Project – The Teachings of Jesus on Servant Leadership and Their Relevance to Contemporary Christian Leaders

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Leadership is an important feature of human society because the direction, values and conduct of leaders often influence the people and institutions under their care. Within Christianity, however, leadership is not understood merely as the possession of authority, position or influence. The New Testament presents leadership primarily in terms of service, humility, sacrifice, responsibility and care for others. Jesus Christ provided a distinctive understanding of leadership when He challenged His disciples to reject the dominant model of authority in which rulers “lord it over” their subjects. Instead, He taught that greatness in God’s kingdom is demonstrated through service to others (Matthew 20:25–28; Mark 10:42–45). This teaching establishes an important theological foundation for Christian leadership because it shifts attention from the privileges associated with leadership to the responsibilities of serving God’s people. Contemporary scholarship on Mark 10:42–45 likewise identifies the passage as a central biblical text for understanding Christian servant leadership and its contrast with power-oriented leadership models (Smit, 2018).

The teachings of Jesus on leadership were closely connected to His understanding of greatness, authority and discipleship. In Matthew 20:20–28, the request of the mother of James and John for positions of prominence created an opportunity for Jesus to redefine greatness among His followers. Rather than presenting leadership as an opportunity for status or personal advancement, Jesus instructed His disciples that whoever desired to become great should become a servant, and whoever desired to be first should become a servant of all. The significance of this teaching is that Christian leadership is measured not simply by the number of followers, institutional position or public recognition possessed by a leader, but by the willingness to serve and promote the welfare of others. A recent Nigerian study of Matthew 20:20–28 identifies this pattern as placing others above self, responsibility above position, contribution above recognition and care above ownership (Unachukwu, 2024). Thus, Jesus’ teaching provides a theological framework through which contemporary Christian leadership can be understood and evaluated.

Another important dimension of Jesus’ teaching on servant leadership is the relationship between authority and humility. In John 13:1–17, Jesus demonstrated servant leadership by washing the feet of His disciples, an act that carried considerable symbolic significance because foot-washing was associated with humble service. Jesus did not merely instruct His disciples to serve; He personally demonstrated the behaviour He expected from them. After washing their feet, He instructed them to follow His example. This action suggests that Christian leadership involves leading by example rather than demanding service from others while remaining unwilling to serve. Ngele, Onwuanaku and Uwaegbute (2014), in their exegetical study of John 13:1–17, identify Jesus’ action as an exemplary model of servant leadership with implications for the church and Nigerian society. The model is therefore significant because it connects Christian leadership with humility, practical service and the willingness of leaders to identify with the needs of those they lead.

Jesus’ teaching also presents leadership as an expression of love, care and sacrificial responsibility. In John 10:11–18, Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep, cares for them and is willing to lay down His life for them. The shepherd metaphor provides another important picture of Christian leadership because it emphasizes protection, guidance, knowledge of followers and self-giving responsibility. A Christian leader is therefore expected to see leadership as stewardship over people rather than ownership of people. Boaheng (2023), examining John 10:1–18 and its implications for contemporary African Christian leadership, argues that the shepherd model requires Christian leaders to serve, guide, protect and provide for those entrusted to their care. This understanding is particularly relevant to contemporary Christian communities where leaders exercise significant spiritual, social and organizational influence.

The modern concept of servant leadership has also received considerable attention outside explicitly theological scholarship. Greenleaf (1977) popularised the modern servant-leadership framework by arguing that genuine leadership begins with the desire to serve and that leadership should be evaluated partly by whether those served grow, become more capable and experience improved well-being. Although Greenleaf’s formulation emerged within a broader leadership context rather than solely from Christian theology, its emphasis on service provides an important conceptual connection with the teachings of Jesus. Christian servant leadership, however, goes beyond a general management philosophy because its foundation is rooted in the person, teachings and sacrificial example of Christ. The Christian leader therefore serves not merely because service produces organisational effectiveness but because service is presented in Scripture as a fundamental expression of discipleship and obedience to Christ (Greenleaf, 1977; Mark 10:43–45).

The relevance of Jesus’ teachings becomes particularly important when considered within the contemporary Nigerian church environment. Christian leaders in Nigeria operate in a context characterised by large congregations, extensive ministry structures, strong public visibility, media influence and considerable expectations concerning spiritual and material outcomes. These developments have increased the importance of examining the ethical and theological foundations of Christian leadership. Igbari (2022), in a study of Jesus’ leadership model and the integrity of church leaders in Nigeria, argues that the leadership pattern demonstrated by Jesus provides an important template for church leaders, particularly in relation to integrity and ethical conduct. Similarly, Adeyeye (2017) examines Jesus’ leadership qualities as a model for Nigerian church leaders and highlights the continuing tension between servant leadership and leadership patterns based on authority, position and succession. These studies demonstrate the importance of returning to the teachings and example of Jesus when considering contemporary Christian leadership in Nigeria.

The issue is also relevant because contemporary Christian leaders are expected to balance spiritual responsibilities with administrative, financial, organisational and relational responsibilities. As churches expand, leaders may oversee staff, ministries, finances, programmes, buildings and large numbers of congregants. Such responsibilities require authority, but the teachings of Jesus indicate that authority within Christian ministry should be exercised as service rather than domination. Okunoye and Jemiriye (2025) specifically examine Mark 10:41–45 in relation to contemporary Christian ministers and distinguish the biblical leadership model presented by Jesus from secular patterns in which authority can become associated with dominance and status. Consequently, studying Jesus’ teachings on servant leadership is important for understanding how Christian leaders can exercise legitimate authority while maintaining humility, accountability, compassion and service.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The teachings of Jesus present a clear model of leadership based on service, humility, sacrifice and concern for others, yet the practical expression of these principles among contemporary Christian leaders remains an important subject for theological investigation. Jesus explicitly contrasted kingdom leadership with the leadership practices of rulers who exercise authority over others and instructed His disciples that such patterns should not characterize their leadership (Matthew 20:25–28; Mark 10:42–45). The continuing need to examine this teaching arises because Christian leadership involves the exercise of authority over congregations, ministries and institutions, creating the possibility that leadership positions may be understood primarily in terms of status, recognition or control rather than service. Igbari (2022) argues that questions surrounding the integrity and ethical conduct of church leaders in Nigeria make Jesus’ leadership model particularly relevant to contemporary church leadership.

A second problem concerns the apparent gap that can exist between the biblical ideal of servant leadership and practical leadership behaviour. Jesus did not only teach servanthood verbally; He demonstrated it through actions such as washing His disciples’ feet and caring for His followers. John 13:1–17 therefore presents leadership as something that must be demonstrated through conduct. Ngele et al. (2014) observed that Jesus’ servant leadership model has implications for the church and Nigerian society, particularly because leadership in both ecclesiastical and societal contexts can become associated with arbitrary expressions of power and authority. This creates a need to examine whether contemporary Christian leaders sufficiently understand leadership as humble service and whether the teachings of Jesus are reflected in their relationships with members, workers and other ministry stakeholders.

A third problem relates to the understanding and exercise of authority within contemporary Christian ministries. Christian leaders necessarily possess some degree of authority, but Jesus’ teaching suggests that authority should be exercised differently from systems where leaders “lord it over” those under them. Matthew 20:25–28 presents a reversal of conventional status-based leadership by identifying greatness with service. Unachukwu’s study of Matthew 20:20–28 similarly identifies responsibility, contribution, care and service as central elements of Jesus’ leadership model in the Nigerian Pentecostal context. The problem, therefore, is not the existence of leadership authority itself but the need to understand how such authority should be exercised in a manner consistent with the teachings and example of Christ.

Finally, there is a need for a focused theological examination of the relevance of Jesus’ teachings on servant leadership to contemporary Christian leaders. Existing studies have examined Jesus’ leadership model through particular biblical passages, including Matthew 20:20–28, Mark 10:42–45, John 10:1–18 and John 13:1–17. However, there remains value in bringing these teachings together to examine the broader principles of humility, service, sacrificial leadership, care, integrity and responsible use of authority and their implications for contemporary Christian leaders. Recent scholarship continues to identify servant leadership as an important response to challenges confronting contemporary church leadership, while studies of African and Nigerian Christian leadership demonstrate the continuing relevance of Jesus’ leadership model (Boaheng, 2023; Okunoye & Jemiriye, 2025). This study therefore seeks to examine systematically the teachings of Jesus on servant leadership and their relevance to contemporary Christian leaders.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the teachings of Jesus on servant leadership and their relevance to contemporary Christian leaders.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

  1. Examine the biblical teachings of Jesus on servant leadership.
  2. Identify the major principles of servant leadership demonstrated in the teachings and actions of Jesus.
  3. Examine the understanding of servant leadership among contemporary Christian leaders.
  4. Assess the relevance of Jesus’ teachings on servant leadership to contemporary Christian leadership practices.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions will guide the study:

  1. What are the biblical teachings of Jesus on servant leadership?
  2. What are the major principles of servant leadership demonstrated in the teachings and actions of Jesus?
  3. What is the level of understanding of servant leadership among contemporary Christian leaders?
  4. How relevant are Jesus’ teachings on servant leadership to contemporary Christian leadership practices?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between Christian leaders’ understanding of Jesus’ teachings on servant leadership and their practice of servant leadership.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be significant to Christian leaders because it will provide a biblical framework for understanding leadership as service rather than merely as authority or status. By examining Jesus’ teachings and actions, the study will draw attention to principles such as humility, sacrifice, compassion, accountability and concern for the welfare of followers.

The study will also be useful to church members because it may help them understand the biblical expectations associated with Christian leadership. A clearer understanding of servant leadership can provide church members with a theological basis for appreciating responsible leadership and constructive relationships between leaders and followers.

The study will be significant to theological institutions, Bible colleges and seminaries because it will contribute to discussions on Christian leadership, discipleship, pastoral ministry and practical theology. The study can serve as additional academic material for students and researchers examining biblical leadership and contemporary ministry.

The study will also benefit Pentecostal and other Christian denominations by highlighting the practical implications of Jesus’ teachings for contemporary ministry structures. Nigerian scholarship has continued to identify Jesus’ leadership model as relevant to questions concerning church leadership, integrity and governance (Igbari, 2022; Adeyeye, 2017).

Finally, the study will contribute to future researchers by providing a foundation for further studies on servant leadership, pastoral leadership, church governance, Christian ethics and the relationship between biblical leadership principles and contemporary ministry practices.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the teachings of Jesus on servant leadership and their relevance to contemporary Christian leaders. The biblical aspect of the study will concentrate particularly on selected New Testament passages that directly address Jesus’ understanding and practice of leadership, including Matthew 20:20–28, Mark 10:35–45, John 10:1–18 and John 13:1–17.

The study will examine major principles including service, humility, sacrifice, compassion, care for followers, responsible exercise of authority, leadership by example, and concern for the welfare of others. The contemporary dimension will focus on Christian leaders and their understanding and application of these principles in church leadership.

For an empirical component, the study may be delimited to selected Christian churches in Enugu State, Nigeria, depending on the specific churches selected for the fieldwork. The study will not attempt to examine every Christian denomination or every dimension of leadership. Rather, attention will be given specifically to the relevance and practical application of Jesus’ servant-leadership teachings.
