Project – Digital Financial Inclusion and the Growth of Small and Medium Enterprises in Nigeria: A Study of Moniepoint Inc.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are widely recognized as the engine of economic growth, employment generation, innovation, and poverty reduction across both developed and developing economies. They constitute a significant proportion of business establishments worldwide and contribute substantially to national output, industrial development, income generation, and economic diversification. According to the World Bank (2023), SMEs account for about 90% of businesses and over 50% of global employment, making them indispensable to sustainable economic development. In developing countries such as Nigeria, SMEs play an even more critical role because they provide employment opportunities for a rapidly growing population, stimulate entrepreneurial activities, enhance local production, and promote inclusive economic growth (Ayyagari, Beck, & Demirgüç-Kunt, 2007).

In Nigeria, the importance of SMEs cannot be overstated. The sector contributes significantly to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employment generation, industrialization, and wealth creation. The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that Nigeria has over 39 million Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), representing more than 96% of businesses in the country and contributing nearly half of the nation’s GDP while providing employment for over 80% of the labour force (SMEDAN & NBS, 2021). These statistics demonstrate that SMEs remain fundamental to Nigeria’s economic transformation agenda and the achievement of sustainable development objectives.

Despite their enormous contribution to economic development, Nigerian SMEs continue to face numerous challenges that hinder their growth and long-term sustainability. Among these challenges are inadequate access to finance, poor financial management practices, limited access to formal banking services, insufficient technological adoption, weak business infrastructure, poor record-keeping, regulatory bottlenecks, and limited market access (Beck & Demirgüç-Kunt, 2006). Access to affordable financial services remains one of the most persistent barriers confronting SMEs in Nigeria. Many small businesses struggle to obtain loans from conventional commercial banks due to stringent collateral requirements, inadequate credit histories, high transaction costs, and complex lending procedures (World Bank, 2022).

Financial inclusion has therefore emerged as a strategic policy objective for governments, financial institutions, and international development organizations seeking to improve economic participation among underserved populations. Financial inclusion refers to the availability, accessibility, affordability, and effective usage of formal financial products and services by individuals and businesses regardless of income level or geographical location (World Bank, 2022). According to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN, 2022), financial inclusion enables individuals and enterprises to access savings accounts, payment systems, insurance, credit facilities, investment opportunities, and other financial services necessary for economic development. By integrating previously excluded individuals and businesses into the formal financial system, financial inclusion promotes entrepreneurship, investment, productivity, and poverty reduction.

The rapid advancement of digital technology has transformed the concept of financial inclusion into what is now commonly referred to as digital financial inclusion. Digital financial inclusion involves the provision and use of formal financial services through digital channels such as mobile phones, internet banking, mobile money platforms, agent banking, digital wallets, electronic payment systems, and financial technology (FinTech) applications (Ozili, 2021). Unlike traditional banking systems that depend heavily on physical bank branches, digital financial inclusion enables customers to perform financial transactions conveniently, securely, and at relatively lower costs using digital platforms. This transformation has significantly expanded access to financial services among previously underserved populations, particularly in developing countries where physical banking infrastructure remains inadequate (Demirgüç-Kunt et al., 2022).

Globally, digital financial inclusion has gained increasing recognition as a catalyst for economic development. The Global Findex Database 2021 revealed that 76% of adults worldwide now own an account with a financial institution or mobile money provider, representing significant progress compared to previous years (Demirgüç-Kunt et al., 2022). Mobile money services, digital payment platforms, electronic banking, and financial technology innovations have significantly improved financial accessibility, reduced transaction costs, enhanced business efficiency, and facilitated entrepreneurship across many developing economies. These digital innovations have particularly benefited SMEs by providing alternative channels for payments, savings, borrowing, and financial management.

The emergence of Financial Technology (FinTech) companies has further accelerated digital financial inclusion worldwide. FinTech refers to the application of innovative digital technologies to improve financial service delivery through mobile applications, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, digital payment systems, and data analytics (Gomber, Koch, & Siering, 2017). FinTech companies have transformed traditional financial services by introducing faster, more affordable, user-friendly, and accessible financial solutions for individuals and businesses. Their innovative business models have expanded financial access, especially among SMEs that were previously underserved by conventional banking institutions.

Nigeria has experienced remarkable growth in its financial technology ecosystem over the past decade. The country has become one of Africa’s leading FinTech markets, driven by increasing mobile phone penetration, internet connectivity, supportive regulatory reforms, and growing demand for digital financial services (Enhancing Financial Innovation & Access [EFInA], 2023). The Central Bank of Nigeria’s National Financial Inclusion Strategy has further promoted digital payment systems, agent banking, mobile banking, and electronic financial services as mechanisms for achieving broader financial inclusion (CBN, 2022). Consequently, millions of Nigerians now conduct financial transactions through digital platforms without necessarily visiting traditional bank branches.

The introduction of agent banking has significantly strengthened digital financial inclusion in Nigeria. Agent banking enables licensed financial service providers to deliver banking services through authorized agents located within local communities. This model has expanded financial service delivery to rural and underserved areas where conventional commercial banks have limited physical presence (CBN, 2022). Agent banking has reduced geographical barriers to financial access while providing SMEs with convenient channels for deposits, withdrawals, bill payments, transfers, and business transactions.

Digital payment systems have equally transformed business operations among SMEs. Modern businesses increasingly rely on electronic payment solutions such as mobile transfers, Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals, Quick Response (QR) payments, virtual accounts, digital wallets, and online banking platforms to facilitate commercial transactions. These technologies improve business efficiency by reducing cash-handling risks, increasing transaction speed, improving financial record-keeping, enhancing transparency, and expanding customer convenience (Ozili, 2021). Digital financial services also enable SMEs to build transaction histories that may improve their future access to credit and other financial products.

Among the leading FinTech companies driving digital financial inclusion in Nigeria is Moniepoint Inc. Established initially as TeamApt before rebranding to Moniepoint, the company has evolved into one of Africa’s largest business banking and payment platforms, providing digital financial solutions specifically designed for SMEs, merchants, and individuals. Through its extensive network of agents, POS terminals, business banking services, digital payments, working capital solutions, expense management tools, and merchant services, Moniepoint has significantly expanded financial access across urban and rural communities in Nigeria (Moniepoint Inc., 2024).

Moniepoint’s business model focuses primarily on empowering SMEs through accessible digital financial services that improve business efficiency and financial management. The company provides business accounts, instant settlements, payment processing, inventory management solutions, payroll services, expense management, digital lending opportunities, and cash flow management tools that enable SMEs to conduct business more efficiently. These services reduce dependence on cash transactions while improving financial inclusion among previously underserved entrepreneurs (Moniepoint Inc., 2024).

One of the most important contributions of digital financial inclusion is its ability to improve SME growth through enhanced access to financial services. Digital financial platforms enable businesses to receive payments more efficiently, maintain accurate financial records, access credit facilities, manage cash flows, expand customer reach, and improve operational efficiency (Allen et al., 2016). Businesses with greater financial inclusion generally experience higher productivity, improved profitability, increased sales, better financial resilience, and greater opportunities for expansion than financially excluded enterprises (Beck, Demirgüç-Kunt, & Maksimovic, 2005).

Recent technological innovations have further strengthened the relationship between digital financial inclusion and SME development. Artificial intelligence, data analytics, digital identity verification, cloud computing, and alternative credit scoring models now enable FinTech companies to assess SME creditworthiness using transaction histories rather than traditional collateral requirements (Gomber et al., 2017). These innovations have expanded financing opportunities for many SMEs that previously lacked access to formal credit through commercial banks.

Despite the remarkable progress achieved in Nigeria’s digital financial landscape, significant disparities remain in the adoption and effective utilization of digital financial services among SMEs. Many businesses, particularly in rural communities, continue to experience challenges relating to digital literacy, internet connectivity, cybersecurity concerns, inadequate digital infrastructure, low trust in digital platforms, and insufficient awareness of available financial technologies (EFInA, 2023). These challenges may limit the extent to which digital financial inclusion translates into sustainable SME growth.

Furthermore, although existing literature has extensively examined financial inclusion and SME development, comparatively fewer studies have focused specifically on the contribution of FinTech companies such as Moniepoint Inc. to SME growth in Nigeria. Much of the available research has concentrated on commercial banking institutions, mobile money services, or financial inclusion generally, while limited empirical attention has been devoted to examining how Moniepoint’s digital financial services influence SME growth, financial accessibility, business expansion, and entrepreneurial sustainability. This represents a contextual gap in the literature that requires empirical investigation.

Against this background, this study seeks to examine the relationship between digital financial inclusion and the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises in Nigeria, using Moniepoint Inc. as the case study. Specifically, the study investigates how digital payment systems, agent banking services, access to digital financial services, and digital lending solutions contribute to the growth and sustainability of SMEs in Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) occupy a central position in Nigeria’s economic development by contributing significantly to employment generation, poverty reduction, innovation, and economic diversification. Despite their importance, many Nigerian SMEs continue to experience slow growth, high mortality rates, limited competitiveness, and operational challenges. One of the most persistent constraints affecting SME development is inadequate access to formal financial services, particularly affordable credit, reliable payment systems, savings facilities, and business financial management tools (Ayyagari, Beck, & Demirgüç-Kunt, 2007). Many small business owners operate within informal financial systems because conventional banking services often require strict documentation, collateral security, extensive financial records, and complex procedures that many SMEs cannot easily satisfy (Beck & Demirgüç-Kunt, 2006).

The limited access of SMEs to formal financial services has created significant barriers to business expansion and sustainability in Nigeria. Without adequate financial resources, many SMEs struggle to acquire productive assets, invest in technology, manage cash flows, increase production capacity, and respond effectively to market opportunities. According to the World Bank (2022), limited access to finance remains one of the major obstacles affecting small businesses in developing economies because financial constraints restrict their ability to innovate, compete, and achieve long-term growth. In Nigeria, this challenge is intensified by economic instability, high lending costs, inadequate financial infrastructure, and limited availability of SME-friendly financing options.

Traditional financial institutions have historically been unable to fully address the financial needs of many Nigerian SMEs due to challenges associated with information asymmetry, high operational costs, and perceived lending risks. Commercial banks often consider SMEs risky borrowers because many small businesses lack audited financial statements, formal registration documents, adequate collateral, and established credit histories (Beck, Demirgüç-Kunt, & Maksimovic, 2005). As a result, many SMEs are excluded from formal credit markets and depend heavily on personal savings, family support, informal lending arrangements, and other costly financing alternatives. This financial exclusion limits their ability to scale operations and contribute fully to national economic development.

Digital financial inclusion has emerged as a potential solution to many of the financial challenges confronting SMEs. Through digital platforms, businesses can access affordable payment solutions, digital banking services, electronic transaction systems, financial records, and alternative credit opportunities without relying exclusively on traditional banking structures (Demirgüç-Kunt et al., 2022). FinTech companies have particularly contributed to expanding financial accessibility by developing innovative solutions that reduce transaction costs, simplify financial processes, and provide underserved businesses with opportunities to participate in the formal financial system (Gomber, Koch, & Siering, 2017).

However, despite the rapid growth of digital financial services in Nigeria, several challenges remain regarding their effectiveness in promoting SME growth. While many SMEs have adopted digital payment platforms and mobile financial solutions, questions remain concerning whether these services have significantly improved business performance, profitability, sustainability, and expansion. Some SMEs continue to experience difficulties in accessing digital financial services due to limited digital literacy, unreliable internet connectivity, inadequate technological infrastructure, cybersecurity concerns, transaction failures, and lack of trust in digital platforms (EFInA, 2023).

Another major concern is that digital financial inclusion does not automatically translate into SME growth. Although access to digital payment systems and financial platforms has increased, many SMEs still struggle with inadequate capital, poor business management practices, limited financial knowledge, and weak institutional support. Therefore, it is important to empirically examine whether digital financial inclusion initiatives are producing measurable improvements in SME growth outcomes or whether additional organizational and environmental factors influence the effectiveness of these digital solutions.

Furthermore, while several studies have examined financial inclusion and SME performance, much of the existing literature has focused broadly on banking services, mobile money adoption, or general financial accessibility. Limited empirical attention has been devoted to examining the specific role of FinTech-driven digital financial platforms in supporting SME growth in Nigeria. In particular, there remains insufficient research on how the services provided by Moniepoint Inc. influence SME development through improved payment systems, business banking solutions, agent banking networks, digital lending opportunities, and financial management tools.

Moniepoint Inc. represents an important case for investigating digital financial inclusion because of its strong focus on providing technology-driven financial solutions to Nigerian businesses. Through its agent banking network, merchant payment infrastructure, business accounts, and digital financial services, Moniepoint has become a major player in Nigeria’s FinTech ecosystem. However, despite its rapid expansion and increasing adoption among SMEs, there is limited academic evidence regarding the extent to which Moniepoint’s services contribute to SME growth, operational efficiency, financial accessibility, and business sustainability.

Additionally, existing studies on digital financial inclusion in Nigeria have often focused on individuals and households rather than business enterprises. While financial inclusion among individuals is important, SMEs require specialized financial services that address business-specific challenges such as cash flow management, merchant payments, credit access, transaction monitoring, and business expansion. This creates a research gap regarding the role of digital financial platforms in promoting enterprise-level financial inclusion and SME development.

There is also a contextual gap because many previous studies have examined digital financial inclusion in broad national or regional contexts without focusing on specific FinTech organizations operating within Nigeria. Examining Moniepoint Inc. provides an opportunity to understand how a technology-driven financial service provider contributes to SME growth in the Nigerian business environment. Such investigation is necessary because the success of digital financial inclusion initiatives depends largely on the effectiveness, accessibility, affordability, and relevance of the platforms delivering these services.

Therefore, the problem addressed by this study is the limited empirical understanding of how digital financial inclusion influences the growth of SMEs in Nigeria, particularly through the services provided by Moniepoint Inc. Although digital financial technologies have expanded financial access, the extent to which they improve SME growth remains insufficiently established. This study therefore seeks to fill this gap by examining the relationship between digital financial inclusion and SME growth in Nigeria, using Moniepoint Inc. as the case study.

1.7 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it provides empirical insight into the role of digital financial inclusion in promoting the growth and sustainability of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria, with particular reference to Moniepoint Inc. The study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on financial technology, digital transformation, entrepreneurship development, and inclusive economic growth. The findings will be useful to different stakeholders, including SME owners, FinTech companies, financial institutions, policymakers, researchers, and development organizations.

The study will be beneficial to Small and Medium Enterprise owners and entrepreneurs by providing a better understanding of how digital financial services can support business growth. Many SMEs in Nigeria face challenges relating to payment management, financial record keeping, access to capital, and efficient transaction processing. The findings of this study will highlight the ways digital financial inclusion tools such as digital payment platforms, agent banking services, business accounts, and digital lending solutions can improve business operations, increase financial accessibility, and enhance competitiveness. By understanding the benefits and limitations of digital financial services, SME owners can make informed decisions regarding the adoption of appropriate financial technologies.

The study will also be valuable to Moniepoint Inc. by providing evidence-based information on how its digital financial services influence SME development. The findings will enable the organization to evaluate the effectiveness of its products and services in addressing the financial needs of small businesses. It will also help identify areas requiring improvement, such as customer support, digital accessibility, credit solutions, financial education, and technological innovation. Such information can guide Moniepoint in designing more effective financial solutions that respond to the changing needs of Nigerian SMEs.

For FinTech companies and digital financial service providers, this study will provide useful knowledge on the factors influencing the effectiveness of digital financial inclusion initiatives. As competition within Nigeria’s FinTech ecosystem continues to increase, understanding how digital financial services contribute to SME growth will assist providers in developing customer-centred products, improving service delivery, and expanding financial inclusion among underserved business communities.

The study will be significant to government agencies and policymakers, particularly institutions responsible for financial sector regulation, entrepreneurship development, and economic planning. Organizations such as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), and other financial development institutions may utilize the findings to strengthen policies aimed at improving digital financial inclusion and supporting SME development. The study will provide evidence that may assist policymakers in addressing barriers affecting the adoption of digital financial services, including digital literacy gaps, infrastructure limitations, cybersecurity concerns, and unequal access to technology.

The study will also benefit commercial banks and traditional financial institutions by providing insights into how digital financial platforms are transforming financial service delivery and creating alternative pathways for SME financing. As FinTech companies increasingly compete with conventional banks, understanding the relationship between digital financial inclusion and SME growth can encourage financial institutions to develop more flexible, affordable, and accessible services specifically designed for small businesses.

Furthermore, the study will contribute to academic research and scholarship by expanding existing literature on digital financial inclusion and SME development within the Nigerian context. Although previous studies have examined financial inclusion, mobile banking, and entrepreneurship development, limited research has focused specifically on the role of FinTech companies such as Moniepoint Inc. in enhancing SME growth. This study will therefore provide additional empirical evidence that can serve as a reference material for researchers, students, and scholars interested in digital finance, entrepreneurship, financial technology, and economic development.

The study will also be useful to development organizations and international agencies interested in promoting inclusive economic growth in developing countries. Since SMEs contribute significantly to employment creation and poverty reduction, understanding how digital financial solutions improve enterprise performance can support programmes aimed at strengthening entrepreneurship, financial accessibility, and sustainable economic development.
