INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Churches, as faith-based non-profit organisations, play significant spiritual, social, and economic roles in society. In addition to their primary spiritual mandate, modern churches operate as complex organisations requiring structured financial management systems to sustain their activities, including evangelism, welfare programmes, infrastructure development, and administrative operations. One of the most critical aspects of church administration is budgeting, which serves as a financial blueprint for allocating resources and ensuring accountability in the use of church funds.

Budgeting in church management refers to the systematic planning, allocation, and control of expected income and expenditures within a defined period. It is a key instrument for financial stewardship and sustainability, especially in large urban centres such as Ikeja, Lagos, where churches experience fluctuating membership and diverse financial inflows from tithes, offerings, donations, and special projects. Effective budgeting enables churches to align financial resources with ministry priorities, reduce waste, and ensure transparency in financial operations. It is against this background that this study seeks to examine budgeting practices and financial sustainability of churches in Ikeja, Lagos, with a view to providing empirical insights that can enhance effective financial management in church organisations.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to examine budgeting practices and financial sustainability of churches in Ikeja, Lagos.

The specific objectives are to:

1. examine the extent of budgeting practices adopted by churches in Ikeja, Lagos;
2. assess the level of financial sustainability of churches in Ikeja, Lagos;
3. determine the relationship between budgeting practices and financial sustainability of churches in Ikeja, Lagos.

1.4 Research Questions

The study is guided by the following research questions:

1. What is the extent of budgeting practices adopted by churches in Ikeja, Lagos?
2. What is the level of financial sustainability of churches in Ikeja, Lagos?
3. What relationship exists between budgeting practices and financial sustainability of churches in Ikeja, Lagos?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between budgeting practices and financial sustainability of churches in Ikeja, Lagos.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between budgeting practices and financial sustainability of churches in Ikeja, Lagos.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to church administrators, pastors, and financial officers by providing insights into effective budgeting practices that enhance financial sustainability. It will also assist church members in understanding how financial resources are managed within their organisations, thereby promoting transparency and accountability.

Additionally, the study will contribute to academic literature on church administration and financial management in non-profit organisations, serving as a reference for future researchers interested in religious financial governance and organisational sustainability.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on budgeting practices and financial sustainability of churches in Ikeja, Lagos State. It is limited to selected churches within Ikeja and examines financial management practices such as budgeting processes, expenditure control, and financial planning in relation to sustainability outcomes.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
