescents.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions guide the study:

  1. What is the relationship between peer pressure and substance abuse among adolescents?
  2. What is the relationship between peer pressure and truancy among adolescents?
  3. What is the relationship between peer pressure and bullying behaviour among adolescents?
  4. What is the relationship between peer pressure and sexual risky behaviour among adolescents?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: Peer pressure does not significantly influence risky behaviour among adolescents in public secondary schools in Enugu State.
H₁: Peer pressure significantly influences risky behaviour among adolescents in public secondary schools in Enugu State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be beneficial to students, parents, teachers, school counsellors, educational administrators, policymakers, and researchers.

Students will benefit by becoming more aware of the negative effects of peer pressure and developing strategies to resist involvement in risky behaviours. Parents will gain insight into how peer influence affects adolescent behaviour and will be better positioned to guide their children effectively.

Teachers will better understand the behavioural challenges caused by peer influence and will improve classroom management strategies. School counsellors will use the findings to design effective intervention and counselling programmes aimed at reducing risky behaviours among students.

Educational administrators and policymakers will use the findings to develop policies and school-based programmes that discourage negative peer influence. Researchers will also benefit from the study as it will provide empirical literature for future studies on peer pressure and adolescent behaviour.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to public secondary school students in Enugu State. It focuses specifically on peer pressure as the independent variable and risky behaviour (substance abuse, truancy, bullying, and sexual misconduct) as the dependent variable. The study does not extend to private schools or other states in Nigeria.

1.8 Definition of Terms

Peer Pressure:
Peer pressure refers to the influence exerted by a group of friends or classmates on an individual to conform to their attitudes, values, or behaviours. It may be positive or negative, but in this study, it mainly refers to negative influence that leads adolescents to engage in risky behaviours (Brown & Larson, 2020).

Adolescents:
Adolescents are individuals typically within the age range of 10 to 19 years who are undergoing physical, emotional, psychological, and social development from childhood to adulthood (World Health Organization, 2024).

Risky Behaviour:
Risky behaviour refers to actions that expose individuals to physical, emotional, social, or academic harm. In this study, it includes behaviours such as substance abuse, truancy, bullying, cultism, and sexual misconduct among secondary school students.

Substance Abuse:
Substance abuse is the excessive or harmful use of psychoactive substances such as alcohol, drugs, or inhalants, which can negatively affect an individual’s health, behaviour, and academic performance (UNODC, 2023).

Truancy:
Truancy refers to the act of deliberately absenting oneself from school without permission or valid reason. It is considered a form of antisocial behaviour that negatively affects academic performance and discipline.

Bullying:
Bullying is the repeated aggressive behaviour intended to cause harm, intimidation, or distress to another student. It may be physical, verbal, or psychological in nature (UNESCO, 2023).

Sexual Risk Behaviour:
Sexual risk behaviour refers to unsafe or inappropriate sexual activities that may expose adolescents to health risks such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), teenage pregnancy, and emotional trauma.

Secondary School Students:
Secondary school students are learners enrolled in post-primary education institutions, typically between Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) levels.

Public Secondary Schools:
Public secondary schools are government-owned and funded educational institutions that provide secondary education to students at reduced or no tuition cost.

Risky Behaviour among Adolescents:
This refers to the overall engagement of adolescents in harmful actions such as drug use, violence, truancy, and other forms of misconduct influenced by peer interaction and environmental factors.
