Project – The Influence of Pentecostal Worship Practices on the Spiritual Development of Christian Youths

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Religion occupies an important place in the social and cultural life of Nigerian society. Christianity, in particular, has remained a major influence on the values, beliefs, identity and everyday activities of millions of Nigerians. Within Nigerian Christianity, Pentecostalism has become one of the most visible and influential expressions of the Christian faith. Its emphasis on the activity of the Holy Spirit, personal conversion, prayer, divine healing, spiritual gifts, lively worship, evangelism and direct personal experience of God has contributed significantly to its rapid growth in Nigeria and other parts of Africa. Anderson (2013) observes that Pentecostalism has become one of the most significant expressions of global Christianity, particularly because of its emphasis on the experience of the Holy Spirit and the missionary task of spreading Christianity.

The development of Pentecostalism in Nigeria has a long and complex history. Nigerian Pentecostalism emerged through several streams and historical influences, including revival movements, Scripture Union activities, student Christian fellowships, indigenous religious movements and later charismatic and neo-Pentecostal ministries. Wariboko (2014) explains that Nigerian Pentecostalism developed through the interaction of religious, cultural, historical, economic and social forces and has produced a distinctive spirituality shaped by Nigerian experiences and understandings of the spiritual world. The movement is therefore not simply an imported form of Christianity but has developed distinctive Nigerian expressions of worship, spirituality and Christian practice.

Contemporary Pentecostal churches in Nigeria are characterised by worship practices that seek to create an immediate and experiential encounter between worshippers and God. These practices commonly include praise and worship, contemporary Christian music, spontaneous prayers, prayer meetings, fasting, vigils, Bible teaching, testimonies, altar calls, speaking in tongues, prophetic declarations, healing services, deliverance activities and other expressions associated with the work of the Holy Spirit. Anderson (2013) identifies worship, healing, spiritual experience and evangelism among the important features through which Pentecostal Christianity has developed and expanded globally.

Worship occupies a central position in Christian spirituality because it provides an avenue through which believers express devotion to God, listen to biblical instruction, participate in prayer, experience fellowship and develop their understanding of Christian identity. In Pentecostal churches, worship is often highly participatory rather than being restricted to clergy or a formal liturgical structure. Members may sing, clap, dance, pray aloud, raise their hands, respond to preaching, testify and participate in other activities that communicate their religious commitment. Asamoah-Gyadu, Anderson and Wariboko (2013) note that Pentecostal Christianity in Africa is characterised by lived experiences of faith, and its significance can be understood through the actual practices and experiences of Pentecostal communities.

Pentecostal worship therefore goes beyond the singing of religious songs. It can encompass a broad range of activities through which believers encounter, interpret and respond to God. Praise and worship, prayer, preaching, testimonies, spiritual gifts, fasting, communion, altar ministry and fellowship may all constitute important dimensions of Pentecostal worship. These practices can contribute to the formation of religious attitudes, values and behaviours, particularly among young people who are still developing their understanding of Christian identity and commitment.

Christian youths constitute an important group within contemporary Pentecostal churches. Youth is a period characterised by significant physical, psychological, social and spiritual changes. Young people are developing their identities, forming relationships, making educational and occupational decisions and negotiating various social and cultural influences. Religious communities can therefore play an important role in helping young people interpret their experiences, develop moral values and establish patterns of behaviour. Pentecostal churches provide young people with opportunities to participate in worship services, youth fellowships, Bible studies, prayer meetings, music ministries, evangelism, leadership activities and other forms of Christian service.

The spiritual development of Christian youths is consequently an important concern for the church. Spiritual development may be understood as the progressive growth of an individual’s relationship with God, understanding of Christian faith, commitment to biblical principles, prayer life, moral conduct, participation in Christian fellowship and willingness to live out Christian beliefs. It involves more than emotional excitement during worship services. Genuine spiritual development should ideally result in increasing Christian maturity, personal devotion, ethical behaviour, service to others and the ability to apply Christian beliefs to everyday life.

Adebayo (2019), in examining teenagers within Redeemed Christian Church of God Pentecostal churches, demonstrates that young people themselves make distinctions between religion and spirituality and attach particular meanings to their spiritual experiences. This is important because youth participation in church programmes cannot automatically be equated with spiritual maturity. The nature of young people’s participation, what they understand from worship and how religious practices affect their daily lives are important questions for empirical investigation.

Pentecostal worship practices may influence spiritual development in several ways. First, prayer is a central component of Pentecostal spirituality. Prayer provides believers with an opportunity to communicate with God, express dependence on God, seek guidance, confess sins, intercede for others and ask for divine assistance. Regular participation in corporate and personal prayer may encourage youths to develop personal devotional habits. However, the spiritual value of prayer depends not only on frequency but also on the understanding and motivation of those who participate in it.

Second, praise and worship music can influence the emotional and spiritual experiences of young people. Contemporary Pentecostal worship frequently incorporates musical styles that are familiar to younger generations. Songs may communicate biblical themes, encourage emotional expression and facilitate congregational participation. Tshabalala and Patel (2010), in a study of a Pentecostal youth ministry group, found that praise and worship activities, prayer and music were perceived by participating youths as contributing to spiritual well-being. The participants associated youth-group involvement with guidance and growth, while music was experienced as uplifting and transformative.

Third, preaching and biblical teaching constitute important dimensions of Pentecostal worship. Sermons provide theological instruction and interpret Scripture in relation to contemporary life. Effective preaching can help young people understand Christian doctrines, develop moral values and apply biblical principles to practical situations. Pentecostal preaching may also emphasise salvation, holiness, faith, prayer, the Holy Spirit, spiritual warfare, divine intervention and Christian responsibility. When young people engage critically and consistently with biblical teaching, preaching can contribute to the development of Christian knowledge and spiritual maturity.

Fourth, testimonies are commonly incorporated into Pentecostal worship. A testimony is generally a personal account of God’s perceived intervention or activity in a believer’s life. Testimonies may strengthen faith, encourage hope and communicate the belief that God remains active in the lives of believers. For youths, hearing the experiences of other Christians can provide models of faith and perseverance. However, testimonies may also create unrealistic expectations if spiritual maturity becomes excessively associated with spectacular miracles or material blessings rather than character, obedience and service.

Fifth, fasting and prayer vigils are significant practices in many Pentecostal churches. Fasting is traditionally understood as voluntary abstinence from food or other legitimate activities for spiritual purposes, while prayer vigils involve extended periods of prayer, often during the night. Such practices may encourage discipline, dependence on God and deeper devotional commitment. At the same time, the effectiveness of these practices for spiritual development depends on how they are taught and practised. They should ideally be accompanied by biblical understanding, ethical conduct and genuine devotion rather than being treated merely as techniques for obtaining material or personal benefits.

Sixth, spiritual gifts and charismatic practices are important elements of Pentecostal worship. These may include speaking in tongues, prophecy, healing, words of knowledge and other practices understood as manifestations of the Holy Spirit. Wariboko (2014) shows that Nigerian Pentecostal spirituality is deeply concerned with believers’ experience of a spirit-filled world, while Pentecostal identity is shaped by distinctive understandings of spiritual realities and practices.

Seventh, fellowship and participation in youth ministries can provide social environments in which Christian youths develop friendships, receive spiritual guidance and participate in collective worship. Youth groups can provide opportunities for Bible study, prayer, music, evangelism, leadership training and Christian service. These activities may strengthen a young person’s sense of belonging and Christian identity. Tshabalala and Patel (2010) found that youth-group involvement was associated by participants with guidance, growth and a sense of connection.

The influence of Pentecostal worship practices on spiritual development can also be considered in relation to Christian identity. Young people are exposed to numerous influences from family, school, peer groups, social media, entertainment and popular culture. Pentecostal worship can provide a framework through which young Christians interpret these influences in relation to their faith. Through regular participation in worship and Christian fellowship, youths may develop a stronger understanding of what it means to be a Christian and how Christian beliefs should shape everyday decisions.

Contemporary Pentecostal churches increasingly employ modern communication technologies and social media to engage young people. Afolabi and Oderinde (2024) found that Pentecostal churches in Nigeria use mass media and online platforms to target youths, reflecting the increasing importance of digital spaces in contemporary Pentecostal religious engagement. Their study also points to the growth of religious programmes and spiritual content online. This development means that the spiritual formation of Pentecostal youths is no longer confined to the physical church building. Young people may now encounter sermons, worship music, prayer programmes, testimonies and other religious content through digital platforms.

While these developments can extend the reach of Christian ministry, they also raise questions about the depth of spiritual engagement. A young person may watch numerous sermons online, listen to worship music regularly and attend large Pentecostal programmes without necessarily developing consistent personal Bible study, prayer, moral discipline and Christian service. Spiritual development therefore needs to be examined beyond participation or exposure to religious activities.

Another important issue is the balance between emotional experience and spiritual maturity. Pentecostal worship can be highly emotional and participatory. Singing, dancing, clapping, shouting, prayer, spiritual manifestations and testimonies may produce powerful experiences for worshippers. Such experiences can be meaningful expressions of faith. However, emotional intensity alone does not necessarily demonstrate spiritual maturity. Christian spiritual development should ideally include transformation of character, love for others, self-discipline, forgiveness, humility, obedience to Scripture and responsible Christian living.

This distinction is particularly important among youths because young people may be attracted to the excitement and social dimensions of Pentecostal worship while having varying levels of theological understanding and personal commitment. Adebayo’s (2019) study of teenagers in RCCG Pentecostal settings demonstrates the value of listening directly to young people regarding how they understand religion and spirituality rather than assuming that church participation has the same meaning for every young person.

The Nigerian Pentecostal context also requires attention to the relationship between worship practices and broader cultural expectations. Pentecostal churches operate within a society where religious beliefs intersect with traditional cultural practices, economic pressures, family expectations and contemporary social realities. Wariboko (2014) argues that Nigerian Pentecostal spirituality is shaped by the particular historical and cultural environment in which Nigerian believers live. Consequently, Pentecostal worship practices should be understood within the lived realities of Nigerian Christians rather than examined only as abstract theological activities.

There are also concerns regarding the possibility that some Pentecostal practices may unintentionally encourage a highly individualistic understanding of Christianity. Oloyede (2015), in examining worship and the Lord’s Supper in Assemblies of God and selected Pentecostal churches in Nigeria, argues that some Pentecostal worship practices may encourage individuals to focus heavily on appropriating God’s promises personally, potentially weakening the communal dimension of Christian life. This observation is relevant to spiritual development because Christian maturity involves not only an individual’s relationship with God but also relationships with other believers and responsible participation in the Christian community.

The issue of prosperity-oriented worship also deserves consideration. Nigerian Pentecostalism has undergone significant changes in its emphasis over time. Wariboko (2014) notes that the Nigerian Pentecostal movement experienced shifts from earlier emphases on holiness and sanctification toward increased emphasis on prosperity, healing and deliverance in later periods. This does not imply that all Pentecostal churches or worship services are primarily prosperity-oriented. Rather, it indicates that the content and emphasis of Pentecostal worship have evolved, creating a need to examine how particular practices influence the spiritual formation of younger believers.

For Christian youths, the message communicated through worship may therefore influence their understanding of what constitutes a successful Christian life. If worship consistently emphasises holiness, Scripture, prayer, service, love and discipleship, young people may develop a holistic understanding of Christian spirituality. If, however, worship is dominated by material prosperity, miraculous expectations or personality-centred religious experiences, young people may develop a narrower conception of Christianity.

The church’s responsibility for youth spiritual development is therefore considerable. The New Testament presents Christian growth as involving teaching, fellowship, prayer, worship, service and moral transformation. In Acts 2:42, the early Christian community is described as continuing in the apostles’ teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayers. Similarly, Ephesians 4:11–16 presents Christian ministry as contributing to the maturity of believers. These biblical principles suggest that spiritual development is multidimensional and cannot be reduced to attendance at worship services or participation in isolated religious experiences.

The need to investigate Pentecostal worship practices becomes even more important in an urban environment such as Aba South Local Government Area of Abia State. Aba is an important commercial centre in southeastern Nigeria and has a diverse population with numerous churches and religious organisations. The concentration of Pentecostal churches provides young people with multiple opportunities to participate in different styles of worship. Different churches may place varying levels of emphasis on contemporary music, prayer, fasting, preaching, prophecy, deliverance, testimonies, youth programmes and evangelism.

The diversity of Pentecostal worship practices within Aba South creates an important context for investigating their influence on youth spirituality. Although Pentecostal churches may share broad theological commitments, their practical expressions of worship can differ considerably. Some churches may emphasise extended prayer and fasting, others contemporary praise and worship, while others may place greater emphasis on preaching, prophecy, healing or deliverance. These differences may shape the ways in which youths experience and understand Christian spirituality.

The present study therefore focuses specifically on The Influence of Pentecostal Worship Practices on the Spiritual Development of Christian Youths: A Study of Selected Pentecostal Churches in Aba South Local Government Area, Abia State. The study will examine major Pentecostal worship practices and determine the extent to which they influence the spiritual development of Christian youths.

The study is important because Pentecostal churches constitute significant spaces of religious socialisation for Nigerian youths. Their influence should therefore be assessed not simply by church attendance, numerical growth or programme popularity but also by the extent to which worship practices contribute to genuine Christian spiritual development. The findings of the study may provide useful information for pastors, youth leaders, parents, theological educators and Christian youths concerning the practices that strengthen meaningful spiritual formation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The spiritual development of Christian youths is an important responsibility of the Christian church. The church is expected not only to attract young people to worship services but also to help them develop mature relationships with God, understand Scripture, cultivate Christian character, practise prayer, demonstrate love and service, and live out their faith in their daily environment. In Pentecostal churches, worship is one of the principal contexts through which such spiritual formation occurs.

However, a significant problem arises when regular participation in Pentecostal worship is assumed to be equivalent to spiritual development. A young person may attend church regularly, sing enthusiastically during worship, participate in prayer programmes, attend vigils and respond to altar calls without necessarily developing a consistent personal devotional life, biblical understanding or Christian character. The existence of vibrant worship does not automatically establish that spiritual maturity is taking place.

This issue is important because Pentecostal worship is frequently characterised by strong emotional and experiential dimensions. Music, dancing, prayer, testimonies, prophetic declarations, speaking in tongues, healing, deliverance and other charismatic activities can generate intense spiritual experiences. Such experiences may be meaningful and beneficial, but the extent to which they produce sustained spiritual transformation among youths requires empirical investigation.

The problem is further complicated by the fact that Pentecostal youths live within a rapidly changing social environment. Young Christians are exposed not only to church teachings but also to social media, entertainment, peer pressure, secular values, economic difficulties and changing cultural expectations. Afolabi and Oderinde (2024) show that Pentecostal churches increasingly use mass media and digital platforms to engage Nigerian youths. This creates greater opportunities for spiritual engagement but also exposes young people to competing religious messages and forms of religious consumerism.

Another concern is the possible gap between religious participation and authentic spirituality. Adebayo (2019), in studying teenagers in RCCG Pentecostal churches, demonstrated that young people have their own ways of distinguishing between religion and spirituality. This suggests that researchers should not assume that participation in religious programmes automatically reflects the spiritual condition of youths. What young people actually understand, internalise and practise as a result of worship is an important question that requires investigation.

The content and emphasis of Pentecostal worship also create concerns. Nigerian Pentecostalism has experienced changes in emphasis, with later forms of Pentecostalism increasingly incorporating prosperity, healing and deliverance alongside earlier emphases on holiness and sanctification (Wariboko, 2014). While these practices may respond to the needs and expectations of worshippers, they also raise questions about the type of Christian spirituality being communicated to young people.

If young people are repeatedly exposed to worship that presents Christianity primarily as a means of obtaining material success, physical healing or supernatural solutions to personal problems, there is a possibility that they may develop a utilitarian understanding of faith. Christianity may become valued primarily for what God can provide rather than for relationship with God, obedience to Scripture, Christian character, service and commitment to others. This does not mean that prayer for material or physical needs is inherently inappropriate; rather, the concern is whether such emphases become so dominant that other dimensions of Christian spirituality receive insufficient attention.

There is also concern about personality-centred worship. Contemporary Pentecostal churches may sometimes place considerable attention on prominent pastors, worship leaders, prophets or other religious personalities. Young people may consequently become strongly attached to particular ministers or worship styles. Such attachment may be beneficial when it provides positive spiritual mentorship, but it may become problematic if young Christians develop greater loyalty to personalities than to biblical teaching and the wider Christian community.

The communal dimension of Pentecostal spirituality is another area of concern. Oloyede (2015) observed that some Pentecostal worship practices in Nigeria may encourage individual appropriation of God’s promises at the expense of the communal dimension of Christian life. If young Christians primarily understand worship as a means of meeting personal needs, there may be insufficient emphasis on fellowship, mutual responsibility, compassion, service and concern for other members of the Christian community.

The use of contemporary music also presents a complex issue. Music can be a powerful means of communicating Christian beliefs and facilitating emotional and spiritual engagement. Tshabalala and Patel (2010) found that Pentecostal youths associated music and praise-and-worship activities with uplifting and transformative experiences and connected youth-group participation with spiritual guidance and growth. Nevertheless, there remains a question concerning whether the emotional experience produced by music translates into sustained spiritual practices outside the worship service.

Similarly, prolonged prayer programmes and vigils may encourage discipline and devotion, but frequency of participation does not necessarily establish spiritual maturity. Young people may participate because of peer influence, family expectations, social relationships or the excitement associated with the programme. It is therefore necessary to determine whether such practices are associated with deeper prayer lives, Bible study, Christian conduct, moral discipline and commitment to Christian service.

The problem is also evident in relation to spiritual gifts and charismatic manifestations. Pentecostal churches place significant emphasis on the work of the Holy Spirit and spiritual gifts. Wariboko (2014) identifies the experience of the spirit-filled world as central to Nigerian Pentecostal spirituality. However, spiritual manifestations by themselves should not necessarily be equated with spiritual maturity. Christian spiritual development involves character and ethical transformation as well as religious experience.

Another problem concerns the influence of peer groups on youth participation. Young people may participate in Pentecostal worship because their friends participate, because particular worship services are socially attractive or because church programmes provide opportunities for social interaction. While fellowship and friendship are valuable dimensions of youth ministry, participation motivated primarily by social factors may not necessarily result in deep spiritual development. It is therefore important to determine the extent to which Pentecostal worship practices themselves contribute to spiritual growth.

In addition, there is insufficient empirical evidence specifically examining the influence of Pentecostal worship practices on the spiritual development of youths in Aba South Local Government Area, Abia State. Existing scholarship has provided substantial information about Nigerian Pentecostalism, its historical development, spirituality, worship and social influence (Anderson, 2013; Wariboko, 2014), while studies such as Adebayo (2019) and Tshabalala and Patel (2010) provide insight into youth spirituality and Pentecostal worship. However, evidence from these studies cannot automatically be generalised to Pentecostal youths in Aba South because local church practices, youth programmes, socioeconomic circumstances and patterns of worship may differ.

The contextual gap is particularly significant because Aba is a major urban centre with a strong presence of Pentecostal Christianity. Young people in the area encounter multiple Pentecostal churches with different approaches to worship, preaching, prayer, music, prophecy, deliverance and youth ministry. The diversity of these practices provides a useful context for examining whether Pentecostal worship contributes to genuine spiritual development among young Christians.

The problem, therefore, is not the existence of Pentecostal worship practices themselves. Rather, the problem is the uncertainty concerning the extent and nature of their influence on the spiritual development of Christian youths. It is not sufficiently established whether participation in praise and worship, prayer, preaching, Bible teaching, testimonies, fasting, vigils, spiritual gifts, youth fellowship and related practices consistently produces deeper prayer lives, biblical commitment, Christian character, moral discipline, fellowship and service among youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Aba South.

This study therefore seeks to investigate the influence of Pentecostal worship practices on the spiritual development of Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Aba South Local Government Area, Abia State. By examining the relationship between specific worship practices and indicators of spiritual development, the study intends to provide empirical evidence that can help Pentecostal churches evaluate the effectiveness of their worship practices in nurturing spiritually mature young Christians.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of Pentecostal worship practices on the spiritual development of Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Aba South Local Government Area, Abia State.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

  1. identify the major Pentecostal worship practices commonly engaged in by Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Aba South Local Government Area;
  2. examine the extent to which praise and worship activities influence the spiritual development of Christian youths;
  3. determine the influence of prayer activities on the spiritual development of Christian youths;
  4. examine the influence of preaching and Bible teaching during Pentecostal worship on the spiritual development of Christian youths

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What are the major Pentecostal worship practices commonly engaged in by Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Aba South Local Government Area?
  2. To what extent do praise and worship activities influence the spiritual development of Christian youths?
  3. What influence do prayer activities have on the spiritual development of Christian youths?
  4. To what extent do preaching and Bible teaching during Pentecostal worship influence the spiritual development of Christian youths?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between Pentecostal worship practices and the spiritual development of Christian youths in selected Pentecostal churches in Aba South Local Government Area, Abia State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study will be significant to Christian youths, Pentecostal pastors, youth leaders, church administrators, parents, theological educators, Christian organisations, educational institutions, researchers and future scholars.

Christian Youths

The study will help Christian youths understand the potential role of worship in their spiritual development. It may encourage them to approach worship not merely as a social or emotional activity but as an opportunity for prayer, biblical learning, personal reflection, fellowship and spiritual growth. The findings may also help youths evaluate their participation in church activities and develop personal spiritual disciplines.

Pentecostal Pastors and Ministers

The findings will provide pastors and ministers with empirical information concerning the influence of their worship practices on young people’s spiritual lives. This may assist church leaders in designing worship programmes that promote biblical understanding, prayer, Christian character, discipleship and responsible Christian living rather than focusing exclusively on emotional experiences.

Youth Leaders

Youth leaders may benefit from the findings when planning youth programmes, Bible studies, prayer meetings, worship services, retreats and evangelistic activities. The study may help them identify practices that encourage sustained spiritual growth and meaningful participation among young people.

Church Administrators

Church administrators may use the findings in evaluating the effectiveness of existing worship structures and youth ministry programmes. The study may provide evidence for improving the organisation and content of worship services directed toward younger members.

Parents and Guardians

Parents may gain a better understanding of how church worship experiences may influence the spiritual development of their children. The findings may encourage stronger collaboration between parents and churches in supporting young people’s Christian development.

Theological Educators

The findings may be useful to seminaries, theological colleges and Christian training institutions in strengthening instruction concerning Pentecostal worship, youth ministry, discipleship and spiritual formation. It may encourage future ministers to consider not only the attractiveness of worship but also its formative effect on Christian character.
