Project – School Climate, Teacher Motivation, and Students’ Academic Engagement in Public Secondary Schools in Nigeria

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Education is widely recognized as a powerful instrument for national development, social transformation, and human capital development. It equips learners with knowledge, skills, values, and competencies necessary for effective participation in society. In secondary education, which serves as a bridge between basic and higher education, the quality of learning outcomes is strongly influenced by the environment in which teaching and learning take place. One of the most important determinants of this environment is school climate.

School climate refers to the overall quality and character of school life, including the norms, relationships, teaching and learning practices, safety, and organizational structure within a school. It reflects how students, teachers, and administrators perceive their school environment. A positive school climate promotes respect, safety, engagement, and academic success, while a negative climate is associated with low motivation, poor discipline, and reduced academic performance (OECD, 2020; ).

Closely linked to school climate is teacher motivation, which refers to the internal and external factors that stimulate teachers to perform their duties effectively. Motivated teachers are more committed, enthusiastic, and productive in their instructional roles. According to recent studies in Nigerian secondary schools, teacher motivation is significantly influenced by recognition, supportive leadership, working conditions, and professional development opportunities (). When teachers are well motivated, they are more likely to create engaging learning environments that enhance students’ academic engagement.

Another key concept in this study is students’ academic engagement, which refers to the degree of attention, interest, participation, and effort students demonstrate in learning activities. Academic engagement is a strong predictor of academic success because engaged students are more likely to attend classes regularly, participate actively, complete assignments, and achieve better learning outcomes (Fredricks, Blumenfeld, & Paris, 2004; Wang et al., 2020). Engagement is influenced not only by students’ individual characteristics but also by classroom environment, teacher behaviour, and school climate.

The relationship among school climate, teacher motivation, and students’ academic engagement has become an important area of educational research globally. A supportive school climate enhances teacher motivation, which in turn improves instructional quality and increases student engagement. Studies have shown that schools with positive climates tend to have higher levels of student participation and academic achievement because teachers are more motivated and better supported ().

In Nigeria, however, the educational system continues to face several challenges that negatively affect school climate and teacher motivation. These include inadequate infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, insufficient teaching materials, low remuneration, and limited professional development opportunities for teachers. These factors contribute to low teacher morale, which subsequently affects students’ engagement and academic performance.

Furthermore, in many public secondary schools across Nigeria, school climate is often characterized by poor interpersonal relationships, weak administrative support, and disciplinary challenges among students. Such environments reduce teachers’ effectiveness and discourage active student participation in learning activities. Research indicates that when teachers perceive their working environment as unsupportive, their motivation declines, leading to reduced instructional quality and lower student engagement levels (UNESCO, 2021).

Student engagement in Nigerian secondary schools is also affected by socio-economic and environmental factors such as poverty, lack of learning resources, and limited parental support. Many students show low academic interest, irregular attendance, and minimal participation in classroom activities. This trend has raised concerns among educators and policymakers regarding the overall effectiveness of secondary education in the country.

Given the interconnected nature of school climate, teacher motivation, and students’ academic engagement, it is important to examine how these variables interact within the Nigerian context. Understanding these relationships will help in designing policies and interventions that improve teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes. Therefore, this study investigates school climate, teacher motivation, and students’ academic engagement in public secondary schools in Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role of education in national development, the quality of learning outcomes in many public secondary schools in Nigeria remains a major concern. One of the key challenges is the declining level of students’ academic engagement, which manifests in poor class participation, irregular attendance, lack of interest in learning, and low academic achievement.

School climate, which is expected to provide a supportive and conducive environment for teaching and learning, is often weak in many Nigerian public secondary schools. Reports suggest that many schools experience issues such as overcrowded classrooms, poor infrastructure, inadequate teaching resources, and weak interpersonal relationships among teachers, students, and school administrators. These conditions negatively affect the overall learning environment and reduce students’ engagement in academic activities (OECD, 2020).

In addition, teacher motivation has become a growing concern in the Nigerian education system. Many teachers face challenges such as delayed salaries, lack of recognition, poor working conditions, and limited opportunities for professional growth. These factors contribute to low morale and reduced commitment to instructional duties. Studies have shown that teacher motivation is a key determinant of instructional quality and student engagement ().

When teachers are poorly motivated, their ability to create engaging and stimulating learning environments is compromised. This often leads to reduced student interest, passive learning, and low academic participation. Conversely, motivated teachers are more likely to foster positive classroom environments that encourage student involvement and active learning.

Furthermore, despite various educational reforms in Nigeria aimed at improving school quality, there is still limited empirical evidence on how school climate and teacher motivation jointly influence students’ academic engagement. Most existing studies have focused on academic achievement alone, with less attention given to engagement as a behavioural and psychological construct.

In addition, there is a contextual gap in literature regarding how these variables interact within public secondary schools across different regions of Nigeria. This makes it difficult for policymakers and educational administrators to design targeted interventions that address the root causes of low student engagement.

The problem of this study therefore lies in the persistent low level of students’ academic engagement in public secondary schools in Nigeria and the unclear extent to which school climate and teacher motivation contribute to this situation. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the relationship among school climate, teacher motivation, and students’ academic engagement.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine school climate, teacher motivation, and students’ academic engagement in public secondary schools in Nigeria.

Specifically, the study aims to:

  1. assess the level of school climate in public secondary schools;
  2. examine the level of teacher motivation in public secondary schools;
  3. determine the level of students’ academic engagement;
  4. examine the relationship between school climate and students’ academic engagement;
  5. determine the influence of teacher motivation on students’ academic engagement.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What is the level of school climate in public secondary schools in Nigeria?
  2. What is the level of teacher motivation in public secondary schools?
  3. What is the level of students’ academic engagement?
  4. What is the relationship between school climate and students’ academic engagement?
  5. What is the influence of teacher motivation on students’ academic engagement?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: There is no significant relationship between school climate, teacher motivation, and students’ academic engagement in public secondary schools in Nigeria (OECD, 2020; Wang et al., 2020).

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to school administrators, teachers, policymakers, and researchers. School administrators will gain insights into how improving school climate can enhance teacher motivation and student engagement. Teachers will understand how motivational factors influence their effectiveness and classroom interaction with students.

Education policymakers will use the findings to develop strategies aimed at improving school environments and teacher welfare. The study will also contribute to existing literature on educational effectiveness, particularly in the Nigerian context, and serve as a reference for future researchers.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on school climate, teacher motivation, and students’ academic engagement in public secondary schools in Nigeria. It examines key dimensions such as school environment, leadership support, teacher welfare, and student participation in learning activities.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

School Climate: The overall quality of school life, including relationships, safety, teaching environment, and organizational structure.
