INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Giving has remained one of the central practices within religious communities throughout human history. Across various religious traditions, acts of generosity, charity, and material contribution have been understood as expressions of devotion, gratitude, communal responsibility, and commitment to religious values. Within Christianity, giving occupies a significant theological position because it is closely connected to concepts such as stewardship, worship, sacrifice, love for God, and concern for others. From the Old Testament traditions of tithing and offerings to the New Testament emphasis on voluntary generosity and care for the needy, financial giving has continued to shape the identity and practices of Christian communities (Blomberg, 2013).

In biblical theology, giving is presented not merely as a financial obligation but as a spiritual practice reflecting the relationship between God and humanity. The Old Testament provides several examples of structured giving, including tithes, first fruits, sacrifices, and offerings for religious purposes and community welfare. The Mosaic Law required Israelites to give portions of their agricultural and economic resources to support the Levitical priesthood, religious activities, and vulnerable members of society, including widows, orphans, and foreigners (Deuteronomy 14:28–29; Leviticus 27:30–33). These practices demonstrate that biblical giving served both religious and social purposes by sustaining worship and promoting communal responsibility.

The concept of tithing, which involves giving one-tenth of income or resources, has historically occupied an important place in Christian discussions about financial stewardship. While some Christian traditions interpret Old Testament tithing as a continuing obligation for believers, others view New Testament giving as moving beyond fixed percentages toward voluntary, generous, and sacrificial contributions motivated by love and faith. Scholars such as Wright (2010) argue that biblical stewardship should be understood within the broader framework of responsible management of God’s resources rather than merely fulfilling a financial requirement.

The New Testament presents giving primarily as an expression of grace, generosity, and love. Jesus frequently addressed issues related to wealth, possessions, and generosity, emphasizing concern for the poor and warning against materialism (Matthew 6:19–24; Luke 12:15). The early Christian community demonstrated collective generosity by sharing resources and supporting members in need (Acts 2:44–45; Acts 4:32–35). The Apostle Paul also encouraged believers to give willingly and cheerfully, emphasizing that “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). According to Blomberg (2013), New Testament teachings on wealth and generosity reveal that Christian giving is fundamentally relational and ethical rather than merely institutional.

However, contemporary Christian practices of giving have developed beyond biblical patterns due to changing social, economic, and organizational realities. Modern churches require financial resources for activities such as evangelism, missionary work, staff salaries, church buildings, media operations, educational programmes, humanitarian initiatives, and administrative expenses. Consequently, churches have developed various fundraising approaches, including tithes, offerings, donations, fundraising campaigns, pledges, thanksgiving offerings, and special contributions.

This development is particularly evident within Pentecostal Christianity, which has experienced significant global growth over the last century. Pentecostal churches emphasize spiritual experiences, divine blessing, faith, and active participation of believers in church activities. In many Pentecostal contexts, financial giving has become closely associated with teachings on faith, prosperity, divine favour, and covenant relationships with God. As Pentecostal churches expand their ministries through media platforms, large worship centres, educational institutions, and humanitarian projects, fundraising has become an important aspect of church administration and sustainability (Anderson, 2014).

In Africa, particularly Nigeria, Pentecostal Christianity has experienced remarkable expansion and has significantly influenced religious, social, and economic life. Nigerian Pentecostal churches have established large congregations, international ministries, schools, universities, hospitals, and charitable foundations. These activities require substantial financial resources, making tithes, offerings, and donations central components of church financing. According to Ukah (2008), Nigerian Pentecostal organizations have developed sophisticated financial systems that support their institutional growth and global religious influence.

The prominence of fundraising practices within Pentecostal Christianity has generated theological and ethical debates. Supporters argue that financial contributions enable churches to fulfill their spiritual mission, support ministers, reach communities, and provide humanitarian assistance. They maintain that giving is an act of worship and partnership with God’s work. From this perspective, financial resources are necessary tools for advancing evangelism, discipleship, and social transformation (Kgatle & Anderson, 2020).

Conversely, critics have raised concerns regarding some contemporary fundraising practices within Pentecostal churches. Issues such as excessive emphasis on financial giving, manipulation of members, commercialization of religious activities, and questionable financial accountability have attracted scholarly attention. Some researchers argue that certain expressions of prosperity theology may encourage believers to view giving primarily as a means of obtaining material blessings rather than as an expression of Christian love and responsibility (Gifford, 2007; Asamoah-Gyadu, 2013).

The rise of prosperity-oriented teachings within sections of Pentecostal Christianity has particularly influenced perceptions of tithes and offerings. The prosperity gospel often emphasizes the relationship between faith, financial contributions, and divine rewards. While proponents argue that such teachings encourage hope, diligence, and generosity, critics contend that they may distort biblical teachings by placing excessive emphasis on wealth accumulation and personal financial success (Bowler, 2013). This debate raises important questions concerning the theological foundations and ethical implications of contemporary church fundraising.

Furthermore, the increasing institutionalization of Pentecostal churches has created a need for effective financial management and accountability. Churches today operate complex organizations requiring transparency, proper stewardship, and responsible use of resources. Financial contributions from members represent not only spiritual commitments but also resources entrusted to church leadership for ministry purposes. Therefore, questions concerning accountability, transparency, and responsible administration remain central to discussions about church fundraising practices (Burgess, 2019).

Although extensive research has examined Pentecostal growth, prosperity theology, and religious economics, limited attention has been given to critically examining the relationship between biblical principles of giving and contemporary fundraising practices within Pentecostal Christianity. Many studies focus either on theological interpretations of giving or sociological analyses of Pentecostal financial practices without adequately exploring areas of continuity and tension between biblical teachings and modern fundraising approaches.

This study therefore seeks to critically examine biblical principles of giving and contemporary church fundraising practices, with particular attention to tithes, offerings, and donations within Pentecostal Christianity. It investigates how biblical concepts of generosity, stewardship, and worship correspond with modern fundraising methods and evaluates the theological and ethical implications of contemporary financial practices in Pentecostal churches.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Financial giving remains a fundamental aspect of Christian worship and church organization. Pentecostal churches around the world depend significantly on tithes, offerings, and donations to sustain ministry activities, support clergy, develop infrastructure, and implement social programmes. In Nigeria and other African contexts, Pentecostal churches have become influential religious institutions with extensive financial activities and large-scale fundraising structures.

However, the increasing prominence of church fundraising practices has generated theological, ethical, and practical concerns. While biblical teachings emphasize generosity, stewardship, sacrifice, and concern for others, some contemporary fundraising practices appear to place greater emphasis on financial contributions as mechanisms for receiving divine blessings. This has created debates regarding whether certain fundraising approaches accurately reflect biblical principles or represent adaptations influenced by modern economic and institutional demands.

A major problem is the tension between traditional biblical concepts of giving and some contemporary Pentecostal teachings on tithes, offerings, and donations. While Scripture presents giving as voluntary, joyful, and motivated by love, some church practices have been criticized for creating pressure on members through promises of financial breakthrough, prosperity, or spiritual rewards. This raises questions about the extent to which modern fundraising practices align with biblical teachings.

Another problem concerns financial accountability and transparency within Pentecostal churches. As churches receive significant financial contributions from members, concerns have emerged regarding the management and utilization of church funds. Lack of clear accountability mechanisms may affect members’ trust and create negative perceptions about church financial practices.

Furthermore, although Pentecostal Christianity has been widely studied, limited research has critically examined how biblical principles of giving influence contemporary fundraising methods. Existing studies often focus on prosperity theology, church growth, or Pentecostal economics but provide insufficient analysis of the theological relationship between biblical giving principles and modern fundraising strategies.

Therefore, this study addresses this gap by critically examining biblical principles of giving and contemporary church fundraising practices in Pentecostal Christianity. It seeks to determine whether current practices concerning tithes, offerings, and donations remain consistent with biblical teachings and to evaluate their theological and ethical implications.

1.3 Aim of the Study

The main aim of this study is to critically examine biblical principles of giving and contemporary church fundraising practices, with particular focus on tithes, offerings, and donations within Pentecostal Christianity.

The study seeks to explore the theological foundations of Christian giving, evaluate contemporary fundraising approaches adopted by Pentecostal churches, and assess the extent to which modern financial practices align with biblical teachings on stewardship, generosity, and responsible resource management.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives of the study are to:

1. Examine the biblical foundations and theological principles underlying Christian giving, including tithes, offerings, and donations.
2. Investigate contemporary fundraising practices employed by Pentecostal churches in relation to tithes, offerings, and other financial contributions.
3. Assess the relationship between biblical principles of giving and modern Pentecostal fundraising practices.
4. Identify theological and ethical challenges associated with contemporary church fundraising practices in Pentecostal Christianity.

1.5 Research Questions

The study will be guided by the following research questions:

1. What are the biblical foundations and theological principles of Christian giving, tithes, offerings, and donations?
2. What fundraising practices are commonly adopted by Pentecostal churches in contemporary Christianity?
3. To what extent do contemporary Pentecostal fundraising practices align with biblical principles of giving?
4. What theological and ethical challenges are associated with modern church fundraising practices?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested in the study:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between biblical principles of giving and contemporary church fundraising practices in Pentecostal Christianity.

1.7 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it contributes to theological, ecclesiastical, and academic discussions concerning Christian giving and financial practices within Pentecostal Christianity. The research provides an opportunity to examine the connection between biblical teachings on generosity and the realities of contemporary church fundraising.

Pentecostal Churches and Church Leaders

The findings of this study will be beneficial to Pentecostal churches and leaders by providing theological and ethical insights into financial practices. Church leaders may use the findings to evaluate their approaches to tithes, offerings, and donations and ensure that fundraising activities remain consistent with biblical principles of stewardship, accountability, and service.

The study may also encourage churches to develop more transparent financial management systems that strengthen members’ trust and promote responsible use of church resources. By critically examining fundraising practices, church leaders may identify areas requiring improvement and adopt approaches that emphasize generosity rather than financial pressure.

Christian Believers and Church Members

The study will help Christian believers develop a deeper understanding of the biblical meaning and purpose of giving. Many believers participate in tithes, offerings, and donations without adequate theological understanding of their significance. This research may provide greater awareness of giving as an expression of worship, gratitude, love, and responsibility rather than merely a religious obligation.

Furthermore, the study may help church members critically evaluate financial teachings within their religious communities and develop informed perspectives on contemporary fundraising practices.

It will provide a foundation for further studies examining the relationship between faith, financial practices, and institutional development within religious organizations.

1.8 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on biblical principles of giving and contemporary church fundraising practices within Pentecostal Christianity. It examines three major forms of church financial contributions: tithes, offerings, and donations.

The theological aspect of the study covers biblical teachings concerning stewardship, generosity, sacrifice, charity, and responsibility toward God and humanity. The practical aspect examines how Pentecostal churches apply these principles through modern fundraising methods, including regular tithing systems, worship offerings, special donations, fundraising campaigns, and financial appeals.

The study specifically focuses on Pentecostal Christianity because of the significant role that financial giving occupies within Pentecostal worship, ministry expansion, and institutional development. It considers the perspectives of Pentecostal church leaders, ministers, members, and theological scholars regarding contemporary fundraising approaches.

The geographical scope of the study may be limited to selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, where Pentecostal movements have experienced considerable growth and influence. The study does not examine financial practices of other religious traditions except where necessary for comparative theological discussion.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Biblical Principles of Giving

Biblical principles of giving refer to the theological teachings and values found in Scripture concerning the act of giving, including generosity, stewardship, sacrifice, worship, love, and responsibility toward God and others.

Giving

Giving refers to the voluntary act of providing financial, material, or other resources for religious, charitable, or social purposes. Within Christianity, giving is viewed as an expression of faith, gratitude, and commitment to God’s work.

Tithes

Tithes refer to the practice of giving one-tenth of personal income, resources, or agricultural produce for religious purposes. In Christian discussions, tithing is interpreted differently among traditions, with some viewing it as a continuing obligation and others as part of Old Testament practices fulfilled through broader principles of generosity.

Offerings

Offerings refer to voluntary contributions made by believers to support worship activities, ministry programmes, church operations, and charitable activities. Unlike tithes, offerings are generally understood as additional expressions of generosity beyond regular financial commitments.

Donations

Donations refer to voluntary financial or material contributions provided by individuals or groups to support church activities, humanitarian projects, community development, or specific ministry needs.

Church Fundraising Practices

Church fundraising practices refer to organized methods used by churches to generate financial resources for ministry operations, including tithes, offerings, donations, pledges, fundraising events, and special contributions.

Pentecostal Christianity

Pentecostal Christianity refers to a Christian movement that emphasizes personal conversion, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, spiritual gifts, healing, miracles, and experiential forms of worship. Pentecostal churches often emphasize active participation of believers in religious activities and ministry support.

Stewardship

Stewardship refers to the biblical concept that human beings are caretakers of resources entrusted to them by God. It involves responsible management and use of financial, material, and spiritual resources for God’s purposes.

Prosperity Theology

Prosperity theology refers to a theological perspective common in some Pentecostal circles that emphasizes the relationship between faith, positive confession, divine favour, and material prosperity. It often teaches that financial giving may be connected with receiving blessings from God.

Financial Accountability

Financial accountability refers to the transparent and responsible management, reporting, and utilization of financial resources entrusted to an organization or institution.
