INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Agriculture remains one of the most important sectors of the Nigerian economy and a major source of livelihood for a large proportion of the rural population. It provides food, employment, household income and raw materials for agro-based industries while supporting economic activities across rural communities. In spite of its importance, agricultural production in Nigeria continues to face numerous challenges, including declining soil fertility, soil erosion, nutrient depletion, climate variability, increasing population pressure and the progressive reduction of fallow periods. These challenges are particularly important for smallholder farmers whose production depends heavily on the natural fertility of the soil and who often have limited financial capacity to purchase external agricultural inputs.
Soil is a fundamental natural resource upon which crop production depends. It provides plants with physical support, water and essential nutrients while serving as an important component of the terrestrial ecosystem. The capacity of farmers to maintain soil fertility is therefore central to the sustainability of agricultural production. Sustainable crop production requires that farmers obtain adequate yields from the land while maintaining or improving the productive capacity of the soil for future production. Where soil nutrients are continuously removed through crop harvests without adequate replenishment, soil fertility declines and agricultural productivity may eventually be reduced. Adediran et al. (2020) observed that declining agricultural productivity in Nigeria is associated with poor soil management and emphasised the need for practices that conserve soil, improve fertility and sustain crop productivity.
Smallholder farmers are particularly vulnerable to soil degradation because they often depend on relatively small parcels of land and may cultivate the same land repeatedly. Population growth and increasing demand for agricultural land have reduced opportunities for long periods of natural fallowing in many farming communities. Consequently, farmers have increasingly had to develop ways of maintaining soil productivity through combinations of traditional knowledge, locally available organic resources and modern agricultural technologies. This situation makes soil management a critical aspect of sustainable smallholder agriculture.
Soil management refers to the deliberate ways through which farmers maintain, improve or conserve the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil for agricultural purposes. Such practices may include crop rotation, intercropping, mulching, application of animal manure, composting, incorporation of crop residues, bush fallowing, erosion control, minimum tillage, contour farming, cover cropping and the use of inorganic fertilizers. Although some of these practices are promoted through formal agricultural extension systems, many have existed within indigenous farming systems for generations.
Indigenous knowledge represents the accumulated knowledge, skills, experiences, beliefs and practices developed by local communities through prolonged interaction with their physical, biological and socio-cultural environments. In agriculture, indigenous knowledge may involve farmers’ ability to identify different soil types, recognise indicators of soil fertility, determine appropriate planting periods, select crops suitable for particular land conditions, manage crop residues, conserve soil moisture and use locally available materials to improve soil productivity. Obetta and Asogwa (2013), in their study of indigenous knowledge utilisation in Enugu State, reported that farmers employed several indigenous practices in crop production, livestock production and soil conservation. Their findings indicated that indigenous knowledge remained relevant to sustainable agricultural production and that such knowledge should receive greater attention from agricultural researchers, teachers and extension personnel.
Indigenous soil management practices are therefore not simply traditional activities carried out because they have been inherited from previous generations. They may represent farmers’ locally developed responses to particular soil, climate, ecological and socio-economic conditions. For example, farmers may allow crop residues to remain on the soil surface as mulch, apply animal manure to replenish nutrients, rotate crops to reduce nutrient exhaustion, intercrop cereals with legumes to improve soil fertility, or leave portions of land fallow to allow natural regeneration. Such practices can reduce dependence on costly external inputs while making use of resources that are readily available within the farming household or community.
The importance of indigenous soil management is particularly relevant in sub-Saharan Africa, where smallholder farmers frequently operate under conditions of limited access to fertilizers, irrigation, machinery and formal agricultural finance. Farmers have historically developed locally adapted strategies for managing soil fertility and coping with environmental variability. A classic study by Harris (2002) demonstrated that farmers’ soil fertility management strategies in northern Nigeria involved combinations of crop arrangements and organic and mineral nutrient sources. The study showed that local farmers possessed substantial knowledge concerning nutrient management and used available farm resources to maintain soil fertility.
The concept of indigenous knowledge is also closely connected to the idea of sustainability. A farming practice can be considered sustainable when it enables farmers to produce crops over time without causing unacceptable deterioration of the natural resource base. Indigenous practices such as crop rotation, mulching, organic manure application, intercropping and fallowing may contribute to sustainability by improving nutrient cycling, reducing erosion, conserving soil moisture and maintaining soil organic matter. However, not every traditional practice is necessarily sustainable under contemporary conditions. Changes in population density, land availability, climate, markets and farming intensity may affect the effectiveness of practices that were appropriate under earlier ecological and demographic circumstances. Consequently, there is a need to investigate which indigenous soil management practices are currently used by farmers and how effective they are in supporting sustainable crop production.
The relationship between indigenous knowledge and soil conservation has received attention in Nigeria. Kolawole (2006) examined local farmers’ approaches to soil conservation in Nigeria and highlighted the importance of indigenous knowledge systems in maintaining soil structure, water retention and nutrient conservation. The study also emphasised the potential benefits of integrating local knowledge with scientific approaches to soil conservation. This integration is important because scientific agricultural practices and indigenous knowledge should not necessarily be regarded as mutually exclusive. Instead, appropriate local practices can complement scientific technologies when they are properly evaluated and adapted to prevailing ecological conditions.
Evidence from Enugu State provides particularly strong justification for examining indigenous soil management practices. Dimelu, Ogbonna and Enwelu (2013) studied soil conservation practices among arable crop farmers in the Enugu North Agricultural Zone and found widespread use of organic manure, cover crops, crop rotation and mulching. The study reported that 87.5% of respondents used organic manure, 87.5% used cover crops, 86.7% practised crop rotation and 85.8% used mulching. Organic manure, inorganic manure, crop rotation and mulching were among the practices most preferred by farmers. The farmers identified improved productivity, product quality and long-term nutrient benefits as important reasons for using these practices.
These findings are significant because the Enugu North Agricultural Zone includes the Nsukka agricultural environment. They demonstrate that farmers in the broader area already possess and utilise different soil conservation practices. However, the existence of these practices does not necessarily mean that they are used consistently, adequately or sustainably. Farmers may combine several practices according to their resources, labour availability, farm size, experience, access to extension services and perception of soil fertility.
The issue of soil management is also important in Nsukka because the soils and landscapes of the area have specific physical and fertility characteristics. Recent soil research has noted that soils in Nsukka Local Government Area are derived from different geological materials, including Upper Coal Measures, Lower Coal Measures, Nkporo Shale and false-bedded sandstones. The variation in parent materials contributes to differences in soil properties and has implications for agricultural land-use and fertility management. Such variability reinforces the need for locally appropriate soil management strategies rather than relying exclusively on generalized recommendations.
Research conducted within the Nsukka environment has also demonstrated concerns relating to soil fertility. Asadu and Mama (2024), in a study of compound farms at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, reported that organic matter, total nitrogen and available phosphorus were low in the soils examined, although some other nutrient characteristics were moderate. The researchers recommended nutrient replenishment through appropriate organic and inorganic fertilizer use and cautioned against practices such as indiscriminate burning that can negatively affect soil biological activity.
The findings are important for smallholder farmers in Nsukka Local Government Area because soil fertility is not merely a scientific issue; it is directly connected with farmers’ productivity, food security and livelihoods. When soils lose fertility, farmers may experience declining crop yields, increased expenditure on fertilizers and other inputs, greater pressure to cultivate additional land and reduced farm income. Smallholder farmers with limited financial resources may therefore be particularly dependent on affordable and locally available methods of maintaining soil productivity.
One indigenous approach to soil fertility management is the use of organic materials. Farmers may apply animal dung, household organic waste, compost, ash and decomposed plant materials to agricultural fields. Organic materials can contribute to soil organic matter and nutrient cycling and may improve some physical properties of soil. In addition, the use of locally available materials can reduce farmers’ dependence on purchased inputs. However, the quantity and quality of organic manure available to farmers may vary considerably, and its effectiveness depends on appropriate handling, decomposition and application.
Mulching is another practice with potential sustainability benefits. It involves covering the soil surface with plant residues, grasses or other suitable organic materials. Mulch can help reduce direct exposure of the soil to rainfall, decrease erosion, conserve moisture and suppress weeds. In the Enugu North Agricultural Zone, mulching was reported as one of the widely used soil conservation practices among arable farmers (Dimelu et al., 2013).
Crop rotation is another important practice. It involves growing different crops sequentially on the same piece of land according to a planned pattern. Crop rotation can help interrupt pest and disease cycles and improve nutrient management, particularly when legumes are incorporated into the rotation. In traditional farming systems, rotation may also be based on farmers’ understanding that continuous cultivation of the same crop can reduce soil productivity. Similarly, intercropping allows farmers to cultivate two or more crops on the same land at the same time and may contribute to efficient use of land, labour and soil nutrients.
Fallowing is another indigenous practice historically used to restore soil fertility. Under traditional shifting cultivation systems, cultivated land was left unused for a period to permit vegetation regeneration and nutrient recovery. However, population growth and land scarcity have shortened fallow periods in many areas, reducing the ability of fallowing to restore soil fertility fully. The reduction in fallow duration therefore creates the need for alternative or complementary soil management practices.
Green manuring is also relevant. It involves incorporating suitable green plant materials into the soil to improve nutrient availability and organic matter. Asogwa, Ifeanyieze and Ekele (2014) examined green-manuring practices in Enugu State and identified plants and practices that farmers could use for maintaining soil fertility and supporting sustainable food production. Their findings reinforce the argument that locally available biological resources can contribute to soil fertility management when properly utilised.
Another important indigenous practice is the controlled use of crop residues. Instead of removing or burning all residues after harvest, farmers can leave suitable residues on the field or incorporate them into the soil. Crop residues can provide organic matter and help protect the soil surface against erosion. However, competing demands for crop residues as animal feed, household fuel and other uses may limit their availability for soil management.
Soil conservation is particularly important in southeastern Nigeria because intense rainfall, undulating terrain and continuous cultivation can increase the risk of soil erosion. Where soil is left bare, rainfall can detach and transport topsoil, resulting in nutrient loss and reduced soil depth. Indigenous methods such as mulching, crop cover, contour-oriented cultivation and maintenance of vegetation can contribute to erosion control. Dimelu et al. (2013) found that farmers in Enugu North used contour bonds and terracing in addition to organic and crop-based conservation measures.
Nevertheless, the use of indigenous practices may be influenced by socio-economic conditions. Farmers’ age, farming experience, education, farm size, income, access to extension services, labour availability, land tenure and membership of farmer organisations can influence their ability and willingness to use different soil management practices. A recent study of smallholder farmers in Enugu State found that education, farm income, extension contact, farm size and farming experience were among the factors significantly associated with levels of soil management practice use. The same study reported that 59% of the sampled farmers had low levels of soil management practice use, indicating that knowledge of soil management does not always translate into intensive or consistent practice.
Modern agricultural development has sometimes placed greater emphasis on external inputs such as inorganic fertilizers, improved seeds, pesticides and mechanisation. These technologies can contribute substantially to crop productivity when appropriately used. However, exclusive dependence on external inputs may be difficult for resource-constrained smallholder farmers because of high costs and limited availability. Sustainable agriculture therefore requires an integrated approach in which farmers can combine locally available resources with scientifically validated technologies.
Adediran et al. (2020) emphasised that sustainable soil fertility management in Nigeria should involve a holistic combination of approaches, including improved fallows, legumes, cover crops, efficient fertilizer use, organic fertilizers, agro-minerals, alley farming, bio-fertilization, mulching and minimum tillage. The authors further stressed the importance of preventing erosion and soil compaction. This integrated perspective is relevant to indigenous soil management because some local practices can provide a foundation upon which improved scientific recommendations can be built.
The preservation of indigenous agricultural knowledge is also becoming increasingly important because knowledge can be lost when younger generations move away from farming or when traditional practices are displaced by external technologies. Obetta and Asogwa (2013) observed that indigenous knowledge systems in Enugu State were at risk of being neglected and that agricultural education and extension needed to recognise and transmit useful indigenous knowledge. The loss of such knowledge may be significant where it contains locally adapted information about soil types, crops, weather patterns and natural resource management.
At the same time, indigenous knowledge should not be romanticised or assumed to be automatically sustainable. Some traditional practices may become ineffective when environmental conditions change or when population pressure intensifies. For example, prolonged fallowing may be difficult where available farmland is limited. Similarly, some methods of clearing land or disposing of crop residues may contribute to soil degradation if improperly used. Therefore, systematic investigation is required to distinguish practices that genuinely support sustainable crop production from those that may require modification.
This is particularly important in Nsukka Local Government Area, where agriculture continues to provide livelihoods for rural households and where farming takes place under changing environmental and socio-economic conditions. A recent study focusing specifically on Okpuje Community in Nsukka Local Government Area examined the value of indigenous knowledge for sustainable subsistence agriculture and was motivated by the need to understand how local knowledge supports continued agricultural production under unfavourable environmental conditions. This suggests that indigenous agricultural knowledge remains a relevant area of inquiry within the Nsukka environment.
The current study therefore proceeds from the understanding that sustainable crop production requires more than the introduction of modern agricultural technologies. It also requires recognition, documentation and assessment of farmers’ existing knowledge and practices. Indigenous soil management practices may provide relatively affordable mechanisms for maintaining soil fertility, conserving moisture, reducing erosion and sustaining crop production. However, their current level of utilisation, perceived effectiveness, constraints and contribution to sustainable crop production among smallholder farmers in Nsukka Local Government Area require empirical investigation.
Consequently, this study focuses on Indigenous Soil Management Practices and Sustainable Crop Production among Smallholder Farmers in Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State. The study will identify the indigenous soil management practices used by farmers, examine the extent to which the practices are utilised, assess their perceived contribution to sustainable crop production, identify factors influencing their adoption and examine the constraints limiting their use. By concentrating on Nsukka LGA, the study seeks to generate location-specific evidence that can contribute to agricultural extension, soil conservation planning and sustainable rural development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Soil fertility decline has become an important challenge to sustainable agricultural production in Nigeria. Smallholder farmers depend heavily on land for food production and household income, yet continuous cultivation, erosion, nutrient removal, shortening fallow periods and inadequate soil replenishment can gradually reduce the productive capacity of agricultural land. When soil fertility declines, farmers may experience reduced yields and may be compelled to increase expenditure on fertilizers, labour and other inputs. For resource-constrained farmers, this situation can create a cycle of low productivity, low income and further inability to invest in soil improvement.
The problem is particularly important in southeastern Nigeria, including Enugu State, where agricultural land is under considerable pressure. Population growth and competition for land have reduced opportunities for prolonged fallowing in many communities. Farmers increasingly cultivate available land repeatedly, thereby placing greater pressure on the soil. At the same time, erosion can remove fertile topsoil and nutrients from cultivated fields. These conditions create a need for effective and sustainable soil management practices capable of maintaining productivity over time.
Scientific recommendations for soil fertility management commonly emphasise the use of fertilizers, improved planting materials, soil testing, erosion control and other modern technologies. However, many smallholder farmers face limitations in adopting such practices because of financial constraints, inadequate extension services, input costs, limited access to appropriate technologies and other socio-economic factors. Consequently, farmers continue to rely partly on locally available resources and knowledge developed through generations of farming experience.
Indigenous soil management practices have the potential to provide useful and affordable alternatives or complements to modern soil management technologies. Practices such as organic manure application, mulching, crop rotation, intercropping, composting, green manuring, crop-residue management, fallowing and traditional erosion-control methods can contribute to soil fertility and conservation. Evidence from Enugu North shows that farmers already use several such practices, with organic manure, cover crops, crop rotation and mulching among the most commonly reported practices (Dimelu et al., 2013).
However, the continued existence of indigenous practices does not necessarily mean that they are being adequately utilised. A study of smallholder farmers across Enugu State found that the average level of soil management practice use was only 47%, while 59% of the farmers were classified as having low use levels. Factors such as education, farm income, extension contact, farm size, farming experience and the cost of land improvement practices were found to influence soil management practice use. This suggests that farmers may possess knowledge of soil management practices but face practical limitations in applying them consistently.
There is also concern about the gradual erosion of indigenous agricultural knowledge itself. Younger farmers may have fewer opportunities to learn traditional soil management methods from older farmers, while formal agricultural education and extension programmes may emphasise modern technologies more strongly than local knowledge. Obetta and Asogwa (2013) noted that indigenous knowledge in Enugu State had received inadequate attention in agricultural education and that some valuable practices risked being neglected as their custodians aged. If such knowledge is not documented and evaluated, useful locally adapted practices may disappear without being properly assessed.
Another problem is that not all indigenous soil management practices are necessarily suitable under present environmental and socio-economic conditions. Traditional fallowing, for instance, requires sufficient land and time, both of which may be increasingly scarce. Some residue-management practices may conflict with household demands for livestock feed or fuel. Certain traditional clearing methods may also expose soils to erosion. Therefore, simply encouraging farmers to return to traditional methods without empirical assessment may not provide an adequate solution to contemporary soil degradation.
The soil characteristics of Nsukka further reinforce the need for location-specific research. Nsukka contains soils derived from different geological materials, and differences in soil characteristics have implications for fertility management and agricultural productivity. Research at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka has also identified low levels of organic matter, total nitrogen and available phosphorus in studied compound-farm soils, indicating the importance of nutrient replenishment and responsible soil management in the area (Asadu & Mama, 2024).
Despite the importance of indigenous knowledge in agricultural production, there is insufficient empirical evidence specifically documenting the current indigenous soil management practices of smallholder farmers across Nsukka Local Government Area and establishing how these practices relate to sustainable crop production. Existing research has provided useful evidence at the wider Enugu State or Enugu North Agricultural Zone level, while some recent studies have focused on specific communities or institutional farms. These studies leave room for a systematic investigation of smallholder farmers within Nsukka LGA.
The absence of such location-specific evidence creates several problems. First, agricultural extension personnel may lack adequate information about the local soil management practices farmers already understand and use. Second, policymakers may find it difficult to design interventions that appropriately combine indigenous knowledge with improved soil-management technologies. Third, potentially useful practices may remain undocumented and could gradually disappear. Fourth, practices that farmers perceive as beneficial may continue to be used without sufficient scientific evaluation of their sustainability.
There is also a practical concern regarding the effectiveness of indigenous practices under contemporary farming conditions. Farmers may know that a particular practice improves soil productivity but may not have sufficient labour, organic materials, land or time to apply it at an effective level. Conversely, some practices may be used because they are culturally familiar even when their effectiveness has declined under changed environmental conditions. Understanding these realities requires empirical assessment of farmers’ actual practices rather than assumptions about indigenous knowledge.
Furthermore, sustainable crop production is not measured solely by immediate yield. A practice that produces high yields in one season but causes nutrient depletion, erosion or loss of soil organic matter may undermine long-term agricultural productivity. Sustainable production therefore requires practices that maintain the productive capacity of the soil while supporting present agricultural needs. Indigenous soil management practices should consequently be examined not only in terms of their prevalence but also in terms of their perceived contribution to soil fertility, erosion control, moisture conservation and continued crop production.
The problem addressed by this study is therefore the inadequate empirical understanding of the indigenous soil management practices currently used by smallholder farmers in Nsukka Local Government Area and the extent to which these practices contribute to sustainable crop production. Although evidence from Enugu State indicates that farmers use organic manure, crop rotation, mulching, cover crops and other conservation practices, it remains necessary to establish the particular practices used in Nsukka LGA, the extent of their utilisation, the factors influencing their use and the constraints that farmers face.
The study is consequently designed to investigate indigenous soil management practices among smallholder farmers in Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State. The study will provide evidence that can help determine whether and how local soil management knowledge can be documented, strengthened and integrated with appropriate scientific agricultural recommendations to promote sustainable crop production.
1.3 Aim of the Study
The main aim of this study is to examine indigenous soil management practices and their contribution to sustainable crop production among smallholder farmers in Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The specific objectives are to:
- identify the indigenous soil management practices used by smallholder farmers in Nsukka Local Government Area;
- determine the extent to which smallholder farmers utilise indigenous soil management practices in the study area;
- examine farmers’ perceptions of the contribution of indigenous soil management practices to sustainable crop production;
- identify the factors influencing the utilisation of indigenous soil management practices among smallholder farmers;
- examine the major constraints limiting the use of indigenous soil management practices in the study area; and
- determine the relationship between the utilisation of indigenous soil management practices and sustainable crop production among smallholder farmers in Nsukka Local Government Area.
1.5 Research Questions
The study will answer the following research questions:
- What indigenous soil management practices are used by smallholder farmers in Nsukka Local Government Area?
- To what extent do smallholder farmers utilise indigenous soil management practices in the study area?
- What contributions do farmers perceive indigenous soil management practices to make to sustainable crop production?
- What factors influence the utilisation of indigenous soil management practices among smallholder farmers?
- What are the major constraints limiting the use of indigenous soil management practices in Nsukka Local Government Area?
- What relationship exists between the utilisation of indigenous soil management practices and sustainable crop production among smallholder farmers in Nsukka Local Government Area?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between the utilisation of indigenous soil management practices and sustainable crop production among smallholder farmers in Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State.
1.7 Significance of the Study
The study will be significant to smallholder farmers, agricultural extension agencies, government policymakers, agricultural researchers, farmer organisations, environmental management institutions and future researchers.
Smallholder Farmers
The findings will help smallholder farmers understand the potential contribution of indigenous soil management practices to sustainable crop production. By documenting practices that farmers already use, the study may encourage the continued application of effective and environmentally appropriate methods. It may also help farmers identify practices that can be combined with improved technologies to enhance soil productivity.
Agricultural Extension Personnel
The study will provide agricultural extension workers with information about farmers’ existing indigenous knowledge. Extension programmes can become more effective when they build upon farmers’ existing knowledge rather than completely replacing it. The findings may therefore help extension personnel develop locally appropriate training programmes on soil fertility, erosion control, organic resource management and sustainable crop production.
Government and Policymakers
The findings may assist government agencies in developing policies and programmes that recognise the role of indigenous knowledge in sustainable agriculture. Instead of focusing exclusively on external agricultural inputs, agricultural policies could incorporate validated local practices alongside scientifically recommended technologies.
Agricultural Research Institutions
The study will provide researchers with information that may be used to identify indigenous practices requiring further scientific investigation. Practices that farmers perceive as effective could be subjected to agronomic trials to determine their effects on soil fertility, crop yield and long-term soil health.
Farmer Organisations and Cooperatives
Farmer organisations may use the findings to promote knowledge-sharing among members. Older and more experienced farmers can share useful indigenous knowledge with younger farmers, thereby helping to preserve locally developed agricultural knowledge.
Environmental Management Agencies
The findings may contribute to environmental conservation efforts by identifying indigenous practices that help control erosion, conserve soil moisture, maintain soil organic matter and reduce environmentally harmful agricultural practices.
Agricultural Educators
Agricultural education institutions may use the findings to incorporate relevant indigenous agricultural knowledge into teaching and extension curricula. This can help future agricultural professionals understand that useful agricultural knowledge can originate from both scientific research and farmers’ long-term experience.
Future Researchers
The study will provide a reference point for future research on indigenous knowledge, soil fertility, sustainable agriculture, climate adaptation and smallholder farming in Enugu State and other parts of Nigeria.
1.8 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on indigenous soil management practices and sustainable crop production among smallholder farmers in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Geographically, the study will be restricted to selected farming communities within Nsukka Local Government Area.
The study will examine indigenous practices such as:
- crop rotation;
- intercropping;
- bush fallowing;
- mulching;
- use of animal manure;
- composting;
- green manuring;
- crop-residue management;
- traditional erosion-control methods;
- cover cropping;
- traditional soil fertility assessment; and
- other locally developed soil conservation and fertility-management practices identified during the field study.
The study will also consider farmers’ level of utilisation of these practices, perceived benefits, factors influencing their use and constraints to utilisation.
Sustainable crop production will be examined in terms of indicators such as maintenance of soil fertility, crop productivity, soil conservation, moisture conservation, continuity of production and reduction of practices that contribute to soil degradation.
The study will focus primarily on smallholder crop farmers and will not cover large-scale commercial farms. It will also not attempt to investigate every dimension of indigenous knowledge in agriculture; its central concern is specifically soil management and its relationship with sustainable crop production.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms

Indigenous Soil Management Practices: Locally developed methods used by farmers to maintain, improve or conserve soil fertility and productivity. Examples include mulching, crop rotation, intercropping, manure application, fallowing, composting and traditional erosion-control practices.
Soil Management: The deliberate management of soil resources to maintain or improve their physical, chemical and biological properties for agricultural production.
Soil Fertility: The capacity of soil to provide plants with adequate quantities and appropriate balances of nutrients and other conditions required for satisfactory crop growth.
Soil Conservation: The protection and management of soil resources to reduce erosion, nutrient depletion, compaction and other forms of soil degradation.
Sustainable Crop Production: Crop production that meets present food and income needs while maintaining the productive capacity and ecological quality of agricultural resources for future production.
Smallholder Farmer: A farmer who operates a relatively small farm using limited land, labour, capital and other productive resources and who typically relies substantially on family labour.
Crop Rotation: The planned sequential cultivation of different crops on the same farmland over successive production seasons.
Intercropping: The practice of growing two or more crops simultaneously on the same piece of land.
Mulching: The practice of covering the soil surface with organic or other suitable materials to conserve moisture, reduce erosion, suppress weeds and protect the soil.
Organic Manure: Decomposed or partially decomposed animal or plant materials applied to agricultural soil to supply nutrients and improve soil properties.
Composting: The controlled decomposition of organic materials into a relatively stable material that can be applied to soil as an organic amendment.
Green Manuring: The practice of growing and incorporating green plant materials into the soil to improve soil fertility and organic matter.
Bush Fallowing: The temporary abandonment of cultivated land to allow natural vegetation regeneration and recovery of soil fertility.

1.10 Organisation of the Study
The study will be organised into five chapters.
Chapter One presents the introduction to the study, including the background, statement of the problem, aim and objectives, research questions, hypothesis, significance, scope and operational definitions.
Chapter Two will review relevant literature on indigenous knowledge, soil management, indigenous soil management practices, sustainable crop production and related empirical studies. The chapter will also present the theoretical framework guiding the study.
Chapter Three will present the methodology of the study, including the research design, study area, population, sample size, sampling procedure, research instrument, validity and reliability of the instrument, data collection procedures and methods of data analysis.
Chapter Four will present and analyse the data collected from respondents. The results will be organised according to the research questions and hypothesis.
Chapter Five will provide the summary of findings, conclusion and recommendations based on the results of the study. The chapter will also identify areas for further research.
