INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Church leadership plays a crucial role in shaping the spiritual, social, and moral experiences of worshippers. In Nigeria, religious institutions, particularly Christian churches, occupy a central position in the lives of many citizens, offering spiritual guidance, moral instruction, and social support (Oladele, 2019). A key aspect of church leadership is the moral and ethical conduct of pastors, which often influences the perception, loyalty, and retention of worshippers within a congregation.

Traditionally, Christian doctrines have emphasized monogamy as the preferred marital arrangement for church leaders (Ekwunife, 2020). However, in some cases, lead pastors in Nigeria are known to take more than one wife, a practice influenced by cultural, denominational, or personal considerations. While polygamy is recognized in many Nigerian cultures and certain religious contexts, its acceptance within Christian leadership remains contentious (Adeyemo, 2021). Congregants often evaluate the moral and spiritual credibility of pastors based on their personal lives, and the practice of having multiple wives may affect perceptions of integrity, spiritual authority, and moral guidance (Nwosu, 2018).

Retention of worshippers is critical for the sustainability of churches, both in terms of spiritual influence and organizational growth (Ogunleye, 2022). Worshippers may choose to remain, leave, or reduce participation based on various factors, including doctrinal alignment, leadership style, and perceived moral conduct of pastors. Therefore, understanding how the marital practices of lead pastors, particularly having more than one wife, influence worshipper retention is essential for church management, denominational policy, and the broader discourse on religious leadership ethics in Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The retention of worshippers remains a significant challenge for many churches in Nigeria. Despite substantial growth in the number of congregations and members, some churches experience frequent dropouts, reduced participation in activities, and declining spiritual engagement. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the personal conduct of lead pastors, especially regarding marital arrangements, may influence these trends.

Lead pastors who have more than one wife may face divided congregational opinions. While some worshippers may view this as culturally permissible, others may perceive it as a deviation from Christian moral expectations, potentially undermining trust and confidence in the pastor’s spiritual authority (Eze, 2019). This tension can create a dilemma for congregants: whether to continue attending the church, shift allegiance to another church, or disengage altogether.

Despite the practical implications, there is limited empirical research in Nigeria examining the impact of lead pastors having multiple wives on the retention of worshippers. Most studies focus on general leadership qualities, church growth strategies, or pastoral effectiveness (Ajibade & Olawale, 2020; Oladele, 2019), leaving a critical gap in understanding the specific influence of pastoral marital practices on congregational loyalty. Addressing this gap is essential for informing church policies, leadership guidelines, and strategies to maintain and strengthen worshipper retention.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The study seeks to:

1. Examine the impact of lead pastors having more than one wife on worshippers’ retention in Nigerian churches.

2. Determine the perceptions of congregants regarding the moral and spiritual authority of pastors with more than one wife.

3. Identify strategies that churches can adopt to improve worshipper retention regardless of pastoral marital practices.

1.4 Research Questions

The study will be guided by the following questions:

1. How does having more than one wife affect a pastor’s perceived spiritual and moral authority among worshippers?

2. What is the relationship between a lead pastor’s marital arrangement and worshipper retention in Nigerian churches?

3. What strategies can churches implement to mitigate negative impacts of pastoral marital practices on congregational retention?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Lead pastors having more than one wife do not significantly affect worshippers’ retention in Nigerian churches.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons:

1. Theoretical Contribution: It contributes to literature on church leadership, moral ethics, and congregational behavior in Nigeria.

2. Practical Relevance: Church administrators and denominational leaders can use the findings to develop strategies for worshipper retention and policy guidelines for pastoral conduct.

3. Social Impact: Understanding the relationship between pastoral marital practices and worshipper retention can help congregants make informed decisions regarding their spiritual engagement and loyalty.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on selected churches in urban and semi-urban areas of Nigeria, particularly examining lead pastors who have more than one wife. It considers the perceptions and experiences of congregants regarding worshipper retention, church loyalty, and engagement. The study period covers the last five years to capture recent trends in church leadership practices and congregational responses.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

The study may face the following limitations:

1. Sensitivity of the Topic: Discussions about pastors’ personal lives may lead to reluctance in sharing accurate information.

2. Access to Respondents: Some congregants and church leaders may be difficult to reach due to geographic or institutional restrictions.

3. Generalizability: Findings may not be applicable to all churches in Nigeria, especially rural congregations with unique cultural and religious practices.
